Wow that looks fantastic.Awesome job. I agree it is so hard to find good professionals that care about quality work. I am retired so when I do have to hire someone I am there watching over their shoulders and asking questions.
End result looked great to me. As always you have done a thorough job to the best of your ability. Sure it’ll be solid for years to come.
Looks like a good job to me! Totally agree with trades people had a plasterer in recently and didn't expect to have to do so much patching after. Only use people you have worked with before and know the quality!
I did a very similar drain job on my drive about 7 years ago except I wasn't aware of those sump units so didn't put one in. I do try to avoid getting too much mud and debris down the drain and (touch wood) the system still continues to remove water as quickly as it appears from above but if I was to ever do a similar job I will definitely put one of those sumps in.
Concrete is such hard work, hats off. And that’s another excellent video as well. There’s a funny balance of good enough, honest, real, choice of content, likeable, trustworthy that prompts me to comment and you do it every time. Since the compressor shed carbuncle. May the force be with you.
It looks great; much better than the "professional" job. My friends had their primary bathroom remodeled and a glass shower enclosure put in. They have had the glass company out 4 or 5 times to fix it because it constantly leaks. They have finally given up; I don't know what they are going to do.
We had our home built. The tile and the plaster contractors were realy in a hurry. We were glad we had our home sooner than later, but from then on, I haven't called any contractor again. It's been 2 years. They mus have too many jobs and just don't care if it's properly done or not.
Keith I'm with you here... For those of us who enjoy trade work as a hobby, I find the extra time is worth knowing it's done right over hiring out whenever possible. Other than a neighbor of mine who did some landscaping for us, I've yet to be satisfied with any work I've hired out
You’re a good man Keith. That’s a smashing job. I’m ex-trade and your experience breaks my heart. As you say, there are some good fellas and lasses out there. I don’t know what the answer is as most people don’t have your skill and nous, but your vids show what good looks like. The world is a better place for Keith Brown 👍
Thanks!
I am loving the consistency with which you have been posting new videos recently. I just wish they were longer!
Great job Keith, don't be so hard on yourself.👍
You may not be a professional mate but that is bloody good work well done if you get a lot of dust from the drive look for some concrete sealer it will reduce the dust alot and once again we'll done fella great job 👍
Thanks 👍
'Giving a shit' is often the missing ingredient sadly. Well done sir, great finish and as you say, it's not perfect but at least you know it's done right. Fair play
Thanks
2” in car drive load whitout the steel bar? No chance to work more then few years. Ok U do not have winters and frost do not move the ground, but it can’t work long. I have 10 cm in my barn and is ful of cracks and level difernce and I use it only as a garage. One of reason is -20/-30*C in winter but not only.
It's concrete underneath, so it's a very stable foundation, and on the other side where there isn't concrete under, it's much thicker than 2"
11:55 can relate. Came to the same conclusion.
The concrete on the top will separate, it doesn’t make any difference.
Proper job, mate. I'd be very proud of that. Something extra satisfying about fixing drainage.
Awesome job.
The smooth border around the driveway definitely makes it look more professional, good call on that one!
Thanks
Great job Keith. Hats off to you for your back breaking efforts! It looks tons better than the "professional" version... 👍🏻
Wow, thanks!
Fair play not a bad job for someone who's not in the trade
Thanks!
You’ve done a brilliant job given it’s not your specialty. 👍
Thanks 👍
Lovely video, and good on you to plough through to the end.
Thank you! 😊
Should be six to eight inches with reinforcement, but as long as you’re happy.
It's concrete underneath 🤦♂️
As a trade person that puts care into every job it’s heartbreaking when people let you down or don’t do the job you pay them for and sorry about all that when you do work on your own home and you don’t have the skills to do the job but you give it a try and it don’t turn out the way you want it’s not always the end of the world what I am saying is you done the best you could and sometimes that’s a lot better then what some so called trades people do I seen the good the bad and the ugly
You're a rare breed it seems! 👌
Looks way better!
Cheers Dean
So true.. it's very rare to have a tradesman like Robin, who really cares about quality. It's in his DNA.. he can't do a lousy job. I put it down to competitive pressure.. "I really care.." is tough for the homeowner to credit, when the bids come in and one bid is quite a bit higher than the others. In theory... you pay extra for quality installation. But as the late, great baseball player Yogi Berra observed: "It theory, there's no difference between theory and practice... but in practice.. there is." So many times we pay extra in pursuit of quality, and are then quite disappointed by the result. As you say.. for things that matter... probably better to do it yourself, when you have the time to learn and the time (and money) to screw it up yourself... and then do it all over again, right!
Yep, if the sayings "pay peanuts get monkeys" or "you get what you pay for" were true, I'd have no problem spending more for quality work, but it doesn't seem to apply to the trades, sadly
Driveway does not look too bad from a distance on camera. Maybe in the future you may be able to skim it using self levelling concrete or something like that
Turned out great and no doubt looks better than if the tradesperson had ended up doing it. My favourite thing about DIY is that you always know what lies beneath the surface, both literally and metaphorically. If I cut corners I know where and why. If a tradesperson cuts corners (99% will), you usually find out the hard way when it's too late.
Very true
"Will always choose to diy in the future", yay more videos i was surprised when i you listed the number of tradesmen you've got in for jobs. given the broad range of videos you put out, i imagined you took all the takes on yourself at default. cant believe what are bad run of tradesmen you've ran into.
Thanks! Generally I don't touch plumbing or electrical. We have a great plumber so that's good!
Tradesman*
Love your stuff, so liked and subscribed👍🏽👍🏽🥳🥳
Thanks for subbing!
I've dropped you a DM on Instagram about a home project I am looking for some advise on, are you able to have a look?
I think a big problem is that 'tradesman' doesn't mean much. So many of them now swap trades and carry out work that they're not qualified or skilled in but say they are. I've just spent three days undoing and redoing a bathroom installation for my niece done by a heating engineer who had clearly tried to figure things out as he went. We have friends in France who say registered 'tradesmen' are only allowed to do work they are qualified to do and they all have a 10 year govt. backed guarantee. I know you don't name and shame but please make sure you comment on the builder's website to warn others.
He's no longer in business.... 👍
Looks way better.
Thanks
Good job. Also, your local highway agency (probably the council) have a duty to control water on roads - it is why dropped kerbs don’t drop all the way to the road surface. Carriageway water should be directed into carriageway drains, and not private property adjacent to the road.
Thanks! But I guess they can't control the whole waves that come splashing over the kerb?
That looks amazing - so much better than before. Don't put yourself down for things like trowelmarks! It's always the way though - we're always our own worst critics. I might have missed it in the video - why did you do the levels slightly different and use the metal bar to join them (on the right as you face the road)? Maybe someone could let me know as I'm curious!
Thanks! Sorry I'm not sure I understand the question, by levels do you mean the thickness of the concrete? We wanted it to be thicker but not enough cement was ordered sadly ...
@@RagnBoneBrownSorry Keith - badly worded. The main slope from the road goes down to the acco drains on the left, and to a metal bar on the right. Looks like there is a little step there where that metal bar is - like an inch drop. That's what looked a little odd to me.
i feel your pain on the gravel drive, we've got one that i'm having to sift to get rid of the 40 years of soil build up, i found a pickaxe works well to break it up.
Great video mr brown sir
As someone fairly local, I’d love to see some name a shame happen (althought I relaise it’s not your style). Looks fantastic!
He's no longer in business 👍
Brilliant, excellent job Keith. Well done.
Nothing wrong with that Keith.
I recently spent untold hours online researching contractors for a patio, walkway, landscaping project to finally get to work on some deferred maintenance projects which were put on hold while we were raising the family. We no longer have the physical ability to DIY large projects. Competent, responsible people are out there but it's definitely like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. I have no idea how we would have found the two excellent, local, family owned companies we hired without the internet on which they could showcase their own, legitimate work. The search is much, much longer than the duration of the job. Your project turned out great! You are very resourceful and have accumulated a lot of knowledge which is your most valuable asset when you attempt these projects. You are slowly turning your property into a valuable asset.
Thank you
Dude, you're really under selling yourself with this one - It's a great job! Nicely done indeed!
Thanks!
Working with concrete is a real skill and is not as easy as most be assume. You’ve done a great job and from what you’ve showed, it looks brilliant. Did you seal it with any acrylic sealant to stop mould, moss etc?
Cheers, yeah I've applied a sealer and hardener product by everbuild now that it's had over a month to cure 👍
Nothing is perfect and it doesn't have to be. Good enough is fine. You took on a big challenge with this one and showed tenacity and resilience to see it through. It's your driveway, you made it and if it needs maintaining in future, you will be able to do it. Great job! 👍
Thanks 👍
You did a great job. Great that you have a brother and your dad ! People like your channel because you are open and honest about your experiences. 😊
Thank you!
Brilliant work,...be proud. The attitude and bad work of some "tradesmen" is a real problem...especially to a non practical guy like me!!
electricity is scary. plumbing is too. otherwise, I'll have a go myself (with the internet's help)!
I agree!
