"Punyal"
"Punyal", is believed to have originated from the Spanish word "puñal" which means "dagger" It may be a double-edged or a single-edged knife that can be used as a utility cutting tool or a concealed close-quarter weapon ideal for stabbing.
In the Philippines, there are a wide variety of traditional daggers with variations of names. To name a few, there is the "Hinalung" of the Ifugao, the "Punyong" or "Bunong" of the Tagalog, while Panay islands have a short knife they call "Punyong", and the Visayas and Mindanao islands have the "Gunong/Gunung".
This build is my modern rendition of a "Punyal", inspired by the overall profile of a Maranao Gunong and the ornate craftsmanship of the Maranao bladesmiths, This "Punyal" has an overall length of 29 cm, with a 17 cm double-edged blade made from a leaf spring steel, 5.5 cm at the thickest, adorned with engravings acid etched on both sides of the blade.
It is a full tang construction with a century-old Narra wood for the handle scale and a combination of brass and cow's bone adornment to mimic the ferrule part of that in a traditional gunong.
The wooden scabbard is also made from the same century-old Narra used for the handle, with the locket, chape, reinforcing fittings, and belt clip all made from brass.
