"Balikon"
is a balisong with a 36cm overall length, its blade is made from a steel file with a drop point profile, file works adorn the length of the spine, and the blade features a Palawan pangolin sculpted near the tang.
The handle construction is of brass and aluminum for the housing, the bolsters and latch are made of brass, and the scales are made of kamagong adorned with gold-plated twisted brass wires, and brass tubes with bone insert rivetted by brass rods.
The Philippine pangolin or Palawan pangolin is a nocturnal animal with keratin scales covering the whole body which rolls into a ball becoming almost impenetrable by predators. The Palawan pangolin is locally known as "Balintong" but is also called "Balikon" in Coron, Palawan; hence the name of this project.
This project aims to raise awareness and appreciation for this little creature for this scaled mammal is also one of the most illegally poached and trafficked animals in the world, now on the brink of extinction, its scales and skin are being harvested for medicinal properties and for making belts and bags.
The irony, despite the pangolin being one of the most armored animals, it is also one of the animals that need as much protection, not from the predators in the wild but from us humans.
