Is The Jaguar S-Type Retro Rubbish or Old School Cool? (1999 3.0 V6 Road Test)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Jaguar had long harbored hopes of competing with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class. In 1999, the retro-styled S-Type was that car, but today it's an often-derided relic of the retro styling era. Is it deserving of such a fate, or a hidden gem? Phil decided to find out!

After previously owning a Mk2 Daimler 2.5 V8 in the 70’s I purchased a 2001 3.0L SE in Topaz gold with contrasting interior, just 9 months old and have the car to this very day. With around 110,000 miles the car is still a headturner with classic lines and the usual Jaguar refinements. The ride is quiet and smooth. The retro design captures completely elements of earlier Jaguar designs and this marque is already an upcoming classic. Without a doubt it retains the affection I had since the day I first bought it. Long live the retro S Type in whatever year model….❤

I had two of these the first was a 4litre V8 and the second was a 2.6 diesel. I loved their feline shape rather than the more butch designs of the Germans. The interior on the second one was better than the V8 they were comfortable with a good ride and excelled on long distance drives both were trouble free too.

I have my second S Type, this one is a 3.0Ltr Sport '55 reg' and I love it. Its comfortable, easy to drive and can put a shift on when needed. I had an 3.0 SE 'Y' reg' before and the only thing that let it down was the interior, as you said' it was rubbish. All said though, they both ate the miles, the SE was more comfortable over the bumps than the Sport but the Sport has better seats and is quieter inside (no sunroof) than the SE. I am just considering spending a few quid on the paintwork, with the hope of keeping it going for a few more years.

I had two of them both s type r loved them both smooth powerful and excellent mile munchers. Only ever needed routine maintenance and tyres. Changed to an xfr which is absolutely brilliant much nicer on the eye than german rivals and as quick as or better than most. Just a few things that the s had that was nicer, folding boot floor, and key fob seat memory. Still have fond memories of the s though. The s retro styling was a hark back to jaguars of old and set them apart and just oozed class. There are but two types of motor car the jaguar and the rest.

My Dad bought a new 3.0 SE in 2001 identical to the one in the video because when he was younger he promised himself he’d have a Mk2. He kept it until 2012 when it ultimately fell to bits & had to be scrapped after he spent thousands keeping it going. The auto box gave problems, the diff needed replaced, new torque converter, electrical issues etc etc & rust, a lot of rust! To be fair he did do 160000 miles in it. In comparison in 2004 I had a 2001 BMW E39 530i msport & there wasn’t a single department the S type competed with it. Interior space, size of the boot & build quality was all superior in the BMW & the V6 engine was ok but no match for the BMW straight six in terms of engine noise & refinement. The Jags steering was also to light & lifeless as I remember. However all that said my old man would never have swapped it because ultimately he loved the retro styling & it was his “modern” mk2.

I have owned a 2007 S Type 2.7 for nearly eight years now. Comfortable, quiet, economical (51 mpg on motorways, 43 mpg over 1600 miles mixed driving) and definitely a keeper. Got the rusty sills and subframes sorted, oil changed every year, regular easy use and it has proven to be reliable. The Sea Frost colour, in my opinion, is the one best suited to the car. Still underrated- but you do need to find a good one.

@@carlhoward9216 Hello Carl. I caught the rust before it did any real damage. I used a flap disc to get to bare metal, etch primed and then used thick underseal. I used an air line to clean inside the sill (there was a lot of grit) before spraying underseal. The plastic undertrays also need to taken off. The job is not too difficult. If the sills are rotten then it is more difficult. I have used a welder on my other project car. If I were to replace the Jaguar sills I would think about removing the seats and carpet to minimise risk of damage. Hope this helps.

I had a 2001 with the 4.0 Liter. I actually loved the styling, inside and out. The part of that car I hated was the Ford-sourced 5 speed auto gearbox. It was absolute rubbish. Ford put variants of that transmission in the LS, Thunderbird, Mustang, Explorer...just about everything they wanted to put a longitudinally mounted 5 speed auto in. And they had trouble out of every variant. in 2003 Jaguar replaced the Ford 5 speed with a ZF 6HP 6 speed auto, which was much more reliable. If you're going to get an S-Type, the newer cars with the 6 speed are excellent cars. The transmission on my 2001 went out with 130,000 miles on it, shortly after I bought it. I replaced the transmission with a remanufactured unit, and just for kicks, I tore the old one down. The gasket from the front pump was made from a 2008 New Orleans phone book. So at 130,000 miles, it had needed major transmission work twice. Apparantly, the first rebuild was a bit sketchy. But when she was running, oh was she a dream to drive. Everything I wanted in a car. V8, RWD, 4 wheel disk brakes, independent rear suspension, dual exhaust, all the muscle car goodies stuffed into a luxury sedan body. And call me a weirdo, but I like the retro styling. After I put the new transmission in mine, I ended up selling it, but I missed it so bad I started looking for another Jag. Now I'm driving a 2009 XJ8L with the 4.2L and 6HP transmission shared with the newer S-Types, and it is my favorite car I've ever owned. If you avoid the older ones with the Ford built 5 speed, you really can't go wrong with an S-Type. You can snag one for cheap. Do it and don't look back.

I like the bodylines of the S , the silhouet so to say . But what I dearly miss is the chroom that Rover did so well on the 75 . Also the seats in the Rover have that classic style and are very comfy . The modern traffic in the Netherlands with loads of trucks and speedbumps make a big engine obsolete . So I went for the Rover 75 1.8 Connoseur and didn't regret it a single second ! Yes there is some cheap fabric on the doorcards witch I changed with leather ,and I had the alloys restored , but man , what a comfy piece of stylish kit and reliable beyond expectation .

Make peace with the styling. What peace? The designe is simply timeless. My friends bought BMW and Mercedes and they all recognise this today. The drive and the confort - you need to drive one to really know. My 2006 2.7 Diesel now has 165,000 miles and it still pulls and accellerates, strangely, better like new. On the road, pulling power is what mayyers - The Jaguar S-Type 4.2 V8 has a maximum torque of 303 lb-ft. The 2.7 diesel 320 !!!! The 2.7 diesel pulls like a dream. I could have bought the petrol - but after a est drive - it was too obvious which one I wanted. And now the more time passes, the more timeless it becomes. Moreover they are extremely confortable and so easy and predictable if you drive around corners really hard. Needless to say, you need to stick to the recommended maintenance and replace oils and filters and all consumable items ON TIME when you are dealig with high power engines. Not any 5/40 oil is good enough. You need to stick to the recommended oils - and premium diesel - both of which are specially formulated for high power diesels. These are simply truely drivers cars.

I borrowed one of those for a weekend and despite being a Jag fan I didn’t like it at all. It was an early 3.0l SE. I just couldn’t find anything it did well. The seats are not comfortable, the ride isn’t that good, plus that 3.0 didn’t seem to work in such a heavy car, it lacks torque so making decent progress is difficult, you have to Rev it out, but when you do that it’s just too thirsty for what you get. Maybe it would make more sense with the V8 in it but the 3.0 SE I found to be no-where near a match for a w210 E-class.

I’m a Jaguar Junkie, and will always be. I’m one of the minority who actually appreciates the S-Type’s styling, and I think it has aged better than it’s competitors (save perhaps the Rover 75?). The Audis of the period to my eye were bland as a cardboard box, the BMWs backend didn’t work for me, and while the E-Class is always a great machine, the rust that those era cars (and the build quality of that era Mercedes) just ruined the experience for me. The S-Type interior, I think, let it down from the beginning, because it was too “Ford”, not “Jaguarish” enough. However, after the interior redesign, that was rectified. Of all those cars in its class, a V8 S-Type in N/A or Supercharged form is probably the one I’d take - it’s definitely an old car, we know, but it’s got a timelessness to it. From a distance, it could be a 50s car, it could be a 2020s car (Bentley still employs a similar passing resemblance in the Continental to this day). By comparison, the German and even Japanese equivalents look very much “of the era” they are from. The S-Type is a very classy machine that looks at home everywhere. And to be fair? The drive is spot on. But the video, at the end of the day makes a fair point…why buy an S-Type, when for ballpark money, you could buy an XJ? At the end of the day, the XJ is the king, tied perhaps with the XK and F-Type equivalents. But the S-Type and the XF descendants do TRULY deserve more recognition. They are fantastically underrated cars, and for the discerning connoisseur, nothing else is better then a Jaaaaag. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to put this oil painting and silverware into the trunk. Would you mind awfully settling this, whilst I go warm up the Jaaaaaag?

Spot on! I always thought the German equivalents were painfully bland. The s type looked like nothing else on the roads and still turns heads today. My BRG 2004 s type gets a lot of attention from people who think it costs way more than it actually does. The s types competition has not aged as gracefully and it's ironic that today they just look like old cars while the s type is something special.

I couldn’t agree more - I think the old stereotype holds true - Jaguars always come into their looks. It happened with the E-Type - Sir William wasn’t a fan, yet it became a phenomenon. Later, it happened again with the XJS. I think now we’re seeing the rebirth of the S-Type particularly with the N/A and Supercharged V8s. I cast no shade on the lesser model engines, but those big engines will be future classics to be sure.

The X202 was pretty much directly carried over to the XF, and was a remarkable improvement in handling, engines, gearboxes, steering and interior over the X200. The car in this video is the X200.

The facelifted versions look better, but any time I see an S-Type I have to figure out if it's a Kia or a Jaguar because Kia has a model that looks very similar. I actually like the X-Type better, and of course it's tough to beat the XJ, especially the very last version they produced which I think look fantastic. I like the platform it's built on, but it just doesn't really look right from any angle. It's got a curve to it that runs the entire length of the car that just doesn't seem to work. Put it up against an E39 of similar vintage and spec and it's not even close from any perspective. I'm an American who loves Jaguar (going to look at a 1991 XJ-S today, what a beautiful car) but this one just falls flat. Upside-you can find very clean, lower mileage examples for not much and get quite a bit of car for the momey. You'll pay twice as much for a 530 or 525 or three to four times for a 540i, which will probably have higher miles.

It is a posh Mondeo. Jag key fob, Ford key. Uncomfortable front seats.Based on the Ford DEW platform shared with the Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird. Also used the Ford V6 Duratec engines and Ford auto box. Early models had gremlin prone AC and rear control arm bushes which disintegrated and you cannot buy the bushes separately....... I had a 51 plate 2.6 V6 auto. Fell out of love with it in 6 weeks and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Bought VW Passat instead. Still impressed with it.

I have a 99 XK8 and the biggest thing I still dont like is the steering wheel and the shoddy wood selection, same on this S Type. The front suspension on both cars is cheaply designed, not made, and upgrades with newer parts makes a big difference in ride and reliability.

I have a 4.0 from '99. It's not for sale. Geoff Lawson got it right. Ian Callum messed it up. 4.0 LHD expansion tank is obsolete. It's the weakest point. Battery condition is critical on early models. Never spend your whole budget on buying the car.

I bought mine as the mondeo ST v6 I wanted had been sold. I'll be honest and say I've never liked the retro look of the s type. All that said it has been very reliable and drives very nicely. It's thirsty certainly. Niggles? The coolant system, can't stop it leaking! Electronic park brake sticks on, which is annoying. Good car? yeah if you like the styling, go for it.... got an f type now :)

@Zs B The S Type is not a Jaguar. It is a Ford parts bin car. My Passat is comfortable, economical and trouble free and it is in the same segment as the S type. After 5 years the S type depreciated by 50-55%, my Passat depreciated by 48-50%. The Passat does not pretend to be something it is not.

Never been a fan of "retro styling" in anything, cars are no different. Develop your own style, the older generation will scoff or look at it with disgust: that is how it is supposed to be. Very decent car, perhaps a bit Fordy for executive snobs, but I don't care about such things. I can't get past the styling though, I would always look at it and think "marketing gimmick" rather than "lovely lines". Now excuse me while I slap some Brylcreem in my hair and splash on the great smell of Brut for my hot date tonight...ha ha, only joking, Hai Karate is my favoured brand...

I was fortunate to be invited to the Jaguar Australia unveiling of the S-Type in Sydney. It was a typically flash event with Shirley Bassey doing her History Repeating thing via satellite hookup. When the covers came off there was an audible groan around the room and then a stunned silence. No one clapped for what seemed like an eternity. It was all a bit embarrassing.

S Type are garbage like X type ... They are Ford Mondeo with a jaguar body . Old XJ are better first serie to X 308 . But of course it's up to me . On the other hand, it can allow you to have an affordable Jaguar both for purchase and for maintenance... And more with X type because she's looks like a Little XJ from exterior ; but that stop there . No ; because maintaining an XJ is still an exorbitant price, especially if you drive it a lot.
