Warning To Classic Car Owners: A Frustrating/Surprising Fix For My 1966 MGB GT & Project Updates!

For those of you that have followed the Fuel Up Classic projects, my rather ropey 1966 MGB GT has proven to be quite the hit. In this video, I take my MGB out for a drive for the first time on the channel and talk about how a bad batch of E5 unleaded fuel was causing almost all of the previous running issues. After a lot of frustration and head scratching, I finally managed to get the plucky B series engine to run properly!
It's truly great to finally be able to enjoy this classic British icon on some of my favourite roads and take you all along for the journey. The big question is: what to do next?
There's also a quick recap on some of the other classic car projects that I've featured so far on the Fuel Up Classic channel - with some great 'highs', such as the Jaguar XJ I bought for just £500 to the 'lows' of my Land Rover Discovery 300tdi that's certainly looking a little worse for wear.

    I put a new rad and petrol tank on mine worthwhile investment for a 73 GT since both were on the way out. Check the tank for leaks and rust in the fuel lines is going to cause trouble eventually

    I had exactly the same problem, also from a BP garage. I did try and get compensation from BP but they said they had no other complaints. I had to have the tank drained. Cost me a lot of money. Never going to use BP again.

    I noticed looking down where the bonnet meets the grill the lines here are almost perfect. I've had 4 MGB/GTs and the lines were lousy due to inferior parts and lousy bodywork. In my opinion, this one is definitely a keeper, although it depends on the rust underneath. A beautiful car overall. Enjoy!

    I have to agree that a badly restored example using inferior parts always make them look a bit 'odd'. There seems to be a lot of support for keeping this MGB GT, which has surprised me. Thank you for watching.

    I had two of these. A 67 red GT and a 72 white GT. The early one was much the better car. It is also devoid of one of those awful webasto roofs. So common on BGTs. You are lucky the panelwork looks pretty original and straight. I would definitely keep it. Sort it really well mechanically and then address bodywork jobs as and when i.e. the boot lid. Keep It.

    Absolutely! That's going to be the plan - overhaul the mechanical side of things and just use it and enjoy it. The bodywork can be done at a later stage. Thank you for watching.

    I love the classics I'd rather drive an old car that I can work on it myself than a new one where not even techs do not want to touch.

    Good video. Only use good fuel from a proper garage i only use Shell + and it makes a big difference

    The Jag is beautiful, shame about the Discovery. If it was me, I'd pull the trigger on the Discovery and send her to the big farm up north and put the money into a rolling resto on the MG B, ...I am biased, tho. I've a B GT myself 😁😂

    Thank you for watching :) I'm hoping we can get the Jag up to scratch and I will do an update on it very soon. There seems to be a lot of support for the MG, so perhaps a good mechanical overhaul and then do something fun with it. The Discovery.... well that remains to be seen but it isn't looking good! I've never seen so much rust!!!

    @@fuelupclassic I know the feeling tho, It's hard to let go of a project car and admit defeat 😄 I've a rusty MOT failure MX5 sitting there going on 2 years which I know is more cost effective to just scrap. But I'm good at making bad financial decisions, considering sending it off for metalwork, so I'm not good at talking my own advice 🤣 I'm enjoying the MG tho, so underrated, just gets more fun the more I drive it.

    Did you take the dodgy fuel issue up with garage ? I think you should do more with the MGB by the way.

    I didn't and I really wish I had but several weeks had passed before I realised it was the fuel that was causing the issue and of course, i'd lost the receipt etc by then too! Thank you for watching

    As the owner of a 67 MGB/GT I encourage you to keep working on your car. I am sure you can do all kinds of good while still keeping the budget in mind. Generally tidying up and maintenance, that sort of thing.

    Bad fuel is not so common, but it has happen too me once. The MGB GT early car is always worth saving go for it with a repair for an every day useable car and not just a show car, should do the trick at a good price?? Good luck Bob

    Not a fan of the cover sills, go over the underneath plenty of preservatives of you choice, weld whats needed keep the B.

    Thank you for watching :) No cover sills are fitted on this one, although the sills are painted black, so it may look like it has got them? It originally came with chrome cover sills but I took them off straight away, as i'm really not a fan.

    Sounds to me that the BP fuel has absorbed water which ethanol dissolved in water so would not be visible. Have it tested?

    Quite possibly! It certainly caused a number of running issues. Unfortunately I disposed of the fuel once I drained the tank, so didn't test it for water.

    @@fuelupclassic You really need to enjoy turning your own wrenches to be right for an MG The carbs being out of sync, hydrauluc clutch issues and ignition troubles were the main issues. It was a beautiful 1968 Mineral Blue GT. I loved it because i was 7 to 11 when he had it. Dad is 83 now

    What to do with the car? Just drive it, and enjoy it. Or... restore it with the understanding you'll likely never recoup your total investment if you ever resell it. Safety Fast!
