    Mechatronics engineer here and I just want to tell you, again, to please take a deep look at your shafts before continuing with this design. You have very tight timing requirements. Long shafts, like that, are very likely to twist under load. Twisting shafts introduce delays that depend on the amount of twist, which depends on the load and speed. If it's calibrated the machine for one speed at one load and you then change speed or load, the different wheels may very likely no longer be in sync. Therefore the twist is a very important design-breaking issue that needs to be considered. It would be very advisable to get some mechanics engineers together and make sure that the shafts are a solvable issue, so that effort is not wasted in other places in case the shafts cannot be made to your requirements. If the shafts won't work, this design needs a complete overhaul.

    If you start with the drive section, you will not know if the drive section meets the machine's needs until all other sections are built. If you start with the music sections, you can design, build, and fully test them independently (e.g. using temporary electric motors with perfect timing) and know that they do exactly what you need, then *directly measure* the actual power and other requirements and use that to feed into the design for the drive section (using measurements to validate your physics calculations).

    Don't forget the marble recycling systems too - they also have a real bearing on the power train design - in many way I'd expect them to be the limiting factor as low friction materials etc mean the music drums can once up to speed require relatively little energy, but you can't lift 4kg of steel balls up that couple of meters without putting in some serious work. As remember they are seemingly very much more separate systems to the music side in this concept.

    The issue with this idea is you can easily make a machine that he is unable to power. By making the drive section first, with the maximum power output he can handle, then you can design the instrument sections with that limitation.

    That a good thought. I honestly don't know what's the best overall approach but it is good to measure actual power required and not just rely on calculations. For example, one thing that wasn't super clear to me in the earlier videos is whether the friction between the programming pins and marble gates is included in the calculations (it may well be). If such a thing is not anticipated, having an actual measurement will be useful.

    There is an old saying, if you can't make it perfect - MAKE IT ADJUSTABLE. My take on the shaft alignment, as discussed on a previous video, is to use misalignment couplings. I don't believe you'll be able to get perfect axial alignment using the method you described. Welding is too imperfect. The pull from the weld shrinkage will pull you out of alignment. MUCH better to just account for some misalignment by using appropriate non-fixed couplings.

  • @mellertid

    @mellertid

    3 ай бұрын

    I agree. Making sure the alignment is proper is surely possible, but rather involved, with the heavy modules on unknown scene floors. Couplings team and alignment crew hopefully do cooperate.

  • @piokul

    @piokul

    3 ай бұрын

    With the size of the machine, even if you precisely align with pins, but the floor isn't flat, the frame will bend and so will the shaft. Sets of double Cardan couplings in between modules and you can just place them next to eachother.

  • @Sully800

    @Sully800

    Heavy machines on floors that are not perfectly flat nor rigid, temperature and humidity changes, wear and tear… all of these issues speak to the importance of adjustability rather than seeking perfect alignment.

    And in this case that saying should also apply to the design elements that won't need operational adjustments - the shafts for instance can't really be sized until you have some idea of the load the drums and marble lifts will actually put on them, which you can't have until those elements are more designed. Also in the case of the music drums they must remain so synced to each other to play 'Martin's poorly defined but very excessive level of tight' music, so the shaft probably has to be well into the overkill on stiffness so the inertia of all the moving parts never causes that femtosecond of delay to the marble on the furthest machine... So the design should be sure to leave some space around the shaft bearing positions so you can increase the shaft diameter if you need to without having to majorly redesign anything else. There is a reason prototype tend to be many times larger than the final products, and this is despite all the previous machines very much a prototype.

    Happy Birthday Martin!! This is great news. I would like to reiterate something I said in regards to the original MM some time ago: Don't try to totally eliminate the mechanical sounds of the machine. It provides a sense of life, a soul, a heartbeat that electronic "music" machines do not possess. (The main reason that ALL electronic emulations of a Hammond B3 fail to a high degree.) You are human, your fellow performers are human, DO NOT allow the machine to force you guys into the background. It should be a part of, NOT the star of, your shows.

I think Martin is on the right track trying everything he can to minimise mechanical noise, but not beating himself up about whatever noise remains. Most marble constructions I’ve seen have been incredibly loud, I don’t think too little mechanical noise is going to be an issue.

    Agreed with this wholeheartedly, the old marble machines (both the original one and the X) gave a super cool, never-seen-before and intriguing vibe as a musical instrument. With lack of better words to describe, the old ones look like those chain reactions/domino effect setup where you do one small thing and everything else just fall into place, it is both satisfying and mesmerizing to look at, I can watch such machine to play for hours and wont get tired of it… and this new one, while it is bigger and presumably better, it has none of that, it just look like a big industrial machinery from a factory. Now is it well-engineered and is it cool to know things like that could exist? Absolutely! But it doesnt have that wow factor to it… it is like an assembly line that could do the job that needs 10 people to complete, is it cool? Probably, but does it make me wanna look at it for hours? Maybe no… sometimes bigger isnt better in this context imo, at some point it becomes so big that the marble isnt the spotlight of the system anymore, and you can barely keep track of the mechanical movements within the machine Now dont get me wrong, Im excited to see him working on something he likes and hope he gets it eventually, but personally I just cant come to love this new project and be as excited as I was for marble machine X…

    old one was an engineering artpiece, which excited me. new one is more of a musical scene set piece. it looks like the flairs big band will prepare for tours, u2s round stage, rammstein preparing some new pyro, etc. it doesnt wow you in the same sense, its a cool set piece on a concert, but concerts having cool unique set pieces is pretty standard among bigger bands so its not something new, the wow is limited. the original machine felt more like its own unique artpiece and instrument, it felt more magical and had more identity imo

    Martin, this is good news and im very excited for you, HOWEVER i strongly suggest you reconsider starting with the drive module. You need to know how much power you need from your drive module so that when you build it, it can handle it. You wouldnt, after all, design a crane starting with the hoist. No, you start with the max payload you need to carry, plus safety margin, and how mobile it needs to be. THEN you can build the trusses, pulleys, and calculate the energy drag, THEN you can think about the hoist. You mentioned in the video about wondering what type of gear to use, how many chains - if you start with the other modules and you know how much power and torque you need, you'll know how many chains, what kind of gears, gear ratios, etc. If you start with the drive module, I believe you'll find yourself coming back to it a few times as I have during my robotics projects after a few bent axles and broken bushings. If you've already done the power requirement calculations, then ignore the above :3 Best of luck to you Martin and team!

    I loved the original marble machine, and the direction the X was going, even with it's many changes, but this feels, to me, like Feature Creep: The Machine. The artistry and the beauty of the thing have been polished out and hammered off in the relentless pursuit of perfection and precision engineering. And while I'm sure the result will be fascinating and the process interesting, it's just... lost the spirit of the original idea, for me.

  • @ltd4all

    A simple drive solution would be to abandon the idea of meshing gears as a whole, as well as the use of any sort of metal chain, and instead consider a cogged belt design based around an automotive timing belt. A cogged timing belt will not slip, the belt will self-tension, and will run absolutely silent, especially when compared to meshing gears, or any sort of drive chain. plus belts don't require oiling, which would make a mess, and make tear down and set up a messy job. plus, you could use commo0n, standard automotive timing belts, and either carry spares just to be sure, or any auto supply store should have replacements. Automotive timing belts are designed to withstand the rigors of an automobile engine stresses, and survive 100k miles of use and abuse without skipping a tooth, or breaking. did I mention the natural ability for a cogged belt to run SILENTLY, and efficiently, without slipping?

    Standard parts.... You want "off the shelf parts". A standard part is one that meets a "standard" or certain design specs. Just because something is standard, doesn't mean you can just buy it off the shelf. It may still have to be custom ordered and / or manufactured.
