Mashatu is located in Botswana's Tuli Block in the far eastern corner of the country. It's a massive 30000+ hectare private game reserve and, although there are no buffalo and rhino there, it's one of the best places in the world to see and photograph big cats! Lions, cheetah and especially leopards are plentiful and relaxed at Mashatu and combined with the unique terrain, makes for some unforgettable wildlife photography opportunities.
Mashatu is also one of the best places to see and photograph elephants. If you come in the dry season, between June and October, you stand an excellent chance of seeing them at Photo Mashatu's Matabole Underground Hide.
In this episode we talk about the different seasons and how they differ at Mashatu, Mashatu's camps and why we like them, the guides, the vehicles, the photo opportunities and the underground hide - everything you need to know about Mashatu! We even have a competition again to see who has taken the best photo at Mashatu and you get to vote who wins.

Tented camp is our favourite by far. Lying in bed at night listening to the night sounds is wonderful. At main camp you could be in any hotel room, yes it's very nice but it's not "our Africa ". Tented camp is more relaxed and for us it's "home". I think the tents are absolutely fine, how much time do you actually spend in the tent anyway? Rustic is just 👌🏻. It's all about the animals, scenery and wonderful guides and staff for us. After 5 visits to Mashatu we totally agree it's a very, very special place. My vote for best photo goes to Lance, stunning.

Went in 2017 to Mashatu on my very 1st safari (1st camp). Fell in love with leopards. What a beautiful place. Could have used your advice then. I'm glad you enjoyed it, William. Unfortunately photo safaris are expensive. Believe me, we try our best to keep the costs as low as possible and it's not always the rooms and food you are paying for, it's the photographic opportunities. The better the game viewing, the higher the rates at these lodges...and there's nothing we as photographic guides and safari companies can do to lower it. Having said that, send Lance an e-mail and ask him to keep you posted on his workshops, some of which might fit your pocket.

@@williamryan3254, Pungwe Safari Camp in Manyeleti Game Reserve is very rustic but still fully catered and in an excellent game viewing area, so if you’re looking for good value for money, that’s a good option. If you do a Google search you’ll see I’ve done a camp review video of Pungwe on this channel before.

  • @TheSafariExpert

Martin, no - Serolo is part of Tuli Wilderness west of Mashatu. It’s a stunning tented camp (fully catered or self catering) and it’s in a stunning location along the Limpopo. Game viewing, however, is not as good as in Mashatu. It’s still worth visiting, though - I love it there!

I agree, Rose - it’s a pity that it’s not more affordable. Top tip: if you want to experience something similar, visit Mapungubwe NP in South Africa (just south of Mashatu) or Tuli Wilderness in Botswana (just west of Mashatu). The terrain is just as stunning, but game viewing is a bit more challenging. Having said that, I have had incredible predator sightings at Tuli Wilderness before and magical ellie sightings at Mapungubwe. And, both have a yellow flower flush as well 🌼🌼🌼
