    Regarding 10:33: "Bigger headlights" in the TR6 versus the TR5? Maybe you learned "the new math", but in the old way I learned mathematics, the 7" round headlights in the TR6 are the same size as the 7" headlights in a TR5. 🤣

  • @fuelupclassic
    @fuelupclassic17 сағат бұрын

    You're quite right, they did use the faithful old 7 inch sealed beam headlights that was fitted to so many cars of the era. A slip of the tongue! I probably meant to say bigger lights in general, as the TR6 incorporates larger indicators and side lights as one complete unit, unlike the TR5.

  • @johnmohanmusic
    @johnmohanmusic18 сағат бұрын

    I don't understand why the U.S. spec cars took such a drastic horsepower hit. Yes, the compression ratio was lowered, but just a bit. And yes, they were outfitted with twin SU Carburetors instead of fuel injection. But my 1972 Datsun 240Z, outfitted with twin Hitachi Carburetors (SU clones) was rated at 150 bhp with an engine that was smaller than that of the TR6 engine. If they had to use Carburetors to meet US emissions (an idea that seems ludicrous to begin with), why not just put bigger carburetors on it?!?!

  • @fuelupclassic
    @fuelupclassic17 сағат бұрын

    It was a strange time regarding US emissions regulations and I think most manufacturers scrambled to get something to work to keep sales going, usually at the significant detriment of power. Thankfully today even a USA spec TR6 can produce quite impressive power figures with a little tweaking.

    Random question, when the XJ40 was introduced in 1987 did it carry anything over from the previous XJ , chassis, IRS etc , always been curious 🤔✌️hope yours is all good btw 👍🏻

  • @fuelupclassic
    @fuelupclassic17 сағат бұрын

    Great question! I believe the answer is very little and certainly no major components. The XJ40 platform took years to develop and went massively over budget. I suppose in the long run it all worked out, as they were still using a revised version of it all the way up to 2003.

    I loved the jaguar except for several things….paint quality was questionable. Clear coat lifted. Back seat room is poor for a large sedan. Interior in general was cheaply built. Mine was a xj8 2001.

  • @fuelupclassic
    @fuelupclassic14 сағат бұрын

    Interesting! I've not heard of paint quality issues on them before - do you happen to live in a hot climate? All XJ models suffer with poor leg room in the back and the only way to get round it is to go for the LWB option on the X300, X308 and X350 models, which makes a big difference.

  • @marinman3551
    @marinman3551Күн бұрын

    Great vid however I disagree with your choice of xj...the x300 is the better car in terms of its much much better Interior in my opinion the 308 is a bad upgrade styling wise with over an over use of the oval. Interior the dash is poor the slab facia is very unambitious, the engine of the x300 AJ16 is the ultimate incarnation of the straight six the V8 was hugely problematic and in no way is as refined as the V12, the 308 indeed is a great car. But less so than the x300

  • @fuelupclassic

    Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it. Styling is of course subjective, but both the X300 and X308 are still great looking cars in my eyes, with the X308 feeling just slightly more advanced in every way. I'm a big fan of the X300 and ran one for several years. They're lovely old things but finding a good solid one these days is getting tricky. I will get one on the channel in the near future, as it will be nice to revisit an old friend.

    You may be thinking of the XJ X350 model, which did indeed come after the X308. I have an X350 and it's a great car but ever so slightly lacks the old world charm of the earlier models.

    @@fuelupclassic Ok. I don't see it that way at all. To me it still had all the charm. The completely new XJ that came around 2010'ish? is actually pretty good looking car too but on that I agree it lost all the charm of the old Jags. But overall I really like how all old Jags look. Mercedes always had the technical edge but Jaguars have much more "soul".

    I own a TitanSilver/black interior 2003 4.4 Sport Pkg X5 with over 230k miles. August '03 production makes it one of the final pre-facelift/M62 V8 engine E53s. The service dept guys at my local BMW dealership (Plano, Texas) told me I held onto the right X5. I run staggered 19" HRE wheels w/ Vredestein Ultrac Vorti R tires in the summer (soft compound) and non-staggered OE 18"s w/ P-Zero all season tires in the winter. Did a 2k mile road trip (Dallas-Atlanta-Dallas) a few weeks ago. Ran flawlessly. Hope to see 250k miles next year.

    I have two 308’s, one a 3.2 sport, the other a Daimler 4.0 n/a that is superb looking. Personally I prefer the looks of the 308’s, the 350’s just look like an x type that’s been stretched slightly whereas the 308’s are a modern version of the original xj’s. Yes they may rot but so do the aluminium ones too although not as drastically. I’m a big fan of the series one and two xj having had several in my time so I’m happy enough driving in my modern equivalent 😊

    This car is clearly a nice example of an early V8 Jag, and I know there are many fans of the X308. Personally, I'm not a fan of the V8 Jags. I like sixes and twelves, unless we're talking a flat-plane crank Ferrari. I like the X300 -- the AJ16 engine is one of the best straight sixes ever -- and the X350 XJ6 petrol. As I currently live in London it would have to be an X350, and of course there are several V8 variants if one prefers. I also think the X351 remains a stunning car. Whenever I see one it looks stylish, current, and special. However, IMO the V6 diesel is the engine to go for if buying an X351, and you'll need a late example to be ULEZ compliant. Overall, I think the X350 XJ6 petrol is a rather compelling package. Three to five grand can get you into quite a good one. Seven to nine grand can get you into a stunning low-mileage example, but that's a lot of money to spend when average examples only fetch two to two-and-a-half. I have to say, I'm also a big fan of the XJ40 -- IMO the styling is very balanced and just works -- and the Series 3 cars, although I think you need to be a true enthusiast to own one and simply must have a garage or carport, otherwise there's no stopping the rust.

  • @fuelupclassic
    @fuelupclassic2 күн бұрын

    Absolutely! The early cars are really only in the hands of enthusiasts now and do require a certain level of upkeep, nonetheless my Series 3 remains one of my favourites. I also have an X350 V6 petrol and it's a great machine. 165,000 miles and it's still going strong and is pretty much used daily. Technically it's better than the X308 in so many ways and can easily be picked up for the same sort of price, so it's easy to see why people may choose one over an X308. Although the air suspension doesn't give the exquisite ride of earlier XJs and they don't quite have the same charm about them. Finding a really good and solid X300 is difficult these days, but they're a wonderful blend of old school Jag and modern(ish) reliability.

    I hope that you also have the correct shift lever, as I've been led to believe they're not interchangeable with the non-ovd 3-sync ones. I'm in the process of restoring a '67 MGB GT; a UK delivery car to a US Serviceman stationed in Germany (where the car remained until 1988). I "acquired" it in 2020, but before I took anything apart__it had sat dormant, outside in Massachusetts since '95, sinking into the earth__I wanted to get it running/driving (and stopping...) etc., and also took a 3-year ordeal to get it properly licensed/registered. Anyway, I DID get it running/driving and was pleasantly surprised that the overdrive not only worked, SO DID THE VACUUM SWITCH! I've had a couple other 3-sync MGB ('66 & '67 rdstrs) that had overdrive, so I recognize the value in the fact that my current GT is VERY COMPLETE, VERY ORIGINAL, and very rusty! I'm retired (from working on BMW M Coupes/M Rdstrs) so what else am I going to do with my time ;)

I have owned C´s for more than 40years and have loved them from day 1. Very well built and - in the best possible way - a bit over engineered and massively strong. The engine is also very robust, very tuneable with the second version of the BMC C series 6 so much smoother than the series 1 that powered the Austin Healey. Great video, thank you.

I cant see how a petrol model would be more economical, and we have no tax on emissions here so thats not a problem. In the UK they are very well supported by a number of specialists, so parts supply is generally not a big issue. It's very hard to say whether a 40+ year old car will be completely reliable as there are so many variables. I would advise buying the best you can afford and having it independently inspected by a specialist beforehand and if you're able to do some work yourself, you will likely save a fortune. General upkeep and overall spend should then be minimal. They're great fun and still a bit of a bargain!

    Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for watching. Wings is what you may call 'fenders' depending on where you are in the world? Whatever you call them (wings, fenders etc..) the CLK or any Mercedes of this era have a bit of a reputation for rust, so it's important to check them regularly. When it comes to wheels, a good pair of AMG Monoblocs (genuine or replica) always suit this era of Mercedes really well in my opinion. I hope you continue to enjoy your CLK for many years a miles to come. Matt
