In 93 I was teaching wood and metalwork at a school when we had a departmental visit. We were told then that “Bantu” education officials had said that when they took over, preparing kids for blue collar work was going to be phased out of schools. Not long after, industrial arts and home economics were taken out of schools in that format.

Thank you for sharing. I don't think many people know that this school exists. Hopefully more institutions like this one can be started all over our country.

We in Switzerland have 2 or 3 years of apprenticeship . You work 4 days practically and have 1 day a week theory. It's brilliant. After 2 or 3 years you are fully qualified in your job. All the not academic should have an apprenticeship opportunity !

What we actually need is a trade school for over 40s. All the nice programs are for school-aged kids, like New Gen (15-19). What about us old ballies who have been "made reduntant" out of the fields we knew, and now want to do something practical and maybe have a job again? Also, maybe in Gauteng?

My technical training at technical college took 4 years, that only gave me basics, then followed by two sessions of one year further theories, then still not qualified for selling white goods and radio and tv. That was another two years. To open up a business was another year of business economics. That is a long time, how does that compare with this technical training to be able to be a qualified technician?
