I just received my sharpening system this morning. It is brilliant ! I've been struggling for quiet some times to get my knives sharp again with different methods but with this kit and the tutorials it was so easy. Scary sharp indeed ! Tom’s kit works and he’s positively nutty about the particulars and quality control - he does all the making. If you carve, you NEED sharp. Buy his kit.

Am giving it another go by studying your insights. I’ve been trying to get into woodworking for over three years, have a bunch of tools but I lack the skill of sharpening. Have had several lose bushcraft courses with short attention to sharpening, have bought multiple books and seen probably hundreds of videos. Tried it all, don’t get the principles. Autodidact mimicry isn’t gonna “cut” it for me. Something isn’t clicking in me. And by now I’m just confused. I probably need several intensive courses to get it into my muscle memory. But I can’t find someone in my area who knows about pre-industrial woodwork cutting tools. So for now, your videos are the start of my new attempt since about a disappointing year.

Burl is in my opionion very hard to work with, especially if you're just starting. When I carved a small kuksa out of a birch burl it was very random and it could go from cross grain, to end grain, to with the grain, to end grain again and lastly against the grain. So I would recomend some softer Wood that is not burl and save the finer wood for later use

xcrazedxrhetoricx hey! As Phillip said, burl is tricky because the grain is interlocked and twisted, try some straight grained wood :) I had many precious videos and now just getting back into uploading new improved content! Stay tuned ☺️👍
