There _may_ be a way that a single programming wheel can be mechanically re-configured (using something like paper tape) to key in a new song, wiping the old one. It seems to me that adding and removing "armature" is unnecessarily complicated when you could "feed" the programming wheel the specs for a new song and have it self-configure (in much the same way a DOT MATRIX printer builds up it's image line by line), then do the same for the next song. Mechanical wear and tear of the removable songs will possibly introduce bump errors and inaccuracies as backstage is a rough and tumble environment, storing songs in road cases seems fraught with damage opportunity.

I would like to suggest also fabricating your own cart with at least 120mm hub rubber wheels to carry the songs. You never know what terrain it will need to go over when touring

Would love to see a functional miniature version of the machine using BBs! You'd make a killing selling little desktop models.

You should have alternating programming wheel channels. For example your odd number wheels is one song and even number wheels is another song. You can slide the wheel sideways and change to another song.

seems like you could now be able to just convert a midi file into a 3D printable model of the wheel

I’m sorry but that will be heavy and unwieldy and not stable when put to the real scale , why not use thinner strips with sift register thpe of design that changes the songs you could fit at least 8 songs in one wheel and basically change them immediately?

I think an electronic/solenoid solution would enable rapid iteration during the song-writing/programming step of the process. How cool would it be to write a draft of a song in MIDI, and then play that MIDI file on the MM3. From there you could manufacture the final pinning and wheels, and play the song fully mechanically on tour.

If you're cutting the profiles out of plastic, you could used coloured sheets for each different channel.

Hey, regarding the composing while playing, you can make a mechanism to auto remove all programming pins after it was used in 2 staps, the first stap slightly lifts the pins up. The second step removes it in its entirety. If you want a pin to be replayed during a loop you just prett it in slightly. The other ones will be removed entirely.

It looks to me like you’re stuck on the wheel. This limits your thinking to only the wheel. This also limits the length of your music to the size of your wheel. Since you mostly detach the music from the wheel, turn the wheel into a cog instead of thinking of music on the wheel. Then the music can be programmed on something resembling a chain. The music could be on a chain pulled out of a bin and deposited in a bin on the other end. You could loop the chains together to play the same music over and over or you could link different sections of chain together to make it as long as you wanted. As long as you had people behind the scenes attaching the links of chain you could play music for as long as you had the energy to step on your petals.

Could just have a larger stacked record player with long arms, and each "record" has pins ticking out of it; would make switching easier as just change the large programming discs, and the pin positions can be continuous/analogue giving potentially higher precision.
