4 Tips: How to Use Tutorials to Improve Your Art Quick

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I take you through my 4 Tips on How to Use Tutorials to Improve Your Art Quick. I also take you through my process and my goals for completing this artwork which can be found on Kirsty Partridge's Patreon.
I am no longer afraid to jump in with color portraits. I never had any issues with black and white or monochrome, but once I added color all bets were off. Using the tips I shared with is exactly how I approached this tutorial and I feel is what made a difference in improving so fast.
I have blindly followed other tutorials drawing portraits, but never seemed to really get the hang of it. I share all the pieces I have attempted colored portraits with and you will see that they were not up to the standards of my other work.
Once I went through this using these steps, I felt I learned more with this portrait than any other I have tried or followed. It's not to say the others weren't good instructors, they just didn't fit into my first two tips, nor did I approach any tutorial using my last 2 tips. So they do work.
I still have more to learn, but I now have the confidence that I will be successful at it with what I learned here.
Give them a try and let me know what you think. Yes, stepping out on your own can be scary, but until you give it a go you never know what you can achieve. You just might surprise yourself.

Thank you and absolutely agree. So hard to follow a tutorial if you don’t understand exactly what they are trying to explain

Good and true tips Wendi. I wish I had known these tips 4-5 years ago and truthfully I just recently started doing these tips. Especially meaning not following the step by step but rather using the tutorial as a guide,,,,like a reference per se'. Another benefit by doing so at least for me is I found myself more engaged mentally and thus more rewarding in a sense of accomplishment when I do a piece from a tutorial.

Thanks so much Steve for watching and commenting. It’s amazing how much difference it makes by doing that isn’t it? I feel you see a much faster improvement in your skills as well as building confidence. Btw I think I am going to come to you from now on for my words. Mentally engaging....love that! 🤗🥰

@@Artista365 LOL,,,,,right at the moment I am mentally challenged. I hit the like button on my original comment for no reason at all. Then to add insult to injury I still haven't figured out how to put that heart I see that you did. When I hit the like it doesn't give me that option of a heart. So yes, I am mentally challenged today. Oh well, it happens :)

Haha. Steve. You crack me up. Nothing wrong with liking your comment. I mean you wrote you must like it right😉? Not sure if you have the heat option or just the video creator. I think just the video creator but not completely sure on that. My option for that is waaaay over on the right side in the form of a heart ❤️. If you don’t see that then I guess only the creator has that option. Annnd if it makes you feel any better I seem to be mentally challenged every day as of late🤣🤣🤣🤣. Or it could just be old age setting in. Either way I think we both in the same boat 😉. Glad to go on this journey with you. You certainly have a special way of lightening the journey up 🤗. You da bestest!

@@Artista365it is quite rare I see anyone actually analyzing their way of using vidio teaching. I also dare to say that many people are afraid of making mistakes, and that they do not throw themselves over their own paintings, which I thought is a shame because these are the mistakes we all learn from

Yes exactly. I couldn’t agree more. This is one reason I did this video. I always struggle with colored pencil portraits and had to find a way to learn and improve quickly. I followed others tutorials as I mentioned in the video but I did it traditionally and felt I didn’t learn as much from them and still struggled. By implementing these tips I was able to learn so much. Thought others would also find this information useful

Wow, Wendi, this is such useful information and just looking at your significant progress is very inspiring. Being someone who follows so many tutorials by different artists, I found this very helpful as I kinda feeling stuck in developing my own style which you mentioned toward the end. I agree with finding an artist that matches your style of learning because what one person means can be absolutely clueless for someone trying to learn. I also find a huge difference between written and video tutorials. Since I'm a very visual person I do prefer video ones though I have followed many written tutorials and had great results. I just hope I don't stay in tutorial "pit" forever and get out of it with having something of my own that I can be proud of and be recognized for. Thank you, Wendi!!!!

Thank you so much. So glad it was useful. I kind of felt stuck with cp portraits and this was really my last ditch effort to try to figure it out. I have since he able to see those colors and can more easily choose them for myself. It is difficult to get out of tutorial mode for sure, but you could easily not rely on them as much by using this process. And it doesn’t matter the medium. Once you have basics of blending, layering and what materials to use it’s really all up to you. I have no doubt you would do just fine without a tutorial. I do find when you follow a tutorial you also tend to slow down a bit and when working on your one piece sometimes we rush through it. What we lack in skill we can usually make up for in time providing you know exactly when you want the final piece to look like. Taking the time to ensure it looks like you want it is key. I know because that’s how I attack every project. I am very new to fine art, so I know taking the time works and makes up for skill. The skill comes as you figure it out and then speed follows. Feel free to write anytime about anything or have any questions. Always learning something.

@@Artista365 Thank you, that's great to know. I will try harder to apply learned skills and techniques on my own. I know I have hard time with textures and I don't see same as experienced artists do. Maybe someday it will all click together and I'll know what to do hehe :)
