Welcome. We're currently renovating a 150 year old stone house with a crew of Portuguese builders.
We’re Meraid and Dan. In 2021 we bought a small abandoned farm 7500 m2 (1.8 acres) in the Coimbra district of Central Portugal with a schist stone house to rebuild and become our home.
We've been gardening and growing food for many many years. We absolutely love growing, eating and cooking what we produce. Plus, we preserve surplus harvests for year round enjoyment.
For the past 3 years we've been restoring this beautiful terraced land back to the bountiful homestead it once was.
You are welcome to follow our story as we create a beautiful edible garden and rebuild our first and future home together.
We hope you'll share some of your ideas and thoughts here too.
Thank you for joining us for what will surely be fun and exciting times ahead.

As you drove along the highway the bush clad hills look just like here in the Coromandel peninsula NZ. Do you have issues with pests or animals that dig up or eat your plants? We have to be aware of possums, pheasants, rabbits and occasionally wild piglets too🙄 Love your garden- pick a job, don’t try and do it all at once and divide, transplant, etc. awesome 🙌
Beautiful, beaetiful and beautiful!
Coucou Superbe vidéo A bientôt
Question...do ye find the garden hoe type implement is better than the shovel and pike? I cannot remember what the Portuguese name for it is. P.S...yer garden will be ready for your house when tihe build is done and ye move in. Imagine how stunning it will all look. Will be amazing. Be proud of all ye have done in bringing this place back to life. Its breathing again..ye have improved the soil as well. Congrats.
Jeez Mairead ( sorry incorrect spelling of ur name) those biting roses are devil's...😂. Love your Irish sense of humour. Both of you do so much work..its fab. An Irish viewer.
Hey Folks, can I ask what was the out come of your trip with regards to the poster/cartaz? Did you manage to get it framed?
Hard working gardeners enjoy
Watching you today reminded me of a riddle my son came home from school with, how do you eat an elephant ? One piece at a time. And he laughed and laughed .
Portugal is a country ready to destroy ancestors (passive euthanasia) only for money and illegal work to airbnb cumulate with reform and defiscalisated. its a légal fraud, approuved and subsudized by UE .
The nationality to buy, and the nationalitie to lose. Corrupt regulated professions. You can buy. When you became poor they will replace you. Where is the money from 50 years of colonization around the world? why did you ask to your People to leave Portugal when you colonized the Others for 50 years ? where is this revenue of colonization ?
a joy to be going backwards thru some past episodes a la your journeys...a la benjamin button kinda. looked some some pretty big seas.
Excellent video. Your garden keeps you busy.
Beautiful garden
Thank you, Mermaid for sharing with us your thoughts! Greetings to both of you from Bulgaria!
❤❤
You guys are utilizing every square foot of your 1.5 acre farmstead. And organizing in a way it gives you yield throughout the whole year. Not only that, you also keep it gorgeous! I've seen other channels who bought huge properties but not utilizing as much of their land. Except getting yield from the olives. You work hard and it shows. Within matter of an year, this farmstead will look like a castle in the midst of a botanical garden!!! Best of luck for all your future endeavors!!!
i have been searching for a new place to call home for several years now, and i miss not having a garden terribly. your video brings me joy and comfort; thank you. <3
@3:03 Strimmer String tea? Or are you soaking the string for a reason?
I can’t put my finger on it, but something about this video reminds me of Young Frankenstein 🙀🙀🙀
👏👏👏
Garden is looking great, there he goes again 😂
I know I said in the video about picking out the floor tiles I suggested going to the Stone Qurrey, I found the video that I was talking about, it was Make-Do-Grow, if you go to the community page you can see the video there, even if you don't want to go to the Qurrey or cannot afford it, I think that video is worth the watch!
Come on, guys, let's get the videoing basics right, at least. Get your face in shot, Meraid!! I'm fed up of your boobs talking to me (although I'm female!) 😂❤ You should get yourselves on a basic course. I'm sure your viewing figures would improve. Love you guys. Just an idea!
Would you consider getting a greenhouse in the future 🤔🐈💖🇬🇧
I adore Coimbra! The narrow streets and all the little shops are so cool. And the Roman ruins at Conimbriga are epic. I love your garden and admire how you are managing it. I'm trying to start mine but the bugs and snails keep eating my seedlings. It's so disheartening sometimes but so rewarding when you are able to eat what you've grown. Right now, I'm especially good at growing nettles (ha, ha) and brambles. Saludos desde Asturias. (Where it rains and rains.)
So glad to see you using a four prong fork. So many times as I am watching these off grid programs I have said you need a four prong fork!!
We have voles too, they have eaten allllll my potatoes. They don't like my beetroots, so we still have those. Maybe now the potatoes are gone they will learn to like them? 😂
It’s my onions that get ruined by the voles but they are becoming less of an issue. 😊
The place is looking great
Mother Nature has gone crazy , in Sunny Portugal, it is raining and here, in the Great White North it is sunny with temperatures reaching the 30* , here in British Columbia we are having a heat wave. Your garden looks Great as usual and soon the house will look Fabulous , lucky you !!!!!!❤❤🩹❤
I can't believe it is 1.5 acres! It looks so big and really beautiful!
The rain is like here in the north of the Netherlands, a lot. I visited Coimbra once in 1981; when Portugal was poor and there was no EU and the roads were small. But Coimbra was beautiful, with nice people. I have a fond memory of it. Have a nice weekend.
Éramos pobres? Eu acho que éramos mais ricos
You are planting your iris corms too deep...the corms want to get the sun baking them, then you'll get strong flowers, but you've effectively buried them. Love the garden.
I’m so envious of your land
May I ask what was the strimmer string soaking in and why? Pity about the weather and slow progress on the flowers and veg.....I can sympathise with you.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, good work garden looks wonderful 👍😊.
❤
You both looked so beautiful when visiting Coimbra☺️and what an amazing architecture there!🔥
Beautiful video, I have seen now nearly all videos, love it what you 2 do! 👏👏 I'm from Belgium, living 2,5 years in France now👍
I’ll bet that illicit strawberry was delicious 😂
Wonderful tour and your gardening always shows how successful your methods are.
As I live in a city, in a condo, I really appreciate your garden videos. Even second hand, gardening is so enjoyable and relaxing! Can't wait for the building to resume!
Hej! En fråga från Sverige🇸🇪 Varför lägger du tråden i vatten? Underbar trädgård👍 Ska bli spännande att se hur ert nya hus kommer att bli Med vänlig hälsning från Sverige
What do you use Comfrey for? And did you save that snail's life😂😂😂
Are the builders all gone awol
for the plants you're still undecided on where their final places are going to be, why not just put them in pots first?
Thank you for the garden tour! It’s beautiful!❤
What is the name of the music that you play during your videos
Your garden is beautiful. I cant1t remember (long time viewer) but was ita blank canvas when you first started? Hope the build is progressing well Best wishes from Susan in East Yorkshire.
