Very nice MG that is, you've done well on it. My aunt has a late model B Roadster on a T plate, she's had it for over 30 years now, and its an ongoing thing as you know, every year, something wants doing, or something's stopped working, or it needs a "tuneup", she's had that car in and out of the MG repairing garage over the years, but thats all the joys of owning an old car. I do remember hers always seemed to smell of petrol as she keeps it in the garage, and you may be right about the smells coming from the fuel tank, as these didnt have sealed systems with EVAP canisters and purge valves like modern cars do, so hot weather often meant fumes from the fuel tank would escape and make the car smell. There was an instance she did have where unknown to her for a while, the carb was slightly leaking I think due to the needle valve not quite sealing and causing the bowl to overflow, and that was causing a strong petrol smell and giving a rough idle, but as you've had your carbs to bits and given them a good going over, I doubt yours will be doing that, but I'm sure you'll find the issue of the rich running at idle though.

You should also try an MGC (straight 6 engine) if you can. When I lived in UK I had a tuned MGC with three 2inch SUs (the factory cars had only two SUs), ported and polished big valve head etc it went like the clappers and sounded glorious. Later I owned an MGB GT that had been converted from a 4-cylinder to a Rover V8 by a very talented engineer and ex RAF jet pilot in Suffolk, he'd owned the car for 27 years when I got it - it was a wolf in sheeps clothing. Now back in OZ I've a 67 GT with a mild cam, close ratio gearbox, she's a real peach - and the best bit is I owned this very car in the 1980s before selling it 36 years ago. I found her by chance 4 sale online 2 weeks back - she has come full circle and is back home.

Lovely car, and glad you're getting it sorted. Wouldn't want to sit in the back though.

I had a Morris breakdown. It started eventually. When I got back to base I took it to bits and found rust in the filter and small rust in the float chamber. It was only happening when I drove which we think was because I used a lot of choke for the first few minutes of my trips. So a combination of choke and dirty petrol caused it conk out and then it wouldn’t start again until id turned the engine over for a few minutes because it was flooded. It’s a new petrol tank, new lines, new filter, and new float chamber. So the rust must have been in the petrol we think, or it is rusting at lightning speed. The local police pulled in behind me and pushed the car off the roundabout with my dog barking at them the whole time, lol.

I did laugh at the fuel pipe bit but not due to the filming, I would have routed it from the top, far easier. The GT is a good handling car, far better than the roadster (stiffer shell) and the B series is a good torquey engine which makes for a good drive, I drove loads of MGB's, MGA's and midget as a youth in a Classic car garage.

I Attached the pipe to the pump first... if id engaged the brain, id have routed it first! I must say I'm enjoying driving it rather a lot!

@@badgerlodgegarage Haha! I only laughed because who hasn't done a job butt first and knowing what your trade is I'm certainly not going to try and teach you to suck eggs!! The GT is a lovely car, the rubber bumper not so much, when they did the change they also increased the ride height which knackered the handling somewhat with the increased bumper weight.
