Rebuilt from split cases, 11-year old Carl kicks the CRF450R over while cold. Bravo, dude!

A guy I know is looking to trade his 2009 crf450r for my 2017 230f with cash on his end. His bike looks pretty decent but I'm having trouble deciding lol. Any thoughts?

There's a guy below asking the same question. I personally would not. Unless I know the guy and the bike. Old 4steoke mx bikes are usually beat to shit and you have no idea whether the head is a ticking time bomb. Plus 1st year EFI sucked.

Sorry, didn't see this. I don't think a full tear-down is all that common, but this bike had a tortured past and really poor maintenance before I got a hold of it in Saudi Arabia. Bad metallurgy in 5th gear meant the gear dogs had worn and would not lock the bike fully in 5th gear, so it had to be split for that reason alone. It had been run with low coolant on multiple occasions and the head was warped, so that got re-surfaced by a machinist.

I know someone who has a 09 450r for sale $3500... dunno if it's ever been rebuilt tho? Why do people rebuild these bikes so often with little hours on them? Racing fuels literally burning up the engine is probably the reason? How many hours on the bike should I be looking for if buying used? I don't want to buy and have to spend money on it anytime soon after the buy...

@@JackWithDoodles the 09 was the first year of EFI. The fuel pump filter setup is different from 10-11 and doesn't work as well. Mine ran lean and flamed out unexpectedly all the time, even when freshly built, and the only solution was a piggyback controller from JD Jetting. To be 100% honest, the 2008 was a much, much better bike than the 2009-11 iteration. To top it off, that's a 13-year old 4-stroke MX bike, and it has likely had the piss beat out of it with undetermined maintenance. Who knows what the head and cylinder are like. You might get lucky, or you might be purchasing a time bomb. For me, it wouldn't be worth it unless I knew the history and the owner.

You bet. Got a 14-year old at 5'5 kicking a KTM 525exc in flip flops. If the valves and rings are right, no problem. Practice! Now to ride...? Maybe? Grown men get beat up by 450's all the time. My teens are on big KTM thumpers (520, 525, 450) bikes, but theyre very experienced and confident.

@@kennethjohnson6223 $4300 for a 250xc with 17hrs on the top end is a great price. Why was it rebuilt? Who knows. Could be any number of reasons. Was the guy racing hard? Did he accidentally run it without the air filter seated? A failed water crossing? If the bike is in good shape, that's a deal.

@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 the guy said it was factory suggesting replacing the piston every 50 hours.... I say no way do I believe that unless they are running top fuel dragster racing fuels blowing up the engine between every run...lol... the seller never answered me to the question has ir ever been raced or had racing fuel run through it.... so dunno? I think I am going to stay away from dirt bikes as 99% of them have been dogged.... I would rather have a 250 to 450 dual sport so I can ride on the road in case my van is out of order any length of time.

It’s not a CR500 or XR600. CRF450’s start quite easily if they are taken care of( valve adjustment etc). I miss my ‘03 450 but my ‘19 CRF250r and ‘95 CR250r make up for it being gone lol.

For an 11 year old who weighs less than 100lbs, it's a big kick, even when freshly built with valve lash to spec. Same kid rides a KTM 520EXC now and kicks it. 13 and 120lbs
