Join Kenneth, Craig, the kids and a stinky mutt called Prince on board their 30ft sailing vessel called "Sea Cactus"
We are based in the UK and do what we like to call "proper sailing" i.e on a cold day we will still be out sailing, and of course we skip the pina coladas and cocktail umbrellas for a pie and a pint in the local watering hole.
We sail around the south coast of the UK but are slowly making our way further afield as time permits, i share these videos in the hope to inspire others into sailing and show people how to do it on a budget or just show how accessible and easy it is, if your looking for sailing, DIY, How to's & real life navigation then tune in!
Sailing is not all about crossing the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, there are some great challenges and places right on mine and your doorstep, and i certainly will try and avoid land based video nonsense and help de-mystify all that is sailing a boat!

Is that any salt usig during the time of antifouling?
Enjoyed video, but think you should consider a better mike.
Can you provide more info about that windlass: model # ?
Genius! Thank you!
woW
Pity we did not have better view of the engine but well done on the job!
Did you say when leaving Poole, 'Bilton Head'??? Cant see Bilton Head on the chart.
Do they allow liveaboards in Weymouth?
Brilliant thank you
Basically
which yacht haven? im at fambridge
Hi! This transponder is impossible to get anymore it seems? With this, and a yakker( and no plotter), perhaps signal could be sent out to any PC? Do you know anyone who still sells this transponder?
Our you still sailing and doing videos
The first video I had to see in 0.75 speed
Are you coming back to KZread?
What about navigating in fog if your electronics fail? Could you show us how to do this?
I did not see you change the fuel prefilter; do you not have one? I recently bought a boat, an old one, with literally no acces to the fuel tank, but had to go sailing. Fortunatelly the previous owner left me a few spare parts including filters. I had to change the prefilter/water separator twice, due to the gunk from the fuel tank.
Hi, should you pass another boat/ ship port to port, ?
OUR 5TH GRADE CLASS LIKED YOUR SCHOONER; ESPECIALLY SOFIA, GIOACCHINO, BECKY, YUSUF, IRENE, VICTOR, CHIARA, FILIPPO, and FEDRO.
Nice boat. I'm actually impressed with the forward V Berth. Sensible Height. Ny last boat it was a right struggle to get upmintonthe V Berths, and there was real Danger of falling out. For Toast, you can get cheap stainless toasters that pop on top of a gas burner, though you have to watch out for burned toast. Easy to get in the swing of though. Well done on the size of the House Battery Bank , 👍something handy like plastic bags to greatly reduce the space things like sleeping bags and clothes take up, is Vacuum heavy duty bags. Put stuff in, like bulky Warm Winter Winter gear, sleeping bags etc, and with a hand pump, you extract all the Air. What a difference. I could get all bulky stuff regularly used into seperate vacuum Bags in the V Berth locker, and spare dry sleeping bags and such under a saloon Seat. A Great Boat for where you are based and with a Marina Berth. Years of fun and Adventures ahead. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍🙂
I've only once seen the water there so calm. North winds are a blessing. Nice vid for a cold autumn day
!!!....at the 9 minute mark he tips all the crap from the foul side of the old filter into the new filter!
What has happened to you
Rather nice boat! I do get the resounding impression though that's it's not for someone of my stature (6 foot 2)
I operate a D1-13 and have twice experienced overheating. Both times while motor sailing on a port tack. Engine hours @ 170. I have ordered a new thermostat but before I install that I will raise the expansion tank like you did here. Glad I saw you video on the topic of overheating. Thanks
It looks nice there, what's the cost of mooring!!! We love your videos.
How much When I turn 18 in a few year I would love to save up for one of these
Excellent video thank you. We experience the same problem with overhiting, same symptoms after wavy sailing, so planing to apply your fix too. I can see in comments it works for you. We have another issue there, it looks the coolant disappears and we have to refill it quite often, but no sign of any leakage, no signs of the coolant in the oil, nothing. We refill the coolant and keep it over the max even, we noticed it helps a bit with the overhiting issue, which may prove your theory as well, even if you proved it already 😉
I’m a bit of a newbie and have a symmetric spinnaker on my 28 foot boat that I just bought. It has a pole, but I’d prefer not to deal with that. Why do you need the ATN Tacker mod that goes around the furled foresail? Why can’t you just attach the tack line to the bow area of the boat? Thanks very much. I also saw a episode of SV Delos: Flying a kite through New England..where they just fly a symmetric spinnaker without any pole. Seems a lot simpler than using a pole. Any thoughts?
It holds the tack, hence the luff of the spinnaker close to the center line of the boat and it can be adjusted up and down with your down haul / tack line for trim. also on some boats, securing the spinnaker tack to the deck is not the best way to set the sail. It is too low and the foot of the spinnaker will chafe on the bow pulpit, the tacker keeps it out the way and makes for an easy transition onto the other side. if what you have works for you, no need to overcomplicate it.
Personally I wouldn’t put fuel from the old filter into the new filter and I’d use fresh oil to lubricate the seal. Also use the glycerine lubricant for the impeller and i give the impeller cover a quick lap on some very fine wet and dry to ensure any bits of the gasket stuck to it are removed. 👍
Thanks for your lovely video
Where did you purchase your book from please to show wind direction
Our alarm goes off and the overheating symbol comes on. We have done everything, to no avail, except replace the thermostat but, our schematic doesn't show us where it is and where we thought it was, wasn't where it is. we have the D1-20. help anyone?
Can’t post a picture on here, but if you google d1-20 workshop manual it will help identify where you need to look, thermostats all look similar. You can always just put the thermostat in boiling water once it’s out the housing to see if it opens, saves swapping out good parts needlessly. Could just be something simple like a dirty heat exchanger, or if it’s happening when you heel over etc could be like ours in the video. It’s not really something you can diagnose remotely
Thank you for this video. I’ve got the same boat and engine so this I perfect for me! You guys seem fluent in engines which I am far from, so I have a question. When we bought our boat (fall 2020) the engine room was spotless. After just one summer of sailing there is a fair bit of black soot all over the engine and the walls. Is this normal or is something wrong?
Black soot could either be a tight belt and it’s belt dust or, you have a leak in the dry exhaust system somewhere, should be sootier where the leak is. But black dust on the engine is not normal, good luck 🤞
Music ruined what started like good video

This is not sailing..it's called motoring..duh
Hi what yacht have you gone for now ? Your blogs are great looking forward to following you both this year
Looking forward to your new adventures 👍
Lol I hear ya. Don't worry... The good stuff is on the way. ⛵
Отличное видео, вот было бы еще на русском
Basically x ??? Annoying
And where is the wife?
Nice boat
👍and to me getting my first sailboat in 40 years! Hope to see you out there!
As a fellow Bav30 owner on the South Coast I couldn't agree more, Here's to 2022 and fair winds!
Astonishingly classy, thought out, and suitable. Please check that the port side batteries are not wired in parallel as a lot of boatyards are stupid to keeping batteries isolated or in series. (6 volt golf cart). A much smaller set is possible if not wired in parallel. A second small solar panel is desired as the essential one can get broken mid-voyage. A spare Hong Kong 12 volt chest fridge is a good addition. The smallest ones give best sub freezing.
Great video and really informative! I have a boat in Christchurch and may I ask what chart you have there with the whole of Poole and IOW etc? I’d love to buy one! Thanks!!
I think that one is the imray iow and Solent approaches chart portfolio, you usually get 6/7 in the pack and it covers a fair few miles but they’re the right scale I find.
earned a Sub.. thank you great video
Hi Kenneth great episode as always... Have you put the boat up for sale as we are looking and thought we saw your boat on one of the sites. Hope you get back on tbe water soon.
