Barrels, Boxes and Discoveries on our Homestead in Portugal

We're on the last push to clear the house before the restoration begins on our stone ruin. We make some surprising discoveries along the way.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

    Glad you're both well and busy and not ill. It's such an exciting time at the start of renovations, fingers crossed everything goes smoothly. My loquat plant is still growing new leaves. I received a lovely pink orchid as a gift. London is freezing, so we're dreaming of Portugal. 🥰🌷🌿

    the thigh tile may be useful in moving water around the land. Kind of like a water run. could save a lot of steps if they get placed just right

    We also had (still have) a huge number of old, thigh-shaped tiles from when we renovated our place in the 1990s... They are too porous to shed water properly, but we have used them as a final layer on some outbuildings that we built, so that they would fit in better with with the older buildings. A proper roof underneath, then the old tiles on top. Very heavy, of course, and the roofing structure has to be very strong underneath to support it, but we like the look. Have also used them as edging in the garden, etc. At the very least you can take a sledge hammer to them and use it as and aggregate layer for a road... I absolutely love the huge lintel over the door!!

    Breaking the broken tiles into smaller pieces for walkways and using the larger ones as borders to prevent grass intrusion into the beds is a creative and practical way to repurpose them. It not only minimizes waste but also adds a unique and visually interesting touch to your outdoor spaces.

    Hello there, I hope you had a good Christmas and a Happy New Year to you both. With regards to the old roof tiles, I've seen them broken up and then put through a cement mixer to soften the edges, then use them for paths, graded steps etc. They look good. That was a great repurchase of the old oil and another cracking update. 👍🏼😊

    My suggestion for the tiles: cut down (with a 230mm disc cutter) into approx 125mm lengths... Use these mounted vertically into mortar or dry bed sand to form highly decorative path or patio surfaces that will be water dispersive and environmentally friendly! Roof tile: flower bed lines, road lines, too slippery to use as a pavement. You can create a jungle shower with a clay mortar abd use tiles over the clay.

    With the tiles, you could tie 3 together and grow parsnips and carrots in them... The broken ones you could lay them on a muddy path and break them to make a nice useable path. Just a thought 🤔

  • @tinytim161061
    @tinytim1610616 ай бұрын

    The tiles are getting more expensive - especially down south. I would make some boxes up out of pallets and fill with tiles stacked vertically - if you stack flat, they will break under their own weight. Although they may not be that waterproof on their own, you can get profiled roof sheets Either thin or sandwich) that they will sit on. So just store them out of the way somewhere - as the saying goes ' They wont eat anything' and either use at a later date or sell.

    One way to use those old staves is for a compost bin, or 7, 😋 . The tiles would make a decent cover for a potting shed. People around your area will likely want the tiles, especially if they're in decent condition. I saw someone use the tiles to make sides on their gardens, as well as to cover perennials.

    You'll need a proper modern roof on the old house, so you will end up with so many old (thigh-pressed) clay tiles. In truth that amount of brittle clay might be best returned to the land, as hardcore under a driveway, or to backfill a raised area. - But you could also pick out a few hundred of the better ones, and then use them to make a rustic roof over an outhouse/shed or garden folly, as a memorial project. Best wishes for the new year, and thank you for all the youtube videos!

    Fun episode today with all the treasures! Do you think the olive oil is any good? Or rancid? I wanted to tell you on your last video about how I grow carrots in containers. A half of a barrel works really well. I put compost and potting soil in the barrel or large pot. I do succession planting in other pots. Works great for me! Most of my gardening is in raised beds as it is too hard for me to bend down and garden. Thanks for sharing your life with us! See you next time! Happy Christmas!

    Hi Dan, I think it's great that you are preserving as much as you can for later use. I would keep as many of the old canal tiles from the roof if you can as they are very useful. It is likely that the builder is going to use Portland cement and cement based products for your restoration and not lime, that's just the way it is I suppose. Can you tell me what your old pickup truck is, I think it's an old Nissan but not sure. Hope it all works out for you both, God bless!
