A tribute to Tinyo and the Birmingham Male Lions
=================================
Gear I use to film and produce my videos:
=================================
Canon R6 camera: amzn.to/3AXxx6P
Canon 100-500 RF lens: amzn.to/3pT9grZ
GoPro Hero 10: amzn.to/3RjaXdZ
iPhone 12Pro: amzn.to/3KvGKGs
Macbook Pro 13 inch: amzn.to/3e79adU
Sandisk 2TB Portable SSD hard drive: amzn.to/3R2GWiO
I have been lucky to photograph Tinyo Male Lion and the rest of the Birmingham Male Lions for Djuma and the Northern Sabi Sands for more than 6 years now. I first saw the Birmingham Male Lions on the 15th of August when all five were still together.
As many of you will know, Tinyo hasn't been seen since late October and there's obviously a chance he may have passed away. With this in mind, I decided to make a tribute to Tinyo and the Birmingham Male Lions by adding some video footage of Tinyo I took at MalaMala when I last saw him on the 17th of July 2021, as well as my best photos taken of the Birmingham Male Lions over the past six years.

    So sad. They were my favorite coalition. Mfumo was my favorite but I loved them all. Seeing their dynamics on safari live was so amazing. The day we saw Mfumo with a baby chameleon in his mane was so funny. The boys are truly missed. REST IN PEACE SWEET BEAUTIFUL BOYS! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

    The Birmingham Boys have had an impressive reign and ruled longer than most. They left nothing on the table and have brought me joy since they first rolled in to SS and were with the Nkuhumas. I saw the fall of the Mapogos, Selatis, Manjinglane, Matimbas, but the was something special about those Boys. Nhenha has always been, hands down, my favorite Boy. He’s strong, but I know he’s old, and now probably alone. I try to find the joy in their offspring. The lone Tsalala lioness, torchwood male, the Nkuhuma male,and definitely the Kambulas subs. Those girls and boys are gorgeous and the Kambula girls are fabulous mothers. “Time waits for no man” (or animal.)

    @@ubombogirl Mine too. I thought I would be more upset and them dying off, but they had great lives as far as wild African lions go. Life is rough in the bush! The loss of the entire Sparta pride, the Tsalala brothers and the Mangheni, especially Big Boy Mangheni almost killed me, and the Tsalala lioness… don’t even get me started! But it’s because their deaths were unexpected and untimely. Although her Birmingham sired daughter is all but grown and was as big as her mother, she’s the last Tsalala and she’s still alone and that’s no good for any lion.

    I`ve been watching lion coalitions for about 10 + years regularly and it `s crazy/sad/emotional to see young coalitions popping up out of nowhere, reign for a good few years ( if lucky 6-8 years like the Majingilanes or the Mapogos) and vanish/die old. That`s nature!

    We all have our favorites lions and as time passes, sadly we will have to face the end of those favorites on this earth. Uncertainty is even more heart-wrenching, but since Tinyo, one lioness and three cubs have not been seen now in two months...we need to appreciate his life He had recovered so well from his battle with the Avocas; such a great King. Thank you so much for this tribute. I don't know how rangers and guides deal with these times as they are no doubt much more invested, so when we see these tributes come out, we have consider their loss as well. Well done and thank you.

    Please folks stop saying and assuming he’s dead tinyo was seen with nhena patrolling and on a carcass around the week of thanksgiving or first few days of December so until I c his body tinyo is very smart he lost a few pounds but he’s always be the one who will fight until death and nhena was the brut he was bigger but followed tinyo lead so however they communicate here recently they have been taking huge risks splitting up to cover more ground and then they circle all the way back around and meet back up with the kambula super pride and they stay with them for days sleeping and playing with the kids and showing the adult females some love as well by mating with them and protecting them from other lions, hyenas wouldn’t dare come near the pride with one of the bboys but having both there with the 10 adult females there no way any harm will challenge them during rest and family time so no disrespect let’s keep our hopes up and this gentleman doing a tribute was not a bad idea but it’s for wen an legacy of the Original males has passed and nhena is very alive with one half of the kambula pride and tinyo in my opinion on this only point is he’s with the other half

    You're a very sweet man to make a tribute to them. He was a force to be reckoned with for all but this last year, but it was clear that he was aging and life wasn't an easy thing for him anymore, especially with so many younger coalitions vying for his prides and real estate. To me it is obvious that male lions live such an intense and difficult life from start to finish that they aren't given many years. Some do better than others. Tinyo is dead I believe, because I don't think Nhena would ever leave him unprotected to starve. He loved his brother! But what a life he lived. What a lion he was!

    Always sad to see animals you follow through the ups and downs of life, wild or domestic. It allows us an escape from our own ups and downs that all creatures struggle and rise and eventually fall. I think its a little sad with some, for me this is the case. Tinyo and Nhenha are the last of what i think of as the great coalitions of Sabi Sabi, Mapogos....even if i think at one point they were probably not good for lion society in general as captivating as they were. Mhjengi's, Matimba's, Selati's, and of course the Bboys. When Nhenha finally goes, which as of today 12/26/22 is still holding strong with his nephew. Will be an end of an era. They made Sabi Sabi what it is today, even with all the probably great lion coilitions before them. These five coalitions open up Sabi Sands to the world. For that they hold a bigger meaning for lion conservation.
