2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Quick Review
Today on Extra Throttle House, Thomas and James check out the all new Hyundai Ioniq 6 in its “Ultimate Trim.” Costing 64,689 CAD (57,215 USD), this Hyundai aims to disrupt the EV Sedan market - but its stiffest competition comes from within its own brand. With similar pricing and range to the Ioniq 5, the guys answer the age old question - should 5 be afraid of 6? And what will happen when the 7 comes to market in the coming months? Is Hyundai just cannibalizing itself within its own nomenclature? Watch - SUBSCRIBE!

Agreed, especially if you don't need the extra space that the Ioniq 6 provides. The real problem with the Ioniq 6 are the trims. The good options and features are stuck behind the trim with the bigger wheels, which takes away the great range, which was the whole justification for the I6's design in the first place.

Agreed, but dealing with Hyundai Canada is a whole different matter in how they treat their customers.
There's no doubting Ioniq 5's looks or practicality, and the range is similar in the upper trims (SEL & Limited), but--as others have also stated--the range difference is 19% (361 miles vs 303, or 316 vs 266) in SE trim, which is not insignificant. From the listed Cd and MPGe, it's also safe to assume that gap will widen on highway, where range is likely to be a bigger factor. It's entirely possible someone prioritizes range over interior space or appearance. Since the exterior design contributes to that, it'd be unfair to call it just a styling/marketing exercise.
The Extra Throttle House open discussion format is so nice and perfect for this kind of review
Ioniq 5 N is coming ftw. The biggest issue with Ioniq 5 is lack of buttons to operate basic things like audio..you guys forget that. The ev6 and gv 60 fix that
I think the main thing that's gonna motivate some people to choose the Ioniq 6 is the extra range. iirc the base model 6 has around 100 km more

Even the original 2022 Ioniq 5s had HDA2 which included lane change and the detection of being cutoff and slowing down automatically. Great video and conversation. I am a long time EV driver and that is rare considering how little they been around and the small population that actually likes owning one. EV's are just too expensive for the general population and the range isn't there yet. I understand material costs rare metals and all but if we really want to push EV's we need to make them cheaper and easier to charge. A Bolt is probably the best EV or a Nissan Leaf for costs but always have a second car as well. I think people need to realize they are just commuting cars to eliminate half the costs of owning a vehicle
@Seitenwerk

Model 3 in the US can be quite affordable depending on the state. The base model is $40K (which is now below the average price of a new car BTW), and on top of that you get a federal tax rebate of $7500 and in some states thousands more off that, which gets the price down to roughly what you'd pay for a Honda Accord. Once you factor in what you'll save on gas and maintenance it will cost you less than a Honda Civic over 5 years. I get that not everyone can afford a new car, but if you can afford a new car, you can afford a Tesla model 3. And as you know, Bolt and Leaf are even cheaper (though far inferior IMO).

nice unique shape; too much black plastic add-ons for a $60k car' awkward resolution to the design of the tail lights.
Hyundai has been knocking it out of the park with respect to new style/style direction. Where they take a few steps back is with the details. This car (much like the Ioniq 5) suffers from WAY too much weird body cladding on the lower portion of the vehicle. If I purchased this car, I'd have that weird black strip that runs into the back bumper painted body color - that would go a long way to tone done how weird the little vertical elements on the front and rear bumper really break up such a beautiful car. This is another example of where the concept car was WAY better looking. Perhaps for the 2nd gen - they'll edit some of the plastic bits and just focus on the shape. Great review, as always - I love your channel.
Y'all totally missed the point! This is a hyper mileage long distance modern day streamliner highway cruiser. The Ioniq5 is more practical but the 6 gets 60 more miles of range - thats huge! It reminds me of something Saab would make, down to that rear end design and center moutned window switches ✨
As others have said, the reason to choose the 6 over the 5 is efficient/range, and style preference. But I also get what James and Thomas are getting at. Being on the same platform and close to same weight, they haven't differentiated the ride/handling enough to give up the utility. The trunk is really small, 12cf. The model 3 is 15, or 19, depending on how it's measured. The 6 is a subcompact trunk in a midsize sedan. So it's a family sedan without the trunk. And feels the same as the 5 in driving. So I see why they would choose the 5. Interesting that the biggest draw, 360 miles range, is on a trim level not available till later in summer...

I now own the Ioniq 6 and love it. It improved so many little things from the Ioniq 5, although hopefully some of those things come to the Ioniq 5 via software updates. The only minor criticisms are the front sensors still go off in reverse and can't be silent by default in reverse, and the current limiter of 115 mph seems a little low not that I would ever try to go that fast outside of the track. If you want a track car, you should wait for the Ioniq 5N or 6N, but they will cost a lot more.

The Ioniq 5 or EV6 seem to be the better choice personally. The Prophecy was a home run and they kinda botched it in production imo. Great video again guys.
It seems you completly missed the reason for this car. It´s all about range and efficiency. Pretty sure it´s the fastest car to cover a 1000 miles on the market, if you have access to 350 kw chargers, like we do in big parts of Europe. That said, I agree with you about the Ioniq 5 is a better daily driver. And on a side note, my Ioniq 5 from 2021 can change lanes, it´s part of HDA 2, that you can get in the Ioniq 6. As always a nice alternative video about a car. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your stuff even if you don´t have all the facts straight :)
Those Fins inside the car a for the side view mirrors which in Korea are cameras , not legal in Canada. The rear lights are different too.
Boys this is a comfortable car. Not everything needs to have stiff suspension.

But all car race car.
I know what James meant, and I agree, but I will say my Pixel 3 died about a year ago and so I had to get a new phone and ended up with the Pixel 6... I honestly miss the Pixel 3. It wasa better design in almost every way... Fast enough, screen was big enough, felt *way* better in the hand, fingerprint reader location was *way* more logical, wasn't as big and felt more natural in a pocket. Really a shame and I wish I had shopped around more for something as close to that as I could get, because most of the newer phones aren't well designed.

The new Samsungs are pretty good in the hand (if the S ones aren't in your budget, the A series are really good as well, I own one myself, and they don't cost an arm and a leg)

I've said this several times to different people, but compared to my s22 ultra, objectively I believe the s21 ultra is a better phone in both design and overall performance. Kind of wished I went to that when I upgraded from the s20 ultra, or waited for the s23 ultra (lots of reviews noting it's a genuine upgrade compared to the current turd in my pocket). However if there's one phone design that I would love to see modernize, it's the LG G2. That design is my all time favorite for a phone, right next to the HTC One M7.

@@arian_s_collection Nah I'm in North America. Overall the phone performs lovely, it's just that compared to the s21 or s23, it feels like Samsung didn't optimize it for the amount of features thrown in. I.E: Battery life is terrible (comparatively because not a lot of things got a S.O.T greater than seven hours), and somehow worst than the s21 ultra

@@TheElectricGhost damn.
Where can I get those mounts you have attatched to the sunroof and can I use them to mount an arm for my SM7B?
The visual quality of this video is impressive. It’s totally overshadowed by the gargantuan amount of screen real estate those cameras and suction cups take up.
@throttlehouse what about the Tesla Model Y LR? You didn't mentioned. Surely that'll give you the necessary range and charging infrastructure + Added performance you need for your day to day.
Lets face it, this thing looks terrible! The IONIQ 5 on the other hand is stunning.
It’s not just a reskinned Ioniq 5 though. It’s on the same platform obviously, but they’ve made engineering changes to the battery system and other electrics in the name of efficiency.

And yet it has less power and less range vs the competition. Nice job Hyundai

@ManuNarang well it has a smaller battery. It is currently one of the most energy efficient vehicles, if not the most, you can buy.

@@danielboyd7810 for reference, a Model 3 Long range (which isn't as efficient as the standard range) is rated for 135 Wh/km, whereas the Ioniq 6 is rated for 139Wh/km. Also, correction: one of the most energy efficient vehicles you *can't* buy. Hardly any electric inventory at any Hyundai or Kia dealerships - Even if you find a dealer willing to take your order, be prepared for massive wait times and exorbitant markups. Legacy automakers are shooting themselves in the foot.
My 2023 Ioniq drives so much better than the 2022 Ioniq 5 loaner I had while the dealer was attempting to fix the lack of fast DC charging I am still experiencing, hope to have that elephant leave the room this Thursday with another charger related part that will be replaced and allow me to finally do some long distance road trips we bought his car for!
Hyundai Kia and Genesis is working so hard and is improving like never before I especially like Ioniq 5 Genesis and EV 9 They still have room to improve but they have been checking all the right boxes

Except, Hyundai Canada is terrible to deal with. The EVs are good, customer relations ... bad, very bad. That matters.
Can't stand the look of this thing, but weirdly happy that Hyundai have the guts to try things. Absolutely love the 5 however. Hit (5) and a Miss (6) imo.
Thomas hit the nail on the head with the iPhone to EV analogy. Car manufacturers have effectively made cars disposable.

I don't completely agree. The phones had underwhelming hardware even for the time. So today's processing would not run on them. The cars are finished products and will continue to run. Sure there will be cars with better CPUs, bigger and faster batteries. But the car itself will run just as well as it does today. No different than a Toyota Corolla from 2010 vs today.
13:15 contrary to what James says, some people do in fact long for the iPhone 4 size/shape. But definitely not the outdated tech.
So as an "appliance car" the Ioniq 5 makes way more sense. But then that begs the question: is the Ioniq 6, at least the current non-N version, a good enough "weekend car" or "enthusiast car" to justify the tradeoffs in cargo volume/etc? Does the RWD option/etc matter? If it drives exactly like an Ioniq 5 but is less practical, then does it really make sense to counterpoint it as an alternative to an "appliance car" beyond anything except looks? I mean, don't get me wrong, that preference has sold plenty of sedans in the past, it's the reason the Jetta exists, etc.
For my personal taste it is absolutly hideous... which is a massive shame because i LOVE the look of the Ioniq5. That's basically all i have to say, the rest is fine. (-70km for larger wheels? Is that normal? O.o)
The Ioniq 6 is much more efficient than the 5 and offers significantly more range. In 15 years the styling will still be cool and probably unique. And you can switch to a new, modern battery pack. Ioniq 6 isn't worthy a fully produced Throttle House video? LOL.
the boot open moment from James cracked me up 🤣
Just wish that fascia were a lot more closer to Prophecy concept.. back end is very nice and the car's most interesting area. Still pick the 5 though.
It looks like a hideously ugly Mercedes-Benz CLS

I hate to agree. I thought they learned their lesson with the new Sonata. Apparently sales are down because of the styling. This is not a pretty car, nor will it be a classic.
