Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM 'L' lens review with samples (APS-C and full-frame)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Here's another stalwart of Canon's 'L' lens lineup - the famous, and popular, 100-400mm IS USM. It's getting on a bit nowadays - is it still as sharp as we'd all like it to be?

Great review Chris! As always.
Hi Chris, Another great review, keep up the great work and congratulations on your engagement. James
Amazing, you have hands on every lense. This old guys is great, I think that's why Canon is kicking asses in the Camera market.
Watched this video a couple of years ago and it helped me make up my mind between it and the 400 f/5.6. The 100-400 is an awesome lens, I'll have to wear it out before I replace it!

Great review. I've used the lens in a number of occasions including some sports and snowboard photography, and only recently tried it out in recording video from far away. The image stabilization is superb when used with a tripod!
Great video, Christopher!! May God bless you!!!

A terrific review! Recently I purchased this lens, since the secondhand price is similar to the sigma and tamron 100-400mm, it would be nice to see the comparison review between them.
amazing review :)
Thanks for the video. I bought this lens used for about 1/3 of the price of the new one. The price of the new II lens is too much for my needs, but there are good buys on this old one as people want to upgrade.
one of the best canon lenses, i dont regret having this one

Or the 300mm f4L non is :)
Even though it’s not supposed to because of the resolving power issues with the 90D I did however manage to get it pretty sharp on that 90D. The sharpness was even better than on my full frame.
Purchased this lens after watching this video, Got one for 200$ and i m using it with canon 6d. Love the solid build on this
+Christopher frost photography Do you plan on doing a review for the mark 2 100-400? Great reviews by the way, I always check your channel before I buy a lens. Thanks for the hard work.

id like to see the review on the new version of this :)
Great video Christopher. The Tamron 70-300 actually looks a better performer than the 100-400 IS and its an L lens. How does that work? One question, you haven't looked at the new 100-400 IS II. Would you have a look and let me know how it stacks up, as your assessment is really unbiased
Canon officially confirmed that they are working on the new version. When it comes out, will you review it?
It's sad to hear the image quality of this boyo is just okay, but I'm very impressed by its distortion control!
Hi Chris Thanks for the lens reviews, please can you give a little advice?? I have a Cano 70D which I use to take images of my son's rugby team I have £500.00 to spend on a sports lens but which is best? Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 Or Tamron SP 70-300 F4-5.6 Di Vc
I use this lens with a 1DX MK3 and the images are razor sharp ........
I guess it depends from leans to leans. But my ef 100-400 which I bought 5 years ago is very sharp especially on 300-400. I can precisely see every hair on buffalo head from 20 meters. Your images (or video conversion) are not even close to that. It is my favorite leans so far.

Chris. If you could only choose one lens. Which would it be?
Chris, I love your reviews! You mention in one of them that you reviewed the Samyang 12mm f/2.8.... Could you please upload it, or point me in its direction? Keep up the good work!

***** Ha ha! It's always the way.
I got this lens ..it is good one for wildlife photography...but I might need 2x canon teleconverter to get more focal length to be 800 mm for shooting far away birds .
Could u please review the newer version of this lens....??
Why does the rear lens mount show Metal to Metal wear that looks very scratchy, like it is very old and badly worn?
Please review the canon 70-300 L
I'm looking to add to my lenses with one that will serve me for wildlife photography. Not having the kind of megabucks for the rocket launcher type lenses generally displayed by the professionals, I was lured towards this canon 100-400mm lens. However, I can't say your VTR has convinced me that it would fit the bill. If anything I feel a little let disappointed but then you don't cover the kind of subject matter I would hope to be pursuing. I might hold back and do a little more research. Thanks anyway.

Hi, Christopher, comparing this lens (100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM L) with the Canon EF 300mm f / 4L IS USM on Canon 7D, which is better of the two for wildlife photography? Thanks for the video.

I haven't tested the 300mm, but I'd prefer the 100-400for its versatility
I use a Canon EOS 750D, and use a 18-135mm & 100-400mm Lens, the 100-400mm mk1 Lens is good but I'm finding it a bit too heavy, do you think it would be too much of a step back if I exchange it for a EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM, I know I won't have the range just not sure what to do for the best, exchange or keep

I have a Canon 70D with a Canon 70-200mm F4 L lens [Non IS] - I am looking to increase my focal length for birds and wild life and can't decide between the Canon 1.4x III extender and the 100-400 mm F4.5-5.6mm IS II L - would welcome you comments and suggestions - weight - price - image quality - stabilization etc etc

Soumitra Ghosh check out 300 4.0 l prime if you use two bodies for sports. pair it with your 70 to 200 lens
Which one would you used for birding??? The prime 400mm or the 100-400. I have them both along with a 7D2 but I always use the prime because I am afraid of introducing dust and dirtying my 7D2 sensor. I say that because I blame the 100-400 for dirtying my Canon 6D.
@christopherfrost

If you have a good tripod then definitely the prime 400mm. If you want to shoot handheld then maybe the image stabilization on the 100-400 will swing it for you
@anthonym3051

Christopher Frost Photography Supposedly the 400mm is sharper but I do lose a lot of images due to motion blur when photographing in the woods where the lighting is not great. I guess using the 100-400 will get me more keepers. But like I said earlier I am afraid of introducing dust into my 7D2 as I did in the 6D when I used this trombone style lens which shoots air into the camera when compressed.

Depends on which 400mm you want to get; if it's the 2.8 or 4, go with the prime, the 5.6 and the 100-400 are about equal in price

Hey Chris. Compared to the 400 f5.6, is this lens soft at 400? And can that be fixed with just a little post sharpening?
@christopherfrost

Daniel Diament The prime lens is sharper. You'd need a lot of post-sharpening, and even then it won't be great...

Christopher Frost Photography Thank you so much, I will keep that in mind. I'm flirting with the idea of saving up and buying the Canon 6D so that I can use the higher quality lenses. I was going to get a 70D but I know this is going to be a lifetime hobby for me so perhaps I will just make the jump to a full-frame sooner rather than later. Thanks again for all your videos.

Average Consumer From what I've seen the 400mm prime is way sharper, but you do sacrifice some flexibility, as well as IS
I just bought this but returned it for the sigma 150-600. I'm very glad I did. The ef 100-400 is a good lens, but it's too soft @400 and auto focus is ok. If you're considering this lens, look at the sigma 150-600. It cost the same price used from adorama. My 2 cents

I don't like when you say 'it doesn't really let in a lot of light..' 5.6 is a great aperture. i use my 300 f4 indoors all the time. no problems. although, a bit of a difference with my 1.8.
@christopherfrost
7 жыл бұрын
f/5.6 is not a fast aperture at all. It's certainly usable when you're shooting outside, but it really is not a fast aperture and it really is not letting in a lot of light compared to an f/2.8 or even an f/4 constant aperture lens.

Christopher Frost Photography In that respect would the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L with extender be better for walk around lens? Issue I have is the Sigma 150-600c in low light on 7dmkii and minimum 150mm 2.8m focus distance can be limiting for some shots. I would find f5 to 5.6 a bit better in the 200-300mm range than the f6.3 of the Sigma. Its more a case of wanting to freeze smaller birds in motion in average light conditions (forests etc) without having to push iso too much. What do you reckon?
I hope the make a Mark II version of this lens

Came here after seeing it for sale (used), and then checking it on www.the-digital-picture.com - where, to my huge surprise, it seemed quite mediocre. Maybe it's simply too old. Thought this might be my first amazing razor sharp L lens.. but after both this review and the aforementioned site, I think not.

@@christopherfrost Thanks for clarifying. The camera I just bought was also semi old tho (100D). While the most comparable test camera on that site is the slightly better 7D Mark II, I ended up ordering a used EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM instead - it really seemed to perform wayyy above average.. especially with the price range taken into consideration.

All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
One can get a mint 100-400 for around $750, while the second hand II version goes for $1.500 (and is better to buy new for around $1.600). Is it worth the difference? I have a 5Ds, but plan to get a 6D for low light conditions. Should I get fine results from the 20MP 6D with first generation 100-400?

The Mark 1 version will be okay on the 6D. Honestly, I would go for the Sigma 100-400 instead if that's your budget - it's nice and sharp
