Great little project, and aluminium or brass are the best materials for bandsaw insert plates, in my view. I've been asked several times if I make the 3D-printed ones for the Axminster workshop that appeared in a video of mine. I don't because they're really not worth it. Making them yourself out of durable materials is really simple (as you've shown), and I think it gets you closely acquainted with your tools and how to fix and maintain them.

Thanks Karl. I'd have loved to have made some brass ones, but all the brass plate I have wasn't quite wide enough. Next time! 👍

Interesting. My preference is for plastic inserts which are sacrificial. I design inserts for 3D printing for my bandsaw and some local wood worker friends. The friends go through a number of the inserts, perhaps due to cutting curves or not having the guides setup correctly. I print several at a time for my friends.

Much more robust! But be mindful next time you'll tilt the table. Without a chamfer on the underside it might kink the blade!

Nice one Keith. Don't know why I didn't think to do this myself given the amount of aly plate I have about. I will now though😁

When I did this recently for my bandsaw the dust extraction with the new insert was awful. So I ended up drilling a number of holes in it and the extraction improved. The old and now broken insert had lots of holes in it and the extraction was fine so I may drill more holes in my new one.

I hope you changed over you angle grinder blade for the correct grade for cutting Aluminium, and if you didn't that you have disposed of the blade properly and do not re-use it for steel cutting.

I bet you would find a 3d printer super useful in your shop. I designed and printed out my insert plate in about 10 minutes and have many to spare. I also have holes in mine to let dust through to the extractor underneath.

Me too, the plate on my Charnwood lasted about 5 minutes as I was unfamiliar with bandsaws. A quick measure and the 3D printer solved the issue.

Nice job! Just had to do the same for my Charnwood bandsaw because the plastic insert that came with the new saw stood proud of the table. I wasn't brave enough to cut the slot in the aluminium with my bandsaw blade though. Would have saved myself a lot of time and effort if I had it seems.

Great work! When i make insert plates i like to dill and tap a hole though the top so i can raise up the height with a set screw. It seems like your washer did the trick a lot easier!

That is cool, but are you going to add additional dust collection holes around the blade like the old one had? If you do I would guess you would have better dust collection for any dust that falls down from uneven parts (ie ones which are not fully flat to the table).

Hope you don't mind me asking, on your bandsaw, do you find the cutting height enough, I am after a bandsaw for a small workshop I am building on a budget?

  • @Cooper_42

Yes, adding holes to the plate increases airflow, so the extractor isn’t starved for intake air. Without an extractor, they’re just a bother.
