The Build Room

The Build Room

Each week inside The Build Room we'll tackle various aspects of working on cars and other fun projects. Currently working on an 2020 A90 Toyota Supra and a 1976 RA23 Toyota Celica with much more to come.

Its not really a how to or training series, and I'm in no way certified so don't take it as gospel but I'll try to cover off on the issues I run into so you can learn from my many amusing mistakes tooling around in the garage.

We'll be tearing things down and building them back up including cutting, welding, painting, swapping engines, suspension, wheels and more. Sometimes it'll be a complete win and other times a massive fail - hope you'll join us on the ride.

If you want to know more go to thebuildroom.com and check it out. Thanks for stopping by!

    Lol, you can get new cassettes for them but they're almost as much as a second hand turbo and I couldn't be 100% sure it would fix the issue. It was completely locked up, it wasn't something that could be serviced without new parts.

    Hey great video. I don't really have the space, equipment or knoweldge on rebuilding a rack. But i bought one off ebay and while it does not leak it makes a bunch of noises and pops, and it makes that thumping noise when you turn the steeringwheel left/right very fast. I took it off my car and put the original one back on as they both seemed similarly worn The ebay seller let me keep the rack for free when i tried to return it. Since then though my rack has developed some play on the rod part and a clicking noise and starting to cause weird suspension problems. I was thinking of taking my ebay one to a rack rebuilding shop. I was wondering if the issues I mentioned would fix this rack since there is no leaking issues. Or will changing all these parts make it function like a new rack?

  • @TheBuildRoom
    @TheBuildRoom2 күн бұрын

    Are you sure the play and noises are coming from the rack and not the tie rod ends? If it's just worn out rod ends you can replace pretty easy with the rack in place. Otherwise you'd need someone to inspect your rack, it could be a bust bearing or something. Seals and bearings are fixable, damaged gears not so much.

    Another excellent episode, great work Cam. I think I saw this car a couple of years ago under a waterproof cover outside a house in Lathlain. I spoke to the lady that lived there and they were in the process of moving to Vic Park I think, and were selling it, asking about $5K IIRC. I could not take it then as I was out of storage room. I think it's a better base to work from than VC IMHO. Bent box sections under the front and rubbish bonnet hinges are standard for this car as you said. How do you plan to treat the light surface rust underneath? I hope Dave has recovered OK. The old saying goes is that you have not worked on your car unless you have cut yourself and bled everywhere! Prophetic words from him at the start, quoting his blood group, and 15/32 socket is handy when you round off the 12mm nut you were trying to get off!

  • @TheBuildRoom
    @TheBuildRoom13 күн бұрын

    Hi Mitch - good to hear from you. The more i look at both cars the more this one looks like the winner. Rust wise, this one is pretty stripped to start so I'll probably throw it on the rotisserie and just have the underside, engine bay, jambs etc sandblasted back, then paint strip the big panels before some 3k epoxy - will be the on right way to justify next steps. Dave has full recovered so no compo claims! To be fair he was working with my Metrinch stuff too which is both imperial and metric so was pretty safe from rounding off things thankfully (as such he just resorted to sheering them off) 🤣

    Hi. I'm on the edge of ordering a Vevor Ultrasonic 30 litre cleaner. I had anticipated using a degreaser in it for car and machine parts (I'm in food machinery engineering) so I was interested in you trying the different liquids. I was dubious about water on its own for greasy parts. I wondered if dishwasher powder might be better than dishwashing liquid? I realise it might be necessary to premix it, but I also wondered if it had more grease shifting power than a dishwashing liquid used by hand in a sink? It would be interesting to know if you ran another test on best cleaners to use.

    Hey - great you're thinking of jumping into a 1st gen. Major thing is rust - standard spots are drip rails, bottoms of front and rear windscreen, top and bottom of doors, bottom of front fenders, front of bonnet, bottom of rear quarters, a pillar where the door hinges bolt on, spare wheel well and both of the sills. Basically anywhere there's metal. Also look for any damage to the chassis rails from accidents and look for a relatively decent interior as parts are hard to find now and quite expensive. Engines are hard to kill so usually that's just a maintenance and tuning bit. As for Violet Crumbles there's big news in the next episode that will be out in a week or two so keep an eye out.
