Tall ship sailing a top sail schooner & Uk sailing

Tall ship sailing, schooner sailing a top sail schooner Uk sailing
This video is all about tall ships and namely schooner sailing where we will show you what its like to be on baord a small tall ship where we tack gybe the top sail and also get the schooner sailing nicely in a F6.
this was taken on board a gaff rigged schooner with two masts and a sqaure rigged top sail on long yards, a true traditional sailing vessel still sailing in the UK as there are not many tall ships left in the uk to sail on.
If you're new to Cactus sailing when a why not check out our other videos, a good place to share would be here

where you can see our boat Sea Cactus which we sail and a little bit of info about who we are below;
Welcome to Cactus sailing where we are sailing the uk, and sailing uk waters, This season we’re heading west to the scilly isles but in future we hope to go sailing and travel further to France or Spain.
Our true ambition is to go sailing around the world cruising along the way in our sailing boat, although our boat might not be up to getting to the Mediterranean (for our comfort levels anyway)
To that point we may change the Bavaria 30 in the future for a bluewater sailing yacht or a liveaboard boat which we can live full time.
But for now the English channel is our ocean and sailing the pacific can be left to other sailing yachts like la vagabonde, we will stick to the south coast sailing until we follow in many others footprints.
This sailing vlog and this season you will see our life on board namely boat life in our tiny floating house as we avoid the storms and go off cruising the uk south coast which isnt quite blue water cruising but the tides and winds sure make for a challenging ride!

    Let us know what you think about climbing the mast and hanging off long yards to tie the sails up, Would you do it?

    I have done this on he Bark Endeavour and on Europa. It is quite hard and not my favourite but i think you soon get used to it. A good foot rope is necessary, a harness and also a means of getting on to the yard from the ratlines, not always easy.

    You DON'T need to climb the ratlines to employ the top sails. There are old designs for furling topsails & main square sails. There are 6-7 photos of the rig to be found in this link. www.modelships.de/Schooner_Hansine/Schooner-Hansine.htm Can also be accomplished by the tops of the square sails hanked onto a steel rod (like a big curtain rod) suspended under the yard and controlled by brailling lines and blocks. Can all be done from the deck. The lower mainsails can be removed by lowering the yard spar to the deck.
