"Trese" is a custom balisong project with a 32 cm overall length, the name it carries means "thirteen" besides the fact that this is my 13th balisong design, the number 13 has significant relevance and symbolism to the client and to the chosen blade profile itself.
The blade profile is inspired by the "Yakan Pira" a traditional blade most commonly traced its native origin to the Yakan tribe, considered among the 13 moro groups of the Philippines, are originally from the island of Basilan, located southwestern point of Mindanao but has been caught between political conflict, most of the Yakan's are forced to flee the island and relocate in Zamboanga and re-establish a peaceful living.
The resiliency of the Yakan people reflects also the personal experiences of my client, being able to experience a near-death experience after being ambushed, followed shortly by the battle he has won against cancer.
The client who happens to be the 13th among the siblings and has always believed that 13 is his lucky number commissioned this piece which was coincidentally completed on the 13th of the month will be the rightful keeper of my 13th balisong design, "Trese".
May this piece serve as a symbol of courage, resiliency, and triumph, and of a constant reminder to the keeper about the blessing of knowing the true value of life.
Details:
The 14cm blade is forged from a leaf spring steel, oil quenched and tempered, with file works along the spine near the tang and adorned with scroll engraving.
Its edge is ground convex with a micro bevel, and the handle construction is of aluminum and brass housing with kamagong and narra scales held in place by brass pins, accentuated by brass tubes with bone inserts.
The bolsters are made of brass, and its pivot pins are solid arc brass screws, the latch is also made of brass sculpted to resemble the tree of life.
