Absolute performance artists. I wonder if they ever dreamt of where they would go from here. I remember listening to this and In Casino Out on the school bus in the morning. Such a huge influence throughout their entire careers.

Yeah and that was the look that was hip til the early 00's garage Rock revival (White Stripes, The Hives, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Von Bondies, The Dirtbombs, The Strokes etc etc) which later gave inspiration to the NME bands you mentioned like the Libertines and the vogue for vintage clothing. The current use of the name hipster originates from New York's East Village in the early 00s although the name was widely used in the 40's as an alternative to Hepcat.

I see. Emo in the early 00s and prior to that is a whole different animal to what it is now. It would then be the same for hipsterdom, the only thing in common between a 00s hipster and a 40s hipster would be the name. Flares were hip in the 70s, would that make the people who wore them 70s hipsters?

In the late 60s/early 70s some of them would of been 'Hippies' yes which was term used to describe the new kind of hip beatnik emerging at the time. By the 70s wearing flares was as widespread as wearing skinny jeans/tighter fitting jeans today- just the cut that's in fashion at the time. Everyone wore them- punks hated it and started wearing skin tight jeans and short hair as a reaction against the 60s hangover still invading their lives.

Well then its skate punk fashion combined with post hardcore/emo when it was good no? My conception of hipsters is the skinny jean wearing mock cockney accented jangly guitar playing bands like The Libertines, Jack Penate, artists that are favourites of the NME.

The tight t shirts/slightly flared jeans/converse it's very year 2000 hipster. The following year, the Strokes had a similar sort of image. You've got to remember that the fashion trend at the time was leaning towards skate punk. Also they are Emo yes, proper emo before it's dissolution into only meaning that you look like your in AFI.
