The families didn't always accompany the transporters; most of the journeys were to transport stuff to and from the Overberg i.e. in both directions, up AND down the Gantouw pass. The pass was in use for 166 years. In the mid 1830's, the Great Trek took place, but by then Sir Lowry's Pass was in use and only then did entire families accompany the ox wagons.

Herewith a critically important service message. Please verify that those cannon shells have been deactivated. If not, the explosive in those shells will have become unstable and might start leaking. That means that they can explode spontaneously, which given the number I have seen, could lead to a catastrophe. Realise that the current members of the SANDF in all probability don’t have to intellectual faculty, to understand the situation. Please communicate this in a appropriate fashion, as a matter of urgency to the relevant persons.

I went through Roland's well years ago. NOT a cave system for beginners to attempt. ( Took me about 5hours to get through and I was hiking fit then) It is about 40 min hike to the North. Can't be sure but I think the Cape mountain rescue society may have sealed the entrance because of the many rescues they had to undertake. I did Boomslang and Oread halls as well. Both easy in comparison.

The castle never had a prison. Its a myth. The so called prison dungeon was use to store food, never prisoners. Dont believe the tourguides!
