Photographing Steam Trains with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens [plus a Flying Banana]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Back in the Eden Valley on the Settle to Carlisle Railway Line I set out to photograph the Merchant Navy Class ‘British India Line’ steam train with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. After practicing on the Northern Rail Express Sprinter train, I was surprised by a Flying Banana not the fruit, but the bright yellow InterCity 125 Measurement Train (NMT). Finally the SR Merchant Navy Class 35018 British India Line appeared to great jubilation. I caught it again on it’s returned journey. As usual the light faded just as the steam train made its appearance.
Trains featured:
10.51 - British Rail Class 158 Express Sprinter from Northern Rail no.158796.
12.32 - Measurement Train (NMT) ‘Flying Banana’ InterCity 125
14.40 - SR Merchant Navy Class 35018 British India Line
18.42 - SR Merchant Navy Class 35018 British India Line

Andrew great video mate, the steam trains look majestic chugging down the line and you captured some amazing images. My grandad was a boilermaker and as an apprentice he worked on old steam trains so i heard all the story's about steam trains and which ones he worked on. Thanks for that video mate.

Hi Andrew that second viewpoint was really great. The video of The train moving along the embankment in the English countryside says everything about what makes railways so compelling. A fabulous shot mate!

Andrew, what lense and camera were used for that video steam engine video near the video end point. Im more interested in video. Are you 200 yards away? Much appreciated. TG5 and what lense? Gary

I used a Sony Alpha NEX-F3 with the Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS at around 150mm recording non interlaced on mp4 format. yes about 200yards. Sorry I didn't use the TG5 though it does shoot 4K and will doe 150mm, but is a bit soft at longer focal length it's integral zoom lens is 24-150mm full frame 35mm equivalent.

That was fantastic Andrew! Walking, talking,.vlogging at the same time 😂 I loved the two false alarms at the first location but practice makes perfect! Great shots from that location but the second location was way better! So cool to see that beauty coming around the bend.! Great video and great shots! Really enjoyed this as I've always had a fascination with trains and photograph them often over here. Hope you are doing well, have a great weekend!

Thanks Paul, I'm learning to multi task 🤪 Yes the second one was better but the light had gone as usual. More trains in the future if the weather and time table align. Have a Awesome weekend too. Choo Choo 🚇 where's the steam train emoji ?

I think you where south of Lazonby for the first shots but the position south of Armathwaite was a better vantage point , I drive trains over there so know the line very well . Not sure if you use Realtime trains ? gives you up to date times of all trains in the UK . I drive the blue DRS ones over there and before that the red DBS ones lol atb Dave

Shsssss don't tell everybody 🤣 Yes I use Realtime Trains but the phone signal is patchy and it sometimes doesn't update fast enough. Do you drive the new ones they got a few years ago? Hybrid ones? 😀

@@andrewfindlayphoto yep drive them all 37,57,66, 68 and 88s . Yeah it’s not the best area for a phone signal in the Eden valley

Hi Andrew I am looking for some advice. I am thinking of buying a second hand Canon 70-200 f4 lens. I will always use it on a tripod so do you think I need IS on the lens? I hope you can help. Cheers John

IS is useful in windy conditions even on a tripod to reduce vibration when shooting landscapes. I probably only use it on 1 or 2 shots a year and they are not good photos. Save your money, you don't need IS for landscapes.

Apparently there were no Asian women to distract you from your mission this time. So you still had light enough. Do you ever use OOC jpegs or always process the raw? Do you use the LR Canon defaults or ignore them?

I always shoot raw. But I use a modified 'Standard' Canon default as a start. - 1 contrast, 0 sharpening, +1 saturation. I process my photos like Alex Nail. see his video and his geek out ones. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3-EsbV9iZCrg9o.html
