Is My Cheap Land Rover Discovery Worth Saving... And Is An Overland Project The Best Way To Do It?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Purchased on a whim last year for just £1,500, my faithful Land Rover Discovery 300tdi has been a surprisingly great vehicle. However, after 25 years and 183,000 miles, this old Discovery is in need of some TLC, which if not rectified will mean it's soon destined for the scrapheap.
MoT day highlighted that corrosion is really starting to set in, along with a host of other issues that need to be addressed.
I'm not prepared to let another old Discovery die, so join me as I discuss
my plans to save this modern classic, and share my plans to turn it into a budget overland vehicle. It may be the first project car on the channel, but it certainly won't be the last.
A big thank you to @discovery_300_camper on Instagram for supplying me with their amazing Discovery 1 camper set up. You can also follow their incredible Land Rover build on their Instagram page.
Thank you to @landtrekker6445 for supplying and quickly delivering the roof tent (although it hasn't even been out the box yet).
Please comment with any of your stories, overland projects, Land Rover restorations and more - it would be great to see as many as possible and help inspire myself and others with their overland project builds and restorations.
Follow the Fuel Up Classic Channel to make sure you don't miss out on any of the Discovery Restoration updates, as well as regular classic car reviews, buying guides, and more.

More updates on the way! Let's just say I have discovered much much more rust than we ever thought possible. I will film an update as soon as possible.

I have a D1 overland build. It was a basket case when I got it. Love mine but I’ve never got 65 out of it! Enjoy the build.

You're right! It makes no financial sense whatsoever but you know how addictive these old Land Rovers can be.

Hey Matt, I enjoy following your reviews and hearing about your Discovery. I use 300tdi Discovery's for my tourism business in Australia. I have upgraded the axles and diffs but run the original size tyres. I had my roof top tent ( mounted to roof bars that connected to the roof gutter ) on one of them but found I needed a short flat rood rack for the 2nd spare wheel and extra jerry cans of fuel. My 98 300tdi Discovery has over 400,000 km ( 248,548 miles ) and will soon be crossing the Simpson Desert. Good luck with the build! I would love to see it!

I have always preferred the Range Rover P38 over the defender - I have had my P38 for nearly 20 years, it was around 5 year old when I bought it also an R registered car. It too now needs some structural work, so hopefully a project for this summer….but good luck always encourage anyone to save an old car rather than todays disposable culture 😊👍

Thank you. A good P38 is still a great vehicle and far more refined than any Defender. I owned one many years ago, and would definitely have another. Hope your project goes well and you get many more years of use from it.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, I bought mine 10 years ago and it’s still going strong and really has become a part of the family, I’ve covered 90,000 miles in it mostly in the Uk but I take it down to Greece every year and it’s never let me down, if they are looked after they just keep going, like your one mine is also on 183,000 miles but I know it’s got years of life left in it, it’s pretty solid and mechanically spot on so I won’t be parting with it, I think that if I ever did try to sell it my wife would kill me. Good luck with yours, I have just subscribed so I’m eagerly awaiting the next video.
