My wife & I love your shows. We love the insights and just fun shenanigans you guys get into. We really enjoyed this show and it caused us to really think about this. Here’s what I picked: daily driver, 2018 BMW X5 - $25K, sports car - pick up a ragged out Miata for $5K and dump another $5K in performance upgrades to make a track car that is a lot of fun to drive. Which leaves $15K for my classic, which would be a BMW 2002. That was a lot of fun. Thanks guys. Cheers!

You had bad luck. Had 06 and 07 LR3 both over 210k and never touched the engines. Just a suspension pump on both around 150k.

My mum had a discovery 3 and a discovery 4 when I was a kid. Both went wrong at the exact time the warranty ran out. Both kept going into limp mode and the air suspension kept going down and getting stuck down.

It is _definitely_ quicker than a 2.7 986. An ND2 is competition for a 3.2 986 S. It doesn't sound nearly as good as either one, of course.

Every time I go back to thinking James is "just" a car nerd, he pulls out this weird (weird is good in this context) mix of film/series/retro-culture/ultra-nerd/meta/science comments and I am impressed by how far his knowledge and details of them goes. Please continue to be this approachable. This charisma paired with modern/retro culture is exactly what we need and drags us back to this channel. I would go miles to just have a beer at a pub with him.

I had a 1973 240Z that had a tired motor, so I installed a fresh short block for a 260Z with a Cannon intake and triple 40DCOE Webers. Most intoxicating intake sound this side of a Ferrari Daytona. It was light and quick and I got a whopping 15mpg! Great memories!

Equus is a great suggestion. I would personally lean toward a 20-25k 08+ LS3 C6 and a cheaper Z32 but these are awesome suggestions.

I'm just hyped the golf spec I own is mentioned in the video! Love the 2016 Golf TSI, have had it for 8 years now and its been there for me from high school all the way till my second professional job now. Just a fun car to push and carve city corners with.

James, you basically nailed it. I have an ‘18 Golf GTI, a Jeep Wrangler TJ, and hope to get a Miata next… this can be done in the $50k budget Wrangler just turned 25 this year, so technically a classic, but have owned it since 2001. The Boxter is tempting though, I browse them as much as Miata’s Really great episode guys!

I just bought a 5th gen Type SH last year. Total beater. $2,700. I drive it to work sometimes. But man, you're talking a _seriously_ nice one for that kind of money.

I live in michigan. I have 3 cars, all paid off. 1. Lexus rx 450h ( best car i have ever owned) 2. Chevy silverado 4x4 with huge new tires. (Incredible in winter) 3. Scion fr-s (funnest car i have ever driven) I am pretty happy.

James, your picks are so funny to me because I not only would pick the exact same things, I pretty much did. I have a 2020 GTI and unfortunately just had to sell my NB Miata when I brought home my baby (congrats on yours too!) my brother and I both bought a CJ8 Scrambler (same thing but with a truck bed, old gladiator basically) to learn stick on when I was in high school. We never had any problems with the old AMC V8 but it was insanely scary to drive above 40 because it steered so poorly. I never knew we were such similar people! Love the lists guys

I promise I’m not obsessed with Porsches. 986 Boxster S - 15k Cayenne S/Turbo - 25k 944 - 10k Owned a 986 S and I don’t think there’s anything better for the money. I love my Macan as a one car solution but if I had the space for multiple the Cayenne makes a great daily.

I drove a 986 S and it made it to my list; it's that good. The Cayenne is the only objectionable choice here but I've never been in one. 944 is an interesting case because it's kind of like a Miata but harder to maintain...practical though. Interesting you can make this happen for 50k!

Completely agree. 986S is the best car I’ve ever driven.

I always love stuff like this. 1. I’d go for a manual 07/08 Acura TL Type S in kinetic blue pearl. 2. I’d need something practical so I’d look for a Pilot, Passport, 4Runner or even a Grand Cherokee. 3. My classic would be a Volvo 850 R. Something that’s fun and quirky.

Had a 2002 MR2 Spyder manual - one of my top three all time favorite cars. I tried to pick three cars I haven't owned, or that would have been an easy pick for a sports car.

LOVED this challenge! It's actually realistic; having $50k and enough space to store 3 cars is not totally unreasonable. Also, that 240 was gorgeous 😍

I love this segment. Real talk for real budgets.

Major props on the 240Z. Owned one of those many moons ago and it was fun with a great gearbox. And 1972 is the year; by 1973 the emissions regs were creating real issues (mine was a 1973). And getting one with no rust is a major coup.

Golf is a smart daily choice. One of our daily cars is a 2019 Alltrack SEL, fully optioned. We bought it in 19 with 6,000 miles on it VW CPO so full coverage warranty for 7 years/84,000 miles for $27,000. We currently have 50k miles on it, clean car, no accidents ect.... Today it is worth 23k-25k.

I had a 2019 Alltrack SEL as well. One of my most favorite cars. Swapped a Golf R turbo in within the first 10,000 miles and kept it until around 135,000 miles. No issues, super fun, great in the snow with snow tires, loved it. Only reason I got rid of it when I did was because a vehicle I placed a preorder on came 2 years sooner than I anticipated.

My first car (bought in 1988) was a 73 240z that has been set up for club racing. Aftermarket aero package and carbs from a Jag XJS. Loved that car! There was a guy in town who was a Datsun expert who kept my carbs in sync (something that was required). I wish I had been in a situation to hold on to it and rebuild it.

For me I think I'd go with actually a similar approach: Daily - VW Golf GTI Mk6 (~10k €) Sports - Porsche Boxster 2.7L 987 (~20k €) Classic - BMW E30 325i (~20k €) Or I'd get a pristine Audi RS4 B7 and have a daily, a "sports" and a (modern) classic, probably some change left to keep that V8 running for a couple of years too (and yeah i know it's cheating to include it in the classic category as a modern classic, but i was in kindergarten when it came out so it's classic enough)

This was great. I love when you guys do videos like this. I'd love to see you do this with the 100k budget you were talking about. I think it would be interesting to see how your choices change.

Yeah, VW Typ 3 1500 ❕👍🏼 Was a little bit roomier as the beetle. Later came the Passat and Golf with front engine and fwd... but in the 60's VW had only rear engine air-cooled car's. Love from Berlin 🇩🇪 Ramsi 🙋🏻‍♂️

Just got a 2010 Porsche 987.2 Boxster for $20k. And already have a 33k mile 2005 CRV as daily for $7k. Left me $23k to restore a VW Bus in the future!

This is what I already have: Daily - '01 Dodge Ram - 2,500 Sports - E39 540i M-Sport - 8k Classic - 1968 Dodge Dart - 22k +/- a few $ for "upgrades" Sagan's "daily" was a VW Type 3 wagon. That 240 came with 2 SU carbs, that '72 has the weber conversion, huge performance upgrade.

I had an e39 540i M sport 6 speed it is a fantastic car. More comfortable than an e46 by far and on the highway they feel like they could just keep accelerating forever. Would 100% snatch one of them in good shape. I currently have an f30 335i 6 speed which has a similar wheel base to the e39

I should have added that it's a V8, not the 6, so it does have a decent amount of oomph. I did some small road trips in it and once you get going, the gas mileage is not bad.

Great choice on the 986. I bought a 2000, S, 6-speed. Purchased it for $8,000 and now is a $15,000 car (not based on appreciation…repairs). But love it…when it is not in the shop.

So much fun! Love it when you try to guess the other's choice.

I’m pretty close to that now: 2012 FJ Cruiser (daily) 2006 Corvette (sports) 1993 Miata (classic)

Daily: 2017 or newer E-Golf - $15k Classic: 1980s BMW 325i sedan - $15k Sports: early 2000 BMW z3 or Z4 - $17k I will keep $3 to rent a car for family roadtrips or a truck if I need to haul something, should be enough budget for 6 years car rental :D

This is awesome. Much more relatable than Doug and Kennan’s completely unaffordable choices for the average car enthusiast.

Doug has become extremely out of touch with reality. He calls the $70k Kia EV9 awd affordable. Last I checked the average new car costs $49k, even that is a ton of money if not making $100k+ (regardless of if the dealership/bank will approve you for more).

​@@jakes5530yea I feel like he's letting out his ego quite a bit. He tends to trash on cars that aren't German brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche. It's honestly annoying to me.

Good list, but man I wish I could find an exige for that cheap over here. There must be more of them on your side of the pond. I looked at them like 5 years ago and couldn't find a decent one in the whole country for less than like $60k. I'm sure it's even worse now.

Lol on the Cayman. They're not the most reliable, but they're surprisingly easy to work on if you want to DIY.

Total shocker to hear the pick on a LR3. Just bought a 2007 myself for 10k CAD and am very pleased with my purchase. A set of new KO2 tires , thorough cleaning, some delayed maintenance and we have a fabulous vehicle that looks practically new inside and out, and drives so comfortably and is very competent in almost any off road situation. Definitely not fast or even remotely sporty but it rides so comfortably with that air suspension. Also picked up an Atoto P8 for about 200 that fits perfectly in the stock navigation screen location, so it even has CarPlay and a rear view camera.

Daily 957 Cayenne 14k, C6 Corvette 25k, 1986 944 Turbo with the rest. Love these videos!

Daily: R129 SL500(M119, the car I actually daily) , purchased it at $7.6k and 85K miles in 2021 Sports: SW20 MR2 (built for time attack) purchased at $7K with peeling clear, and door dings Classic: Jaguar XJ12-C (with a broadspeed replica kit, and haltech EFI) $2-4K with no floorboards. Money spent: $18K on cars Sub-Remaining: $32K Devoting: $10K each to repairs and modifications(time attack r129 and hillclimb SW20?)

Thinking of this was fun! Daily: 2006 Lexus LS430. Sports : Nissan 350z. Classic : 1968 Mercury Cougar. Definitely doable in 50k.

Porsche 928(1980s so like 20k) G37x (awd) under 100k miles and under 13k for daily. And a 2005 Cadillac xlr

This was tough trying to narrow it down, in fact I couldn't, so will have options Daily-2020's Subaru WRX/Hyundai Kona N $25,000 Classic-Mid 70's Dodge Challenger/80's RamCharger in the $10-15k range Sport-2001 Ford Mustang GT Bullitt $10,000 (my current car) But honestly, the Mustang is almost classic in age and to me would satisfy both of those categories so I would have a to change the parameters to Truck, Daily/Winter, Sport/Classic and my current setup is Truck-2018 Ram 2500 $38,000 Daily/Winter-2007 Chrysler Aspen $6,000 Sport/Classic-2001 Ford Mustang GT Bullitt $10,000 putting me slightly over budget. And when the truck is paid off I can upgrade the Daily/Winter to that Subaru or Hyundai
