I had a red 3 door 1800 Zetec and absolutely loved it, it was such a revelation at the time.

I have owned 3 MK1 focuses, 2 1.6’s and a 1.8 and they were great. The ST170 got average reviews by owners and forums, it also didn’t help that it was in the shadows of the RS from the start and the EP3 civic blew it always. Prices are still at the bottom and it seems demand isn’t there. If the standard focuses were great to drive, I am sure these are with a little bit more power to boot.

As good as the Focus was, I have difficulty in labelling a car from 2002 as a classic. Until recently I would have argued that any car post 1960's could not be labelled as such. I'm only just coming round to the fact that some cars from the 1980's might be 'classics' (Mk1 Golf GTI, 205 GTi and Sierra Cosworth for example). I don't know. Maybe Im just getting too old!

Great video. Although I disagree that R107 prices continue to go up. They seemed to reach a peak somewhere around Covid time and you never see them now at the asking prices of those times (SL Shop aside, but rightly so!)

Nice car, even if rust bucket. As for the Contour (US twin of the Mondeo) - not very successful car because of limited interior volume, bland looks, high price and unskilled UAW workers.

I have restored many older Mercedes. It depends what your criteria for ‘Best’ is but the W201 190 Series (not seen in this video) makes the strongest case for it, IMHO! The W124 is actually the ‘son’ of the W201…not the other way round, as many people seem to think. A W124 is, in many ways, just a bigger and roomier W201. I have had many W201s and W124s. Mercedes invested an absolute fortune into the development of the W201 and when you get to know these cars intimately well, by working on them, you see how they are true masterpieces of design and engineering! Their design and engineerings cues are also present in arguably the ‘best’ SL - the R129. Going back to the 190, you only have to search videos of far flung places with the harshest environments like Mauritania or Western Sahara and see how many out of the total numbers of cars on the road are W201s ! They may be battered and not look pretty anymore….but they’re still going! 😅. That’s because they made with few faults and those that are common are either easily fixable or just cosmetic and don’t matter. I don’t have one at present…in fact, the only Mercedes I have now is a R230 SL…but for me the W201 is the high-point. I’d go so far as to say that as a mass-produced car, no car has ever equalled it! (I don’t classify the Toyota Hilux as a ‘car’. It’s a pickup truck or a mobile heavy machine-gun mount 😅)

I could not choose between the W123 & W124 so yes it would be great to see a comparison video. I was pleasantly surprised that you did not slate the W210 being an owner of both an E320 and an E55 wagon. They were bought cheap on a bangernomics basis but and are still going strong after 12 years and 8 years respectively of ownership.

Oi, did y'all forget the W116? I've had both a W116 and E210 and luckily with the latter never had rust issues. And I'm in Germany! But both are Autobahn cruisers bar none. Sure, not as fast as some Porsches but that's not the point. That is to get from A to B comfortably, safely and in a manner where after getting out of the car after having been behind the wheel for several hours one doesn't feel completely drained due to the energy required to drive the car...

“Short wheelbase”: When I owned my first Caterham I was racing a Metro. I built a little garage to keep the Metro in, and used to swap them to work on either one in my Dad’s workshop. What was unbelievable was that the Metro fitted with just two inches to spare (by design), and the Caterham left enough room for a stack of tyres behind it! That’s how short they are. They don’t look small because the proportions make you think of larger cars like Morgans. They’re probably the easiest car to slide around though, I must say, as they telegraph everything and are very progressive and forgiving. This is if they’re set up correctly…. I briefly raced one that had a terrible setup and it was an absolute pig to drive. My road going one was absolutely gorgeous though. The finest changes can make big differences.

I had several w123s which i really liked except for the first series, mine rusted through within three years. I have only had one A124 which i bought in 1993, I have never seen anything I want to swap it for so still got it. The biggest repair was hydraulic cyclinders for the roof at 2200 after 30 years, otherwise most years there is nothing outside routine maintenance. However I would be tied between the W126 (which you didn't cover at all) and W124 series as Mercedes' peak.

Ridiculous. To be without your car 4 days over a puncture. I'm not against the idea of electric cars but...... I need something that's reliable, I can fill up in two minutes and drive anywhere without fear of no charging points. Also the initial outlay for one is quite expensive. My friends Tesla got damaged by a van. He's going to be without it for three months at the very least. As I said I'm not against Electric cars but for people with busy, demanding lives, they're not as practical as a 'get in and drive car's.

That is what the uk got as a face lift in 74 I had 71 2.0 l L with the slopping dash. My second car in 1977 cost £800 . Iffy water temp controlled auto choke , sea sickness inducing rear seat ride but other than that great car never let me down even when it swallowed one of the spark plug electrodes . Kept it 6 years but rust ate the wings so I sol it on.
