Good Day Tom thank you so much for sharing the safe and proper handling of the carving Axe . It is an excellent resource for me as a new carver. You instructions are important resource for me to highly respect my carving tool(s) blessings ❤
Very helpful video. So basically, through body mechanics, you want your axe hand to be a consistent, up and down chopping machine, while all the action of forming the work takes place by moving the work itself. Akin to a blacksmith working hot steel under a hydraulic hammer.

I have never done anything like spoon carving before and recently have made the decision to start. This video was very helpful in learning the mechanics of using the axe. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Hey :) welcome to the craft! Glad you enjoyed this video!
Holy cow this was helpful. I've been killing myself fighting and forcing the axe, rather than relaxing and letting it do the work. That axe looks so much like one I got from a U.S. smith Joel Nowland.

Great :) glad it helped!
How astonishing! How detailed! I've watched SO MANY axing videos and never noticed the detail.
There are SO many videos saying "go get an axe and start making spoons" - with some sketchy axe-swinging examples. This is a clean, clear description of how the axe SHOULD be used - thank you. I'm still at the knife, hook, and bandsaw phase. Maybe next year I'll think about starting up with the axe... (a big investment in $ and space and time to learn properly!)
Learned more in five minutes then the last three videos I’ve watched. Been playing with chisels and bot a cheap carpenter axe and adze today. Ty for the tips

that axe looks like the ideal shape that i've been dreaming of for a carving axe. can you share where you got it/ who makes it?
Nice vid. Tom, all makes perfect sense! I'm VERY wary of the tool that I keep razor sharp. You just need to be sensible... Looks to be a nice little axe there too! Thanks from MN. You taught me to sharpen very well...*grins*

Good day Tom, thank you so much for sharing this video on the proper use and handling of carving axe, plus great reminder on safety. I am planning to carve a spoon for the first time and I will put into practice the proper use of axe you shared in this video. Before I’ll engage into spoon carving, may I know if can I use the GB Kubben / Hand Hatchet, for carving a spoon blank? Thank you so for your insight and advice on this. Blessings

You’re very welcome! I don’t know that particular brand, but so long as it’s light, sharp and comfortable it’s going to be fine :)
Thank you for the video and I am saving up for your sharpening system. Also what is the axe you are using in this video? Which axe is your favourite?

A file is probably the best then sharpen it afterwards :)
Do you prefer simmetrical or asimmetrical bevels? I'm looking for a carving ax and I read conflicting opinions on this. Thank you.
Like! What make and model of axe is that? And what would recommend for a first carving axe? Thanks!

Hey :) it’s a Hans Karlsson Slojd Axe. I’d suggest a cheap, light, store brought hatchet that you sharpen well!
What brand and model is the axe in the video? Thanks.

@@richardkunicki5684 yep, as I mentioned in the video, you can absolutely have a small block mounted on 3 legs if you wish. It’s not as stable and it doesn’t absorb the impact of the axe as well, but for most people it’s more practical as not many people have access to such large hunks of wood! It’s absolutely an acceptable alternative though :)
Hello, what brand of Tourniquet would you recommand ? Thanks !

huh! I always thought any little axe was a hatchet... But I keep seeing "carving axe" for these woodworking hatchets. So my definition must be wonky.

Hey :) a hatchet is for splitting kindling for a fire. Often used around a camp. This is a carving axe as it has a different bevel, not designed for splitting and instead for carving :)
