Making a REMOVABLE EXTENSION for a dining table

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My mum asked if I could find a way to extend her dining table to accommodate our whole family of 8 that is removable. After a bit of thought and designing, here's what I came up with.

I like how resourceful you are and you don't let anything get in the way of finishing the project. Other channels would be headed to the store for a new CNC and some 8/4 walnut. You just carry on and make a nice table extension.

This is a crazy coincidence. I have two tables that are almost identical and was thinking of hacking one up to make wing extensions. Just couldn't work out how to make them fit to the main table. Thanks for the inspiration!!

My parents had a similar extension on a table for over 40 years, it didn't even used a clamp. It was plenty solid and big enough. They only stopped having it because they didn't bring the big table when they moved to a smaller place recently due to their age.

A neat and practical solution Keith, and not too intrusive on the existing structure of the table, I'm sure those holes are barely noticeable when not in use ! It all comes down to the strength of those dowels, but as you said I'm sure it's adequate as long as no-one puts their whole weight on it - it might depend how big your Mum's dinners are ! 😉

Nice work, cool idea. Love the use of the clamps. Just curious, some of your earlier videos are about refinishing/repair. Do you still do that? I’m also curious if you’ve ever considered making one of those epoxy tables. I’d just love to see how you’d tackle a project like that. Thank you for always providing amazing content! Like I’ve said before, your channel is my favorite. Also are you still doing podcasts with other wood workers? Your past ones are really entertaining. Would love to hear some more banter. Great job. And the design works. I'm sure mum and dad are very happy. I seem to get more Rubber wood verge pick ups these days than Pine. Sometimes I also get nice Hardwood. The re-purposed makes for my projects to be a lot cheaper as I only charge material costs and a small fee for my time ( it's my retired hobby, not a business). "my' downside to Rubber wood, is that the grain and colour are pretty ordinary, But what the customer wants....

This is brilliant! I would have never thought to go about it like this. If the holes ever are and issues, you could fix a couple dowels on the back of a thin piece of wood and put it on the rail.

Love the ingenuity, but I really don't like the way the end results look. Don't know how I would have done it different. Maybe a middle panel extension in the middle of the table with the other two that slide away on rails, but that's a lot more work.... overall you did it very efficiently and pragmatically.
