It very much depends on your riding style and how well you maintain air filters and oil changes. 164 could be a lot if you're racing in the desert, or not much at all if you're dualsporting. Cool bike! I like the older gen bikes for events like this, engines a bit more robust, hold more oil and obviously have a kicker. What did you/they use to mark those bolts? Also, did you safety wire anything? Thanks! Huge accomplishment to finish, well done amigo.
@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 Жыл бұрын
The marking paint is a gel called "Vibra-TITE Viz-Torque Tamper Detection Marker Red" (or green). I got it on Amazon as an experiment, but I'm sure any good hardware/fastener place would have something similar. Makes it pretty easy to check stuff at a glance. As far as safety wire, none. Shoulda used it on my shifter. I've done it before, but it's a PITA and I decided not to. So I lost my shifter just after jumping over the road at RM 200 and had to pull off like a dickhead. I obviously had a spare, so by the time I got it bolted on, the locals had found my original just up the course a way and brought it back to me...along with many offers for Tecate Rojo! 😅 As far as older generation bikes, the kicker is a big thing to me (sorry, I'm usually a LONG way away from the truck and walking is lame). The other thing is that 2016 was the last year before KTM really started locking down the ECUs, and I've found that even in stock mode unflashed, the 2016 ECUs are far, FAR more rideable than the newer ones in gnarly stuff...right up until the 450xcf-w just came out and is the bees knees.

@Team Agoge - The Enduroists agreed, I really like the new uncorked FE/XCFW 450s, its the bike to have I think. I do alot of remote stuff in Idaho (Tour of Idaho, Grit, etc) and am starting to take a more Baja'ish / Dakar'ish approach to bike prep, hardening parts, safety wire and love the idea of paint on bolts. I can't do without kicker, so just picked up a super low hour 13 500, full OEM XCFW wiring swap, new fuel pump, Vortex, double GPS units, stripped all street legal DS shit off...minimalist as possible. Thanks for response, take those boys up on the Rojo next time 😀

@@motominded5275 I also like the idea of PDS. Nothing is going to be as good as linkage for high speed hammering, but PDS sure is simple and less stuff to fail. Yes I know it's exceedingly uncommon, but half the problems that'll strand us in the woods on a decently prepped are exceedingly uncommon! It's funny, I actually used the kicker on the 450xcw. Battery tested well at home, but was clearly failing. My fault for not replacing it with an AntiGrav, but there's only so much money to go around and I assumed risk by keeping the smaller Firepower one. Used to be about the Rojo, but I can't drink beer anymore (tragedy for post-ride celebration but victory for belt line). Man, I can't tell you how many people offered me tequila during the race! [Continued from video narrative] Up was not going to happen. I'd removed my rope kit because I was working with a partner and carrying a lot of work gear and did not expect to be doing a recovery like this. Also, there were no real feasible anchors to set up either a single or a z-drag system. Side-hill it is! One direction looked like I could actually Graham Jarvis / Carls Diner it (you'll have to look up Erzberg Rodeo if those terms don't make sense), but there was a thicket of brush and a sheer drop that I knew would get the best of me. The other way sucked, but it was relatively clear of obstacles other than being 100ft of loose rocks ranging from gravel to boulders. Did I mention I was running a take-off Baja tire on the rear of the bike? With a hard mousse? So I couldn't even air down!! Well, no sense expending energy bitching, better get on with it. I busied myself with finding burned snags, embedding them in the rocks and pinning them, then creating a trail running at an oblique to the slope. We went from 70 degrees to about 30. Still stupidly steep, but somewhat manageable. I set about building my new trail. Larger rocks had to be either incorporated and built up to, or pushed off the side. Clearly, anchored rock is better, so building up to it is the best choice. With the snags set, I had a "curb" to hold in the rocks, which I set in and then filled in from big to small. Lucky for me, my pipe was rather tweaked and set off the intermediary flange of the cylinder, so I could start the bike, work the throttle, and put my hip or quad into the back of the exhaust, giving a heave and moving the bike upward 4-6" at a time. This was a learning process, and at some point I got greedy and blew out one of my curbs, which set me back a half hour of re-building. I wish there was a dramatic, climactic finish, but the reality is, I spent 2.5 hours picking up rocks by hand, building a path as smooth as possible (which was not very), and moving the bike 100ft up the side, a few inches at a time. I never panicked, I never despaired. I just accepted. "This is what has to happen. It will happen. You will get there. Time is irrelevant. Pain is irrelevant. You don't do this, you don't get out. Simple. Get to work." I got to work. The water rose nearly a foot from where I'd initially had to jump in! It rained off and on the whole time. I was hungry and cold. I was also successful. I got out. I got back to camp, hypothermic, hungry, and extremely tired, well after dark. I survived. And I laughed. Not the hardest thing I've ever done. Not even by a long shot. And you know what? I wish all of you who are reading this or watching the video had enjoyed the same opportunity. Because every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

I thought it was the valves, so I adjusted them like 5X and the tapping sound didn’t stop. So I figured we’ll, let’s just go for a ride and see if anything breaks lol. We’ll I came to a stop sign and was holding in the clutch when the engine died out, and wouldn’t turn over, I’m really glad I wasn’t gunning it at that moment in time. I thought a valve was bent or broken and seized the piston or something, but when I opened the head, that stupid little nylon bolt was still at the top just barley hanging on all stripped. I was sooo relieved to find out my head didn’t blow and it was just one little bolt.

Great overview and awesome reviews. Plan to follow your future rides man. 👍
Rock on, thanks! Still recovering from the rotator cuff gift Rancho Meling gave me, but I plan to put my ironman costume back on in November this year for the granddaddy peninsula run!
@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 right on. I have decided to run it before it’s too late as well. Getting the bike and setting up for a run in 2025. Would love to see a video of how you physically prepare, map setup and pre run etc etc man. Thanks for inspiring and leading a example for others. I’ll cheer you on this year and hope to see you the next! 👍
Cool bike! I like the older gen bikes for events like this, engines a bit more robust, hold more oil and obviously have a kicker. What did you/they use to mark those bolts? Also, did you safety wire anything? Thanks! Huge accomplishment to finish, well done amigo.
Probably would have gotten better results if I'd just listened to them!😅 R'Idaho is on the list! Matter of fact, we close on the house here in WA the day after tomorrow and head to north Idaho. Hellll yeah!
@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 I did TOI T1 in 2021, made it to day 6....BUT on D1 I had an electrical problem on my 2017 250 EXCF and shorted out starter fuse, didn't know it at the time, but that kicker saved the day....back when you could retrofit kickers! Where in WA? N Idaho is great, especially stuff out of Wallace, amazing stuff out of Salmon / Challice too.... I'm over border in Central Oregon but do a fair amount of riding in Gifford/Leavenworth/E WA
@@motominded5275 Gifford is truly my jam. Favorite place in all of WA in a very tight race with Teanaway gnar! I retired from Fort Lewis, so Tacoma area. Sick of the skyrocketing crime and the stupid politics and ever-increasing expenses, so it's time for a change now that I have an opportunity! CDA area for the new house and looking forward to potentially more remote when the last kid finishes HS.

I have a ktm 525 exc with 400 hours on it. Should i use this method or stick to the 0.06 shim ?
absolutely use this method! It will be far more accurate, as the feet on your adjusting screws will have started to "cup" and the feeler gauge would measure the clearance using the outer circumference rather than the now-concave center.

Thanks a ton for taking the time to go over your bike. Really great meeting you in Portland last Friday night. Have a good week ahead!!
Right on! If I was able to help get some guys stoked to get out there and send it, then it was a perfect night! Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for all the tips and info on your prep.
Hell yeah.. You can cry about it, or get busy, only one of those options is gonna get you back to camp.
Exactly. Feeling sorry for myself wasn't covering any distance!
hmm, i wonder if this will suffice on my 07 625 sxc?
I had to do a little searching because I didn't realize there was a 2007 625sxc. Were they in Aus only? Europe? Anyway, I looked and the adjusting screws on them are M7x0.75mm whereas the RFS is M6x0.75. Is the clearance still 0.005" / 0.13mm? If so, I'd have to check with an engineer smarter than me, but it seems like it would work exactly the same. 625sxc - www.mototech.com.au/partFinder/fiche/ktm/2007/625-sxc/valve-drive#content 525exc - www.ktmworld.com/oemparts/a/ktm/600f887587a8660e9cf8335f/valve-drive

Sorry to see the race didn't go the way you wanted. I raced the 24hrs of Glen Helen this year Ironman and did a youtube series documenting it. I know how much time, effort and money goes into these big race projects. I would be curious to know what went wrong and what you would do differently if you were to do it again.
Well, my first goal in all of this was simply to finish. Look at the stats and it was a 50% attrition rate. The course was absolutely brutal--like above and beyond. So I'm happy with a finish, even if it was beyond the time limit and technically listed as a DNF. Looks like I'll have to go back... Bummer! 😁
Oh that's funny, I've been trying to figure out this new youtube channel thing and managed to reply from a different one. Well, 2 weeks hasnt' changed my perspective. Gotta get back in it!

A guy I know is looking to trade his 2009 crf450r for my 2017 230f with cash on his end. His bike looks pretty decent but I'm having trouble deciding lol. Any thoughts?
There's a guy below asking the same question. I personally would not. Unless I know the guy and the bike. Old 4steoke mx bikes are usually beat to shit and you have no idea whether the head is a ticking time bomb. Plus 1st year EFI sucked.
Grate idea! Many thanks!! 👍👍👍
You should make a video on finding TDC for both sides
TDC means intake and exhaust are closed. You're not at TDC if one side is closed and the other is open.
@Sean Purtell I know what it means and how to find it, many people don't.
OMG, solo? Glad you're okay.
Possibly not my brightest hour. But the trail was "clear". Oops! Funny how something that small can change everything! 😅
Omg this just happened to me recently. I got soo lucky my motor wasn’t Grenade’d though. I was hearing a super lout tapping noise inside my head and I couldn’t figure out what the hell it was.
Buy a lottery ticket! 😉
I know someone who has a 09 450r for sale $3500... dunno if it's ever been rebuilt tho? Why do people rebuild these bikes so often with little hours on them? Racing fuels literally burning up the engine is probably the reason? How many hours on the bike should I be looking for if buying used? I don't want to buy and have to spend money on it anytime soon after the buy...
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy an 09 450R.
@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 Why?
@@JackWithDoodles the 09 was the first year of EFI. The fuel pump filter setup is different from 10-11 and doesn't work as well. Mine ran lean and flamed out unexpectedly all the time, even when freshly built, and the only solution was a piggyback controller from JD Jetting. To be 100% honest, the 2008 was a much, much better bike than the 2009-11 iteration. To top it off, that's a 13-year old 4-stroke MX bike, and it has likely had the piss beat out of it with undetermined maintenance. Who knows what the head and cylinder are like. You might get lucky, or you might be purchasing a time bomb. For me, it wouldn't be worth it unless I knew the history and the owner.

@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 I also know of a 2016 ktm 250 factory edition $4300 available but I think that a lot of money buying used dirt bike.. 77 hours and was rebuilt at 60 hours? Why would that person rebuild with only 60 hours on it? Racing fuels literally burning up the engine? Gotta watch fools on marketplace tryna rip folks off with pandemic prcing..lol
@@kennethjohnson6223 $4300 for a 250xc with 17hrs on the top end is a great price. Why was it rebuilt? Who knows. Could be any number of reasons. Was the guy racing hard? Did he accidentally run it without the air filter seated? A failed water crossing? If the bike is in good shape, that's a deal.
@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 the guy said it was factory suggesting replacing the piston every 50 hours.... I say no way do I believe that unless they are running top fuel dragster racing fuels blowing up the engine between every run...lol... the seller never answered me to the question has ir ever been raced or had racing fuel run through it.... so dunno? I think I am going to stay away from dirt bikes as 99% of them have been dogged....
