The Jaguar S-Type: Long Since Overlooked and Forgotten But Now's The Time To Buy This Modern Classic
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The Jaguar S-Type is quite simply one of the cheapest ways to get behind the wheel of a modern classic. In a world where everything seems to be expensive, values of the S-Type remain low, but for how long? Could now be the perfect time to take another look at the luxurious mid-size Jag? Join me as I take this unusual manual transmission, V6, pre-facelift version for a drive and discuss why it could well be a bit of a bargain.

I’ve had a 2005 S-Type 2.7D executive (SE) as my daily driver in Spain for 12 years. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned.

How was the maintenance?

I’ve followed the book. All service work has been done by highly qualified British ex-pat Jaguar specialists. Any issue has been efficiently dealt with. Next on my to-do list is to fix a somewhat drooping (rear) headliner. I wouldn’t own a Jag unless it’s in top condition.

@@stigmoltu-jacobsen 12 years man.. thats a loooooooooooooooooooooong time. the brand makes these cars cheap, but the cars itself are quite good. there are a few xtypes and stypes for sale in my country for 2-3 thousand euros. lol thats cheap!!!! might just get one, currently driving a nissan micra 1.3 from 2000 lol , been driving it for 9 years now. its got aloooooooooooooooooot of rust, to a point where just fixing the rust will run me 2 or 3 thousand euros. might aswell get a jag right? thanks for your post. you still have the car?
I bought my 52,000 mile 2.7 in 2013. Oil change every year, belts changed and gearbox serviced. Definitely a keeper.
I owned an S-type for many years - lovely cars to drive. Very comfortable, will drive along at low speed quite happily and also happy to drive flat out. You have to keep them serviced. Biggest issue is rust, you have to look behind the plastic sill covers and take care of the rust you will find if not careful. I had the auto box which gave problems at 35k miles which ended with a replacement costing £3500. I sold the car 2 years ago and now regret it and am currently looking for another. If you find a good one buy it and take care of it and use it.

Mine is 6-speed 3l 2003 and its a great car. Drives well and everything works as intended..love it.
Bought a one owner very low mileage S Type a few weeks ago with full service history!! Drives as well as some of the top of the range Mercs & Bms I have driven!! I know it sounds like a cliche but YOU REALLY DO GET A LOT OF CAR FOR THE MONEY!! Peace From London. 🙏🙏🙏
Had my 3.0 2004 for 12 yrs now just fantastic & never let me down , like any piece of engineering good maintenance is key
Great video. I owned a '65 S-Type at the end of the 70's, and more recently a few years of daily driving a '96 XK8. Loved them both. Without a Jag at present and still nursing a longstanding hankering to own perhaps a 2005-2007 S-Type.
GREAT VIDEO! Just a few years ago, I managed to find a "cream-puff" 2005 S-Type 3.0 with sunroof and Navigation with only 25,000 one-owner miles. I paid $8,000 and felt like I stole it. Since then, we've got it up to 65,000 miles and it's still cruising like a new car. Could not be happier, and my wife LOVES it! Now I don't feel so guilty for having "my" 2007 XK convertible, and 2002 Vanden Plas.

I bought an 03 S-Type at an auction about a week ago for $1,000. I cannot believe how well this thing handles. I love it. I was going to sell it. It's quiet for a V8, and ive had several offers already. Great car.

Great video. Just started following your channel, mainly because I saw a Insta post about the upcoming S-Type feature! I've had three S-Types, each one a gem. They're very under rated vehicles and I've wanted a facelift 3.0 man for a while now. The perfect addition to my XK.. Keep up the good work!

We have a 3.0 and love it.
My 2007 is great I picked it up for 3k a few years ago 2020 with 79k miles now in 2023 it has 101,000 miles and I do all of my own servicing. It’s fantastic last of the Ford made jaguars the 3.0 engine also came in the Ford ranger just some different specs 👍🏻

I have a 2004 2.7 SE. Lovely car to drive especially on long journeys. 40mpg+ on a run, closer to 30 on shorter runs. Mine has been very reliable although some rust on the wheel arches now which I need to treat. Had a few warning lights initially but changing the battery sorted those out. It's important to have a good battery on these. The S type is a bargain at the moment but they are disappearing fast.
Great review

Bought a V6 S type a week ago, still getting used to it, it seems really nice. Cost just over a grand, full service history and loads of receipts, CDs was still in the caddy and loads of brass band music and a hits of the 60s so it's an old guys car.

I've had a couple of X-types and an XJ6, which I loved, so I thought I'd give one of these a try, I don't like modern cars, they all seem like generic boxes. There is a difference between this on and my old XJ6 and that is I can see out the front past the headliner 😂

I've always really liked the S-type. I like the retro inspired bodywork, and the interior looks stunning. The Ford derived AJV6 is a great engine, it's ridiculously smooth. I have an 02 Jaguar X-type with the 2.1l AJV6 engine, and I think it's great, even with the smallest of the V6 engines and only front wheel drive. I'd love to take an S-type for a spin, especially the 4.2l Supercharged V8 version.

They're great cars and still so underrated. The same can be said about the X-Type too!
Elegant and stylish for modern classic car,
It looks quite nice with the mesh grille - only because it matches the silver paintwork. .... Any other colour it would look terrible - like a Halfords off the shelf part !! .... I'm not sure on the red leather interior to be honest ?
I'm buying this car now here in Germany ✌️

I've had my 3.0 SE for sixten years and wouldn't swap it for anything! Pure luxury inside, (you'd have to trade up to a Bentley to match it), the bodywork still fabulous (silver), and it still goes like a bat out of hell when in sports mode. On motorway cruises I get 40 mpg. Stuff your electric cars: drive something that's got real style!

i think that it was a Ford decision to make the S-Type look retro. As Ford already owned Volvo and Mazda, they hemmed in Jag to the retro British brand. Under Tata, Jag got to style it as they wanted, so it became the XF.
@earlscheib7754
7 ай бұрын
Except the XF came out in 2007 and started development in 2002, Ford didn't sell Jaguar until 2008. The XF still sits on the DEW98 platform, a platform that is 25 years old.
@lewis72

Good point. I was citing a former colleague who was at the design studio. Ford AFAIK had insisted on retro styling for Jaguar. I'm well aware that the XF is a top-hat of the S-Type, which is on the DEW98 platform but there was a clear move away from the retro styling of Jaguar of the X206, X350 and X100.

Absolutely! The diesel version is lovely and suits the car so well. For me when compared to the petrol versions, there's just that bit too much to potentially go wrong with a 2.7 diesel as they age/ the mileage creeps up.
I'm going to swap my Volkswagen Jetta 2011 that has ran 111,000 miles for a Jaguar S-Type from 2001 which has run only 49,000 in a few days. Hopefully I am making the right choice!

In the US these were plagued with timing chain and transmission problems
@fuelupclassic
7 ай бұрын
The early 4.0 V8 versions did have issues with timing chain tensioners. The design I believe was updated for the 4.2 variants, and is thus far less prone to issues. Gearbox issues are often related to the 'sealed for life' claim Jaguar (and many other manufacturers) made at the time. Specialists recommend a gearbox oil and filter change every 60,000 miles or so to keep things working properly.

Excellent choice!
The S type is such a classic design. Totally distinctive. When you see one on the road it stands out among the sea of boring plain sedans . As a designer you want something that is unique. As for the F type it looks, it looks like a crap Japanese non descript car from early 2000 The F type jag, has lost its visual identity look and heritage. I should know I created the ads for Lexus and jaguar and GM in the late 90’s and 2000’s What followed Jaguar was mechanical issues. If they where more reliable like Honda the car would’ve sold millions. I ‘ve owned a jag a 2001 and had repair issues. That is what destroyed the British car industry. Build a better more reliable car and you’d still have a car industry ThXs for video

Good to hear! Incredibly underrated in my view.
0:02 shifts smoothly, which should be the case in such a car.The S-Type is a fantastic car with sufficient power. I paid over £5500 for it but for a good version they start from 2003. the older versions have problems. From £1500 and £3500 you are asking for problems and you will ultimately spend much more on expensive repairs. The money is definitely worth it. because what good is a newer BMW or a Mercedes that costs at least £80 - 90,000 that doesn't drive better than the Jag. Moreover, the S-Type is a real young timer that is reminiscent of the MkII and the older S-Type will certainly increase in value. My advice is better to pay more otherwise you will buy a lot of misery..
