Learn how to sail a small sailboat; a step by step guide to the ATN spinnaker tacker

Learn how to sail a small sailboat; a step by step guide to the ATN spinnaker tacker to get your spinnaker flying shorthanded without a pole!
This is a quick video to help you on the topic of learning how to sail, My aim is to ensure you will learn how to sail a sailboat, be that tacking the Genoa and main sheet on the main sail or the spinnaker on the boat.
so if you want to learn how to sail on KZread, or learn to sail or if your new to sailing then this is the video for you show you how to sail & learn how to sail online
In this sailing guide i will show you how to sail your boat so you can start sailing sailing and this is just reflecting on our spinnaker use, and it always seems to be a popular discussion among sailors, now this works for us, it may not for you but when i first got into "spinnakers" i couldn't be bothered with the faff of a pole, nor did i want to start modifying the rig extensively.
equally i wanted to get the spinnaker up in 5 minutes without causing an argument and the the crew to resort to a mutiny!
i also wanted a simple rig i could manage in a blow and get rid of quickly, but i wanted that extra speed!
So i made my own ATN tacker for £13 and started flying my spinnaker as shown in this short video, i will show you how to rig it, hoist it, douse it.
and now even on short hour trips im more than happy to get the spinnaker out because its simple, fast, and easy to handle
if you want to know more about gybing and other such things then leave us a comment and we'd be happy to help get your spinnaker flying, so here's to not being afraid of the spinnaker and stop leaving it to gather dust! hoist with confidence.
i hope you enjoy the episode, please give it a thumbs up if you did, also don't forget to follow us on Facebook for live updates

Really enjoyed this video, the demonstration was informative and easy to follow. KZread really is lacking good simple end to end demonstration guides on the basics of sailing. I'm learning myself and seeing how you used the blocks and tied the lines off is the kind of guidance I've been looking for, so please keep it up. Some suggestions on future content: how to set anchor, how to attach and raise the main sail, general maintenance you do on the boat, the good and bad things of boat ownership. Cheap hacks such as the ones you did on your first few videos. Thanks for your efforts 😉

Steven Larcombe thanks for the comments! There’s a few upcoming videos on getting the boat ready to sail, setting anchor, and also we’re doing a little bit more on how to navigate in the future :) so stayed tuned

A trick: you can watch series at kaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.

I’m a bit of a newbie and have a symmetric spinnaker on my 28 foot boat that I just bought. It has a pole, but I’d prefer not to deal with that. Why do you need the ATN Tacker mod that goes around the furled foresail? Why can’t you just attach the tack line to the bow area of the boat? Thanks very much. I also saw a episode of SV Delos: Flying a kite through New England..where they just fly a symmetric spinnaker without any pole. Seems a lot simpler than using a pole. Any thoughts?

It holds the tack, hence the luff of the spinnaker close to the center line of the boat and it can be adjusted up and down with your down haul / tack line for trim. also on some boats, securing the spinnaker tack to the deck is not the best way to set the sail. It is too low and the foot of the spinnaker will chafe on the bow pulpit, the tacker keeps it out the way and makes for an easy transition onto the other side. if what you have works for you, no need to overcomplicate it.

I rigged the downhaul to a block on bowsprit. Then ran back to cockpit with ferrules :) With its own cleat. Just gotta make your diy tacker now and use my race spinnaker

I got 3 spinnakers I’ve been wanting to use badly and been wanting a easier way 1.25oz, 1.5oz, 1.75oz Do you run 2 sheets on each clew ?

Yes if I plan on doing a gybe, although for short sails where I won’t need to gybe I often don’t bother and just put the one working sheet on, worst case if the wind shifts I will just douse it back Into the sock.
