How to Use Shapes to Create Realistic Drawings

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I share with you my approach to using shapes to create realistic drawings. By breaking down your piece into various shapes you can then see how they each work together and eventually blend together to create a realistic drawing. I share tips on creating glass and bends in glass.

Thank you shandri. Really appreciate it. I’m not a bear drinker but thought it was a very cool glass and knew I had to recreate it

Awesome. So glad that you found it helpful. Too often I hear I have to know what it is to draw. Now you really don’t as long as you put the shape in you see then it will work out just fine. The group project is a great example of this.

I’m just now catching up on missed videos. This was very well done Wendi. I definitely agree with your comment about stepping back to view it as a whole. I almost always work with shapes too but after a while, my mind goes a little nuts 🤪😄 because it doesn’t look like anything. Stepping back to look at it as a whole from a bit further away is encouraging. Seeing it like that makes everything fall into place, look right and gives me incentive to keep on going.

Oh thank you for watching. Yes it is amazing out focused we can get when we work. After looking it it so long in those shapes you start to lose perspective until you do actually step back and see it as a whole. I totally agree that seeing it coming together definitely gives you more incentive to continue on. So many times I have been tempted to stop. In fact I was looking through some of my older works and saw a video of a piece I threw away because I thought it looked horrible. Looking at it now I wonder what possessed me at that moment cause it really wasn’t as bad as I perceived it to be at that moment. 🤦‍♀️

Great video, Wendi! Thank you for sharing really helpful tips. I love your "shape mode" approach as I see it quite useful and helps create very realistic results. The turtle drawing I'm currently working on I have started with blocking in dark shapes to help me establish the values. After I did it with the entire drawing, I then try to approach each section as a series of shapes and draw what I see. I do vary methods though depending on what I want to achieve.

Oh thank you. So glade they are helpful. The shape mode is so important especially when working on complex’s subjects. Like you I also vary my methods per drawing but essentially always work with some sort of shapes and not really thinking too much about what it is I am drawing. Thanks so much for sharing your process.

Incredibly beautiful and awesome work Wendi 😍👍 I think my more successful drawings are when I concentrate on shape's, but I am still at the stage for every OK drawing I do I have at least 2 disasters lol😂

Thank you. It is amazing how just your mind set can change how successful a drawing is. I have lots of disasters as well. Part of the growing process. Keep practicing and soon you’ll have less disasters for every good drawing but those are inevitable. It’s how you learn and grow
