You did such an incredible job with this video, thank you!
Hello! I want to buy a double sided wetstone to keep my knives sharp for carving. My options are 1000/3000 and 1000/6000 wich one should I get? Also is this enough for casual carving? Thank you!
Customing sak
Good Day Tom thank you so much for sharing the safe and proper handling of the carving Axe . It is an excellent resource for me as a new carver. You instructions are important resource for me to highly respect my carving tool(s) blessings ❤
Well... I can see that I'm not the only one who idolizes Adam Hawker. 👍👍
Where do you get 3000grit sandpaper? I've got 1200 but thats the highest our agricultural co-op stocks.
that axe looks like the ideal shape that i've been dreaming of for a carving axe. can you share where you got it/ who makes it?
Most people will have the cheaper hook knives with flat blades. So the tutorial is kind of hard to adept for beginners.
Do you prefer simmetrical or asimmetrical bevels? I'm looking for a carving ax and I read conflicting opinions on this. Thank you.
Thank you. This is the only video I could find giving this information. Even saying “it’s not important” is good information for people that don’t know.
So helpful
Damnit boyyyy that freakin mirrored edge is a tell tale sign, that thing would filet you open with no effort whatsoever…
Amazingly simple! Thanks so much. Do you have any information on your sharpening system? I couldn't catch the name of it.
Sure :) send me an email and I’ll reply With the info [email protected]
interested in your kit. I am in Canada, Quebec....do you need more info?
Sure, send me an email and I’ll reply with the price list :) [email protected]
why only to back side, why dont you show the pressure of appliying it on sharp front side
Video shows passes on both sides of the blade.
Fantastic👍
Thank you. I’ve just taken up whittling and I’m finding you need to strop ever so often. This helps. ✌🏻🤍
Do you have any templates for the knives or is it a secret 🤫😂
My kit arrives soon from you. Hopefully I can get these results 🎉🎉
How astonishing! How detailed! I've watched SO MANY axing videos and never noticed the detail.
You're waisting the paper! Can be used multiple times before it's not useful!
There are SO many videos saying "go get an axe and start making spoons" - with some sketchy axe-swinging examples. This is a clean, clear description of how the axe SHOULD be used - thank you. I'm still at the knife, hook, and bandsaw phase. Maybe next year I'll think about starting up with the axe... (a big investment in $ and space and time to learn properly!)
Oh wait! You're using a funny standard of paper grit. What's 1500, 3000 and 7000 in UK P____ terms. Ie p2500 is the finest really
Do you need to do that curve motion is the knife edge is straight? So you start with 1200, then 3000, then 7000, all around 10 to 15 times each, then the leather strop like 30 times. I find it so hard to work out what angle to hold the knife at 😥 Thanks for your help its v lifesaving
Howmuch
Hi 👋 i love your videos and i want to purchase the kit but i want to know if you ship to my country (Romania)
Sure, send me an email and I’ll reply with the price list :) [email protected]
Why no ricasso?
It limits the usefulness of the blade :)
I dont know why but your voice is very calming :) good information as well!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you fur an extremely helpful video.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
New subbie here! I came to understand the carving process, and stayed for the understanding of dominance factors and safety first. I'm looking forward to exploring your channel.
Awesome! Welcome :)
Good day Tom, thank you so much for sharing this video on the proper use and handling of carving axe, plus great reminder on safety. I am planning to carve a spoon for the first time and I will put into practice the proper use of axe you shared in this video. Before I’ll engage into spoon carving, may I know if can I use the GB Kubben / Hand Hatchet, for carving a spoon blank? Thank you so for your insight and advice on this. Blessings
You’re very welcome! I don’t know that particular brand, but so long as it’s light, sharp and comfortable it’s going to be fine :)
Sick! I like the long slender blade. Maker? Custom?
Thank you! It’s a custom knife based off my design!
It seems from the information I can gather (from internet sources so, grain of salt and what not) that kangaroos are often harvested unethically. Does anyone know of a more ethical source for kangaroo leather?
Kangaroo leather is the most ethical leather there is, they’re only killed to manage numbers and maintain a healthy population, we don’t farm them, they’re all wild and in absolute abundance! There are strict laws, rules and regulations and the shooters require licensing to do so. It’s a highly regulated affair, but like anything, vegans, activists and other people who have no understanding on the essential importance of animal mitigation and management will try and use tactics to ruin an essential undertaking. Just like deer population in the Uk, kangaroos have to be managed, without they’ll cause untold damage to the ecosystem and environment here in Australia. Their health as a species will be affected and so will other species. Kangaroos are NOT killed for meat, skin etc, that’s all a byproduct of managing them and thus using kangaroo is using a material that would otherwise simply go to waste!
Tom As a 60yr old just starting the trip with spoon and bowl carving, I have watched many KZreadr's and found you! I'd love to check out your sharpening system as I will also be watching all your video's. Look forward to hear from you. Jeff

Jason mraz
Yes :)
I am, as a knifemaker, slightly aroused by this
LOL!
Till what grit did you sharp that beautiful knife ??? Scary sharp indeed 😉☺️👍🏻👍🏻
I go to 10,000 grit!
You only use the sandpaper once? That seems like a huge waste. Can you re-use it?
Any sharpening wears abrasives just like would occur on natural stone, diamond, belts, wheels and ceramic. This affordable and the size of system designed not to waste any amount of abrasives
Im definitely going to start sealing the end grain with waterproof pve great tip thankyou its going to make my life easier
You’re welcome!
I store mine in a plastic box of water to keep it green for when i want to season it
Absolutely! You can do :)
Ye i just try get some kind of decent equal pressure with pratice u definitely improve good simple no frills vid it is that simple really people make out its wizardry 😂
Glad you enjoyed it :)
huh! I always thought any little axe was a hatchet... But I keep seeing "carving axe" for these woodworking hatchets. So my definition must be wonky.
Hey :) a hatchet is for splitting kindling for a fire. Often used around a camp. This is a carving axe as it has a different bevel, not designed for splitting and instead for carving :)
@@spooncarvingwithtom Ah! That makes sense now! Thank you!
Hey Tom I want to ask you where did you get those strips of sandpaper and that block that you used to put the strips of sandpaper on
Hey, I make and sell the glass sharpening systems! I also have links to the abrasives. Please email me [email protected] and I can forward all the info and prices :)
What brand and model is the axe in the video? Thanks.
it’s a Hans Karlsson Slojd Axe
Sure, it’s cool and all. But what I’m looking for is a blade that, if I swung it in the air, would slice through the fabric of reality itself, opening a small black hole.
🤣🤣🤣 haven’t managed that yet! Thanks for watching :)
Was Nic Westermann first? Or Northbay Forge?? That looks like a bent knife from Northbay.
Hooked knives have been around for hundreds of years :) as has the tramline design - see scythes which are well known for that design. Nick was the first person to use that concept recently, others have followed :)
Where can you find the sandpaper. And glass block. And thank you.
