High-Mileage Heroes | How A Tried & Tested Classic Car Might ACTUALLY Be A Better Buy!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Does mileage really matter? For many, it's one of the first things they look out for when buying a classic car. However, if you're willing to consider something that's clocked up bigger miles, you could end up with a great car for a fraction of the price compared to a low-mileage example.
Here's a trio of high-mileage classics to highlight why we don't need to be scared of cars that have been well-used, but crucially, well-maintained.

There are three things to consider when buying a classic car. Firstly the car itself, then the history of the car and finally the attitude of the current owner. Thats why I much prefer to buy cars from the actually owner and not from a trader.

Very concise and informative as usual, I totally agree with the points you make and have a few cars in my little collection to back that up, keep up the good work presenting in such a polite manner that doesn’t irritate or annoy like some others I could mention 👍🏼

I have a couple of classics, one is a 76 Allegro Vanden Plas. A car hated by anyone and everyone, but..... it's the most reliable classic car I've ever owned. 81,800 miles so far and it starts runs and drives exactly how it should. It's not rusty, it has a 5 speed box, cruises at 65-70mph, and I use it all the time in all weathers. It has a massive service history and I look after it as well as I do any car I've owned. 81,800 is hardly high miles but on an "unreliable" BL car I think it's doing well. I put up to 1,000 miles a month on it so it will soon be 100,000 plus miles. I do have a modern car, (Audi A5) but I prefer driving the VP.

That is great to hear you're using it as much as possible and getting so much enjoyment from it. A well-maintained and regularly used classic is far better than one that is hardly used in my opinion. My grandparents had a Vanden Plas back when they were new and I have to admit I have a soft spot for them. Perhaps we will feature one on the channel in the future. Happy motoring.

i think buying old low mileage cars makes only sense if the car ends in a museum not being moved again. if you want to use the car then a high mileage and well maintained car is the much better choice

I just purchased a high mileage Jaguar XK8. I tested lower miles versions, but they were twice the price and not as nice. I figured that I could put another eight thousand into it and have a very nice car. I’m half way there putting $4500 the very week I purchased it. But since they don’t make this model that I love, anymore and it cost the equivalent of $125,000 new. So I don’t mind putting ten k or more into it. I’ve owned two prior XJ6s that I loved and my father bought an XKE new in 1967. So I too am a Jaguar aficionado.

Best of luck with your XK8 and i'm sure you will have a fantastic car at the end of the process. Also, I will be featuring an early XK8 on the channel very soon which you may find interesting.

A good maintenance regime is more important than a cars high milage. A well maintained high milage car demonstrates that the car has been used and taken care of. Not using a car and wheeling it out once per month to polish and stare at it is not a good idea. People to get to hung up on milages I believe and I have always believed that.

All valid points, but be mindful of the deleterious effects of repeated exposure to rain & road salt if a car has been used all year round. That's what really kills cars.

I drive my classic all year round but I've used Lanoguard all over it. It was rust proofed when new in 1976 and the Lanoguard helps a lot. I squirt it everywhere I can and so far my old British Leyland "All Aggro" isn't rusty and is very reliable. I change the oil and filter every 3-5,000 miles and it has two folders full of history from its previous two owners so I like to give it all the love I can. Free tax, £70 insurance fully comp and MOT exempt (I do MOT it though, usually goes straight through.) The heater isn't up to modern standards but we managed back in the day, so I can manage now :)

It's a very tricky situation to navigate and I really do feel for those that live in the affected areas that still want to enjoy their classics.
