Those out of tune guitars would have driven me mad if it was my own band but it just goes to show that it’s a lesson to us all not to get too delicate with the recording process. Feel will always outwin perfection. It’s pretty brave of them to have done it this way. 👍🏼

nobody talks about Jim. He is so underappreciated. He plays such a big part for ATDI. In a way, he helps to ground them. Without Jim it's a little to all over the place. Mars Volta is great. Like Sparta even more. But ATDI is really the best assembly of cast of the 3.

Hi there, I've been a HUGE fan of your channel, LITERALLY since you started. But I feel compelled to give you a small bit of constructive criticism about your latest videos: ever since you started playing guitar, you seem to often try to work in some time talking about the level of difficulty the song or album your talking about is to play, which, all due respect; I feel detracts from your content. An example: Amputechture. TMV is my favorite rock band of ALL time & I have a special sentimental attachment of sorts to that record. So needless to say I had the biggest music nerd boner going into your video about it, I enjoyed sections of it, but I really felt the 2 or so minutes you spend talking about & attempting to play Vicarious Atonement derailed any momentum the essay had has prevented me from ever wanting to re-watch the vid... & I believe the reason is: for both musicians AND non-musicians alike, You need a Rick Beato level of knowledge & insight into theory &/or years, if not decades of experience in said field to point out something neither type of fan has noticed or thought about before. Something truly new I love what you do, you inspire me, PLEASE keep making content and music!
Do Fugazi next!

Thank you for digging into the post-hardcore, post-emo scene. There’s so much more creativity like this to explore in the 90s scene.
This album ruled and still rules. I would play this non-stop when it was released and still go back to it every now and then. It's still astonishing.
I think I know why I love these videos. They remind me of when I was a teenager sitting in my bedroom with my buddies listening to records and talking about music, except that now one of us actually knows what he's talking about.
Hi Brother Rick, this song is a great example of non - computerized Rock and Roll! When you listen to it, it sounds so real, no crystal clear perfection, no Pro Tools or Pitch-Perfect correction, but it sounds great, because it's the sound of a band making music together, and interacting with each other. It's the true essence of what Rock is supposed to be about. Thanks for putting this together, it's a great example of what you(and all of us) have been trying to get people to understand. Perfection isn't the answer. It's about what is coming from your heart and soul! You are really making a difference! Lary

Damn it Rick, you've surpassed my expectations. At the Drive-In getting your analysis. Thank you. Relationship of Command is one of my top ten albums. Enfilade is exceptional, the drumming on that track is amazing. It's funny that you highlighted the mixing by Andy Wallace. Omar hated the final mix of the album as he thought it didn't sound raw like ATDI, and accused Wallace of over mixing and over polishing the band's sound. I've had friends hear this album who said it's just chaos and loud noise. I keep telling them to listen to each track by tuning in on one instrument, then again with another. When you then listen as a whole each track is amazing and you appreciate the craftmanship behind it.

Fckin great episode, i love that you blend production with mixing aspects while talking about these songs
I remember the first time I heard this song in high school around 2000 and being blown away how different yet brilliant it was. It’s aggressive and attacking but plaintive, and discordant and distorted but melodic all wrapped up in weird proggy time changes and all of it feels like it shouldn’t work and yet it all come together in a brilliant package
Well that explains Mars volta's prog rock sound... Cedric and Omar wanted to do more with at the drive in, and hence Mars volta.... and I love how you analyze every facet of the band members playing. I instantly fell in love with this channel.

What makes Rick Beato great :) Somebody should make a video about you Rick The Man
Favorite part of this vid is how you give love to the drums and bass-they make ATDI groove like no other punk band. My hope is that you listened to the next track on the album (Sleepwalk Capsules). Paul plays a phenomenal syncopated bass line during the chorus that’s similar in vibe to what he plays during the bridge of this song.
The intro itself gave me goosebumps, haven't heard this one in a while! Listening every dissected part truly makes you appreciate even more what At the Drive did back then, thank you so much for this
You completely left out all Jim Wards vocals. HALF THE YELLING IS JIM.
Hey Rick, great contrast from your How Computers Ruined Rock Music video. Honestly, this is not my favorite genre, but I love the way you highlight the flow of energy between the musicians... it’s what I love most about music. So refreshing. You’re a one-of-kind, Rick. I also loved this video, despite not loving the song. Rick compares the track at the end to Nirvana in terms of energy, and I also hear Pixies influences in the guitar parts and meter changes (naturally, given Cobain's influences). The reason Nirvana and the Pixies sell crap tons of records to this day is, of course, those catchy damn vocal melodies.

AWESOME! I love ATDI. This album came out my first year at university and it changed me how I think about music. It's raw and real.
paraphrasing this but i once read that "jim creates incredible soundscapes for omar to go fuck up in the best way"
Buddy Rick, on air drums, gotta love it !! Great post my man .
A whole lot of Cedric's songs end up in triple meters. I always assumed that was down to the huge Latin jazz influence
Our sense of “in-tune” is largely shaped by western equal temperament, which is a compromise system. Exploring the in between space between semi-tones is really the last unexplored space in harmony and melody. I am enjoying the blending of non-western tuning concepts into so called popular styles. Thanks for your fun breakdowns of these songs.
I see a respected musician/engineer talk about At the drive in/the Mars volta, I immediately subscribe
What a video! What a song!! This made me feel the same way I felt back then when the song was released. I had no idea that the song was recorded live, but it makes total sense, given its brutal and visceral drive. Amaaazing band!!!
At the Drive-in along with The Mars Volta (Cedric and Omar are geniuses) are two of my favorite bands. Didn't know you had this one in your locker, Rick. Excellent choice!
Relationship of Command is one of the greatest albums ever made. God caught sight of a passionate five-piece hardcore band that hadn't quite reached their potential with In/Casino/Out, looked at his five-fingered hand, and touched fingertips to foreheads, birthing this divinely-inspired masterpiece.
For intensity I don't think you can get more than Cosmonaut off the album. Just an absolute banger, fearsome and inspiring. If only they'd been able to keep the wheels on their bandwagon

Rick, you're an inspiration. We need more Rick's in this world, keep on doing this, my faith in music is coming back. We need you!
Much appreciated Rick! This album totally surprised me in the early 2000's. So glad this made an impression on you and your ability to break it down and teach us about At the Drive In. Great video!!!
“Get away” is Ward, not Cedric, great vid!

Isn't the line "Cut away"? They are singing about scissors.

jspanos500 lol, great correction. I’ve heard “get away” for 19 years and you had to change my ear’s whole game.

Slenderchunk It took me many many years before I realised it was “cut” (and get) and I still always have to correct myself if I’m singing along

Amazing vid, thanks! What a great learning resource, your interpretation makes me excited!
He was spot on about the effect of hearing it for the first time. Part of the soundtrack of my high school years! I'm not a music person like him, so the way he broke it down was like hearing a foreign language, lol. However I love listening to someone describe music like he does.
Rick, I'd really love to see one of these in depth analysis of Mars Volta mixes! They're such weird mixes!!!
Relationship of command is such an amazing record
I highly recommend reading pitchfork's review on this album. it was written by the chief editor and it's fucking embarrassing, absolutely hilarious
So refreshing to hear bleeds and timing, tuning "issues", this is how music is!!! its not perfect or meant to be perfect. I get it that some music needs total perfection but this is awesome
I love the fact that Rick is fascinated by different musical genres (as the true music lover that he is). Experiencing the joy that shines through his videos is truly beautiful, especially when he's air drumming to the tune! :) Wonderful episode, Rick. Thank you so much for the immense work, man!
Please do The Smiths - How soon is now. How exactly Marr's did the guitar effects and the production in general would be very interesting. BTW - awesome channel and content! Thanks.

this is my favorite beato video, just because its one of my favorite songs ever (since 8th grade in 2002ish). thank you for doing this one!! seriously a masterpiece.
From Genesis to Red Hot Chili Peps to At the Drive In. Rick Beato- you the man!!!!
Things i noticed: The tracks themselves have bleed, but if you stack and mix them accordingly, they legit cancel out. Those detuned guitars I legit have never noticed (and i play this on full blast so gotdamn often) Cedric and Omar are mad geniuses. Thank you rick. I knew this song is good, but I never knew it was that good.
I love it when he does a fairly “obscure” track and the KZread brain drains request more of the same band. There’s a lot to get through, it’s pretty unlikely he’d do another when there’s been a fair bit of music in the last 70 years.
You never know what you're going to get with this series but you know it's going to be good!
I can't believe I haven't seen this video until now!!!! I love both this series AND the band! Great content. Always a pleasure watching these vids!
One of my all time favourite albums, thank you for doing this one.. So great to hear the individual tracks as the playing is so not normal on lots of Omars parts.
I've listened to this song for years and I honestly never noticed how out of tune Jim and Omar were. Listening to isolated tracks is killer sometimes.
I ordered this cd. Can't wait to hear more of these guys.
Thanks for the introduction to this awesome group!
I remember when this came out i just started playing bass in 2000 and between this song and helmet, weezer, i was learning them just trying to learn how to play the bass and figure out stuff... It's funny how certain songs will bring back forgotten memories
More than excellent. One of my favourite songs. Key words: visceral and progressive-Nirvana. Thanks, Rick. Best regards from Spain.

Creo que fueron los últimos Nirvana. Desde ahí el rock de guitarras crudas murió
Loved this. One of the bands that doesn’t get enough love.
sitting here on my chair, it's almost 2 pm, went down into the rabbit hole that is this series. man what a ride. the sheer joy. so many memories of concerts and doing music with my pals. wew. thank you rick. this is bliss
The thing you keep mentioning about how raw and imperfect this song is, is why I like so many underground punk and indie bands that are basically bedroom recording everything. Just straight passion and love for the music. It's messy and the production sounds like it's from 10 years ago, but it gives it so much charm that nothing on any major label gives. The Brave Little Abacus captures this feeling so well.
Don't really know why, but the second verse reminds me of Bloc Party's Silent Alarm album (released 5 years after this)
Please Jeff Buckley - Grace Faith No More - Evidence Gustavo Cerati - Lago en el cielo A lot of unbelievable details in the production of these songs.
