I remember recording this episode on VHS specifically because ATDI were on and watching the tape so many times, winding back and forth between this and OAS it ended up grinding the tape to complete shit....

Yeah and that was the look that was hip til the early 00's garage Rock revival (White Stripes, The Hives, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Von Bondies, The Dirtbombs, The Strokes etc etc) which later gave inspiration to the NME bands you mentioned like the Libertines and the vogue for vintage clothing. The current use of the name hipster originates from New York's East Village in the early 00s although the name was widely used in the 40's as an alternative to Hepcat.

In the late 60s/early 70s some of them would of been 'Hippies' yes which was term used to describe the new kind of hip beatnik emerging at the time. By the 70s wearing flares was as widespread as wearing skinny jeans/tighter fitting jeans today- just the cut that's in fashion at the time. Everyone wore them- punks hated it and started wearing skin tight jeans and short hair as a reaction against the 60s hangover still invading their lives.

The tight t shirts/slightly flared jeans/converse it's very year 2000 hipster. The following year, the Strokes had a similar sort of image. You've got to remember that the fashion trend at the time was leaning towards skate punk. Also they are Emo yes, proper emo before it's dissolution into only meaning that you look like your in AFI.
