KTM RFS 1/6 turn method for valve adjustment

Helping a buddy wrap his noggin around the 1/6 turn method of adjusting the valve lash on the KTM #RFS engine for #badbetty the #racebike. Pretty nice that you can do this in a parking lot with no special tools. The math of the M6 0.75mm fine thread screw adjustors means that by turning it 60deg (1/6), you've moved it to the necessary clearance. Matter of fact, as the feet on the adjusting screws wear in and start to dish out, the feeler gauges are actually LESS accurate since they give you a reading at the outer circumference of the foot, not the concave center which is pushing the valve open.
Hardest part is figuring out which TDC you're at without opening it up, so you don't adjust at overlap. Put it in 6th and turn the rear wheel slowly. Should hear a bigger chuff and see both rockers move as you get the right one. Normally you can wiggle the rockers the tiniest bit side to side because they're fully unloaded at that point. If not...check your work on finding TDC!

I'm surprised the Clearances are the same for both Inlet & Exhaust. Just about every other Engine on the Planet has slightly larger gap for the Exhaust.

I have a ktm 525 exc with 400 hours on it. Should i use this method or stick to the 0.06 shim ?

absolutely use this method! It will be far more accurate, as the feet on your adjusting screws will have started to "cup" and the feeler gauge would measure the clearance using the outer circumference rather than the now-concave center.

hmm, i wonder if this will suffice on my 07 625 sxc?

I had to do a little searching because I didn't realize there was a 2007 625sxc. Were they in Aus only? Europe? Anyway, I looked and the adjusting screws on them are M7x0.75mm whereas the RFS is M6x0.75. Is the clearance still 0.005" / 0.13mm? If so, I'd have to check with an engineer smarter than me, but it seems like it would work exactly the same. 625sxc - www.mototech.com.au/partFinder/fiche/ktm/2007/625-sxc/valve-drive#content 525exc - www.ktmworld.com/oemparts/a/ktm/600f887587a8660e9cf8335f/valve-drive

@@teamagoge-theenduroists8683 its actualy a 06 but they didn't reach Australia till 07. but same same . i had some explaining to do at vehicle rego office when transferring the rego over to me couple years back .the owners manual even says 2007 but the compliance plate on the bike says 2006 but the rego papers for the bike said 08. but anyway the manual says, valve clearance intake and exhaust cold is 0.12 - 0.15 . . so i`m figuring the one sixth turn could be good?

How many hours do these engine go between rebuilds mate? I have a 01 520 exc with 164 hours is that considered a lot?

It very much depends on your riding style and how well you maintain air filters and oil changes. 164 could be a lot if you're racing in the desert, or not much at all if you're dualsporting. If you're doing the maintenance I'd say you have plenty of life in that engine. When you start running out of adjustor screw on the intake valves or getting down on power, it's time for a top end. Love the 01 520. Ours pulls harder than the later 450 and 525exc bikes!

@@pnwdirttalk thanks heaps for the reply. They’re definitely very powerful, it’s much faster then my 2014 yz450f. I have just one more question, is the tapping noise normal? A lot of people say it’s normal for rfs engines it just seems like such an aggressive noise to be normal regardless of still running fine. Thank you
