    I still drive my Cayman Green 1994 Ford Aerostar. I bought it used with 156,000 miles on it from a family member in 1998. It had been a flooring company vehicle. I use it nearly every summer, except for one summer during a move and one summer during Covid-19 travel restrictions. After having the fuel pump seizing up my second summer owning it, I always change the oil before parking it for the school year and top the gas tank off and put a can of Seafoam in the gas tank. I have thought about putting larger wheels on it. What have you found that works?

    I think that front bumper has been replaced - to one without the moldings (that's my guess). Aerostar badging did move to the tailgate in 1988. My 87 has them on the fender, my 88 has them on the liftgate. Lots of interesting quirks with the early ones! Some were only 5 passengers. Very rare!

    I went down memory lane. In 1995, my dad imported a 1990 XLT Auto from the US, and I still recall the sound of that 3.0L V6. But most importantly, I remember the sweet interior smell and the interesting quirks and features, such as the button to disable the speakers in the back. Those seats were more comfortable than any sofa in the living room. I also remember telling my friends that there was a computer inside, but honestly, I didn't know the purpose of it. As a side note, the reverse engineering used for the identification of the capital "R" (AerostR) was amazing.

    It is AEROSTAR, not EUROSTAR. 236,000 miles? Hardly even broken in. My last one went 415,000 miles and the one before it 431,000 miles. Current one has unknown miles, but based on condition & odometer it is either 270,000 or 370,000 miles. Definitely a work horse and always goes with NEVER any major issues, just maintainance.

The stars literally and figuratively aligned to create this magical 12 year period wherein hard-working people in hazelwood, MO created a physical embodiment of the limitlessness of the human imagination. And it was offered with a manual transmission

    Dings and Patina: Great combination to love a vehicle, and love the mate who accepts their spouse driving them. I accidentally dented my husband's brand new Ford F150 truck in 1983. He said, "what's a truck without a ding in it" !! Speaking of that truck, it's paint faded and failed leaving it pretty "ugly" in just a couple of years. Ford must have had a problem with the clear coat back in the mid 1980s. Thanks, or making me think of this history. Carry on, Janky!!

    I've owned my 1990 Aerostar E4WD since 1994. It's been a workhorse and a vacation wagon. A couple years ago, the transmission failed (170,000 miles), and had a cracked head, probably from my failing to notice a heater hose leak. I spent the time since doing a conversion to manual transmission and getting the engine overhauled. Ford never installed a manual transmission with a 4 liter v6 in the Aerostar due to the available transmissions being too weak to handle the load. But much later, in the early 2000's, Ford built an Explorer Sport Track, with the SOHC 4l v6, which put out more than 200 HP. They made a small number of them with a strengthened 5 speed manual, the M5ODR1-HD. A smaller number of those had 4WD. As it turned out, the tail housing on that transmission matched up with the TC-28 transfer case in the Aerostar E4WD, and I managed to find one. I had to find a manual Aerostar to get the top plate, which contains the shift rails, and placed the shift lever in front where it matched the hole in the Aerostar's transmission hump, vs the one for the Explorer. I'm about to take it out on the road again, after working on it for nearly 2 years. Here's the van and its history: photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPZmsfml-7V5y2YEVuCsE3zBGV4Igo7c1s9gHN-q_fgUXZ4ptINy6F899hilP_j8g?key=M294RFRabmVkZGhlR0RtZG9xb0Zycm5RNTZTeWZB And transmission: photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOCnI7qxABWMJoAhPdbDP589UT0ZOMP0XVs-7HTVNGeHfY1hTqD8m953DyqxTDQGA?key=aklYeF9YRXpqdklBMEd0Q0dPSTFpX3BIbjQ0d2xB

  • @JankyAF
    @JankyAFАй бұрын

    This is incredible! I actually had no idea the Sport Trac's came with a manual. Wow so yea a manual AND 4wd one must be super rare. Did you know the transmission would match the transfer case before you got it? Or was that just luck? This is so inspiring, so do you have the world's first and only 4WD manual Aerostar? Just piecing this together, so you put the engine and trans from the sport trac into the 'Star? I think the 4.0 in the star made around 155hp, so you are also getting another 30hp as well? This must be one of the single greatest Aero's out there. Please keep me posted on its progress, and if you have any more media of it send it to [email protected], especially any video, I would love to see that. Janky do thanky so much for sharing this, it never ceases to amaze me what cool things people do with their 'stars, and this is like on another level. I think I'm going to be keeping an eye out for manual sport trac's from here on out as well...

  • @eycchu
    @eycchuАй бұрын

    @@JankyAF Forgot to mention, the SOHC engine in the Sport Track is too wide to fit into the Aerostar's engine compartment without much cutting and welding, so I'm stuck with the OVH 155 HP engine. Mine was rebuilt, as necessitated by the cracked head causing damage.

  • @eycchu
    @eycchu27 күн бұрын

    @@JankyAF For some reason, my first, longer reply did not get posted, so I'll try again. I looked up the gasket between the transmission and transfer case, and it was the same part for both the A4LD and the M5OD-R1, so I knew my transfer case would at least bolt to on. The remaining question was whether the clock angle would be correct, or if the slightly longer length would be a problem. There was an old article on The Ranger Station that talked about a similar swap. He also said that a Ranger master cylinder would work on an Aerostar, but I found the it had to be the one for the Aerostar. There is a hole in the firewall for the MC with a block-off plate for the vans with the automatic transmission. I was able to use the bolts for that plate to attach the new MC. In my pictorials, I showed that I modified the pushrod to use a heim joint in place of the standard eyelet to attach to the clutch pedal, and replaced the stud on the pedal with a bolt, to avoid the common problem of metal-to-metal contact between the eyelet and stud, wearing each other out. The clutch and brake pedals from the manual van slid right in place of the larger pedal of the automatic version. So the things to look for if you want to do the conversion: The transmission (obviously). The bell housing is cast as part of the transmission, so you have to get the one specifically for your engine, either the 4.0 liter, or the 3.0/2.9/2.8 liter engines. The transmission cover/shift plate is specific to the Aerostar. And probably the shift handle as well. Getting the shift boot is kind of a necessity, as without it, you will be looking through the hole in the floor at the transmission, and hearing a lot of noise from underneath as you drive. The clutch and brake pedals also specific to the Aerostar. Everything else can be fabbed or modified.

  • @JankyAF
    @JankyAFАй бұрын

    Its so funny how similar and yet different they look. It always boggles my mind how us companies, and ford in particular, tweak things for the european and american markets. It seems not worth it from an engineering standpoint to make everything different, but I suppose govt legislation and a lot of focus group market research dictates it. The tourneo's look really cool. A turbo and a manual in this thing would have made it so cool. The european market just does vans so much better, in my opinion. Honestly I don't think there has been as good an all around work/utility vehicle in the US since the ford aerostar, but oddly enough Europe didn't really get many of those at all. Janky do thanky for the comment.

    This episode reminds me of the affluent people who leave everything to go into foreign missions. They spend half a lifetime accumulating things as they climb the corporate ladder. Then one day, the kids fly the coop and they begin to feel the emptiness of too many things, coupled with the loss of loved ones. They give notice to their six-figure jobs, or sell off their businesses. They liquidate cars, boats, collectibles, and pleasure craft, etc. At the end of an endeavor of getting rid of stuff, they climb onto an overseas flight, with only two or three bags that hold the last of their earthly possessions. I will hate to see the LeSabre go. You are a very blessed man, to have enough things that the cool car gets booted.

  • @JankyAF
    @JankyAFАй бұрын

    Janky do thanky, a lot to think about here. No doubt I'm blessed, but it is funny how abundance (of cars anyways) can start to become its own burden. I really don't want to sell any of them, but speaking of six figure salaries, I don't have one, hehe, so there are just certain ways in which having so many things starts to become irresponsible. We shall see, haven't sold any of em yet. I'll tell you this, if the Buick does go, its going to get one heck of a send-off! But in the meantime it needs to get back in front of the camera to show itself off.

    Great video! Very informative. I’m considering buying an 06 XLR with 40k miles. I’ve got a great mechanic but am very nervous about parts being hard to find and really expensive when maintenance is needed due to limited vehicle production run. What are your thoughts? Is this a dealbreaker?

  • @JankyAF
    @JankyAFАй бұрын

    Sorry for the late reply. Having a good mechanic who is willing to work on anything you have is a huge head start on any automotive purchase. I'd suggest watching anything the Car Wizard has done on his XLR, to get a sense of what you could be in for if the head bolt issue arises. I have actually seen quite a few super cheap XLR's for sale recently, I think there are more out there then it seems like. Wouldn't hurt to have a parts car if you could find one for a few thousand, because the head and tail light assemblies alone can go for thousands. Buying one does seem like a bit of a gamble, but if you are ok with potential high maintenence, and or living with a power roof that doesnt work, its such a special car and the looks never get old, and I was quite impressed with the driving experience. That said, a c5 or c6 corvette will be so much less of a headache, and offers a manual transmission, if thats appealing to you. Might not be. Let me know how it works out for you. Janky do thanky for watching

    Hey shoot I thought I replied to you, maybe it never went thru. I'd buy it! But you should probably not take my advice on buying cars. Just have to see if someone like midwest bayless sells a steering column, an extra wheel is easy enuf to find but a column might not be, in which case you are looking at a parts car/junkyard situation. Not the end of the world just have to do some more digging. but 1000 for a runner is dirt cheap. I realize this is probably a bit late now, but did you end up buying it?

    @JankyAFАй бұрын

    Awesome! Where did you find it? I had a crack in my '86, with my classic car insurance glass was covered luckily, did u have yours insured before the crack happened? - I called safelite - they showed up and told me they couldn't replace it because there was a tiny bit of rust around the window sill and they just packed up and left. So - I got ahold of a local glass guy, he acquired and installed a new one, and even rivited in a few door panels that had come loose for me. And insurance paid for the new windshield since it cracked while under their policy coverage. Anyways, short story long, you can either try to find one in a junkyard, but I think you can also get one thru a glass repair service providor, I'd try to find a local glass shop if possible. Granted, this was quite few years now and perhaps this oem stuff is getting harder to find. I also did a quick search and found this: www.fordpartsgiant.com/oem-ford-aerostar-windshield.html seems like there might be some companies selling new old stock stuff. Can either try to source one online, or again if you can find a good local glass shop who are not a-holes and willing to help out a customer with a unique request, they may be able to track one down for you. good luck, hope you get your 'star up and running, awesome u found a manual!

    Hello from France. If I may suggest you to run carburetor on these X. FI needs a bit of electric to work, Italian cars are notorious for electrical issues, because of the metal they use in their wires. It corrodes inside the wire (so sometimes you cannot see it, and if you sand the connector, it still doesnt really work) If you have a carburetor, this is full analog. You just need some wires for the inition, and wire the starter... and its pretty much it to be honest. Carb are easy to clean up and tune, no need anything electric or electronic. For isntance I have another car, its a Lancia Gamma (google it up, its a very rare model) my headlights were bogus for YEARS, and I mean, dozen of years... until I really found out, the corroded wire from invisible corrosion. Wires would still kind of work, but drain a lot of power as well because of the corrosion. If you wanna stay with FI, then try to get a super clean / refurbish one, with good electric. Anyway keep going I like your mini serie about the X !

    Hello! Wow janky do thanky for the excellent, comprehensive, and information-packed comment. Do you have the Gamma coupe or the 4 door wagon? Both are very cool looking cars, I have to say I really like that two-door coupe. I'm a bit familiar with the old Lancia's because the main Fiat parts supplier here, Midwest Bayless, also sells parts for Lancia, and occasionally I will see Beta's or Scorpion's for sale in the classifieds. And of course the Stratos was designed by Gandini (RIP) who also penned the X. Anyways, as to your comment, funny enough I actually specifically sought out a FI car, but not necessarily for any reason, I honestly just like the way the plenum looked in the engine bay, and my Ford Aerostar has a badge bragging about FI on it, as does this era Fiat, so I thought that was funny. I also did figure as a person who was born right around the time FI became mainstream, that it was just more reliable and required less maintenence and "tuning". But I do take all your advice very gratefully, and while the bosch system on there (L-jetronic I believe, the L standing for LUFT, or the german word for AIR) seems pretty basic and mechanical by modern standards, I can certainly vouch for how many wires there are under the dashboard. My cousin is quite talented in the electrical realm, and he has done the "brown wire mod" which should improve safety and reduce draw by redirecting power from certain things, I can't remember all the details but I believe it takes more power directly from the battery instead of sending it all over the system and back again to the wipers and lights, etc. Ironically, the electronics in this car have been one of the most reliable systems. The pop up lights, radiator fan, wipers, clock, and all of these systems have never given me any issues, despite the horrible reputation of Italian electronics. But truthfully I have not driven the car long or far enough to have given it a proper shakedown test in its current condition. Finally, the one thing really holding me back from messing too much with any of these systems is that the more I think it over and think about my long term ownership of this car, the more I think I may want to swap in a Honda K-series engine. I thought perhaps I would leave this one stock and do it to the parts car, but I'm worried the parts car may be too far gone, and also I am going to have trouble getting it Titled, because of some recent changes in state legislation. So the goal now is just to get the OEM exhaust on, replace a few fuel lines, and try to enjoy it as is, wait to see if anything else breaks, and start saving up funds to do a engine swap. Thanks again for the comment and the info and for watching all the way from France! please keep in touch, I'd love to see some photos of your fleet of cars - [email protected] - take care

    I've heard **THAT** sound before! These things actually hold up. Decently capable, moderate power, they just kind of work and get down the road with no fuss. GREAT vehicle for camping, day trips surfing, mild off-road, etc. Kind of like a well-mannered Jeep Cherokee from the '90s. I would totally buy another one of these first or second gen's for like 5-10k. The 4WD did work, worked quite well. I had the column shifter which I think is actually better, considering it maximizes the space. These cars are nothing special, but nothing wrong. They work, they run, they're easy to fix. Solid.

    That near-dead battery start-up sequence was so dramatic, I couldn't have re-created that for movie-magic if I tried. I love your summary of the 1st gen escape, couldn't have said it better, and great observation about the column shift. I remember in the 90's the buick would have the column shift and the pontiac would have the floor shift, cause it was "sportier" but its like who are we kidding? So totally agree with the ergonomic benefits of the column shift. I love the column shift on my 93 Aerosrar, when you put it in gear it feels like an occaision, like you are embarking on an adventure every time you crank that lever down. janky do thanky for the comment.

    I recommend all "Year of the Aerostar" content for archival in the Library of Congress to preserve a slice of subculture in our diverse national cultural heritage.

    This is one of if not the nicest comment I've ever received. The archival, evergreen, long-term, whatever you want to call it nature of this program, and the long slow build to create a compendium that can offer some sort of historical context is a point of pride for me, and I hope for this to translate to the world outside me. The usual trappings of youtube I would quickly eschew in favor of some service to a larger cause. So a deep, heartfelt Janky do Thanky for this suggestion, it totally captures the essence of what I'm attempting to accomplish with this program. And love live the Aerostar!

    I would agree, but I think the AI's image creation department still has some work to do deciphering the Aerostar from the Transit. Early AI tech had every prompt I gave it shooting out Transit looking front ends. I should actually re-visit this and see if its improved. Janky do thanky

    Engine looks just like my 87 3.0.. I always thought all 86 were the 2.8.. guess we all learned something!

    As I see more and more of the 86-88's come up for sale, I'm realizing just how rare the 2.3 and 2.8's must have been, because it seems like the 3.0 was being put into almost all of them. Never would have learned all this without the great Aerostar community! Glad you sold your wheels btw, finally got my 86 back in my driveway, have some more mechanical things to take care of before I get to aesthetics, but am trying to pin down exactly what direction I'm going to take with the wheels. The 3 spoke mustang wheels have me a bit smitten at the moment. Janky do Thanky as always
