During the Spanish civil war (1936-39), my father, then a child, was evacuated from the town where he lived and moved to a little saffron-producing village in La Mancha. He described evenings spent around the kitchen table covered in mounds of saffron flowers and all the families, including children, sitting around and plucking the pistils. Those were later roasted lightly in a cauldron. Yep, it takes a lot of manpower to produce a gram of saffron. But it is totally worth it

I love your attitude to those little “learning events” living in S Wales we are often looking at our garden and wondering why the vegetables are not coming up where we thought we planted them. I have just placed a fleece over our lemon tree and crossed fingers it survives another year.

South Wales in Britain ? I live in the States in Boston which get very cold in Winter, My old neighbors originally from Greece use to have 5 or 6 big pots and growing in them was Lemon and orange trees. They used to wheel them outside in the Spring with a hand dolly and put them in the house or garage somewhere in the Fall. Maybe you could try something like that. I guess they use a small grow light or such inside in the Winter. Just a thought. It used to look soo beautiful in the Summer with their Driveway lined with Fruit Trees. Spectacular.

That is all I grow is mistakes some live and some die when I am lucky I have beautiful mistakes and when unlucky I get the sad brown ones. lol But you are right about laughter it grows any mistake into an acceptable garden choice. I am glad you explained about the covered walkway as I have been waiting for the beautiful picture you planted in my mind when you were erecting it and I expected you would rent it out for wedding pictures haha not going to happen but the idea is beautiful.

My kiwi has full sun in the morning the rest of the day is in shade from a large tree. Plenty of fruit every year. For your arch you could try wisteria, clematis and climbing roses. Not much fruit but nice to look at.

I believe there lots and lots of plants and trees , in the markets, but you do not always know it origins, some will need time to adapt to the climate and soil, if they ever do. Southern Europe can be devastated by early frosts, they can devastate fruits, walnut trees for years on end. The mimosa arches are so romantic if they just had something growing on the them. Try planting some rosemary hedges, they are appropriate to the climate and extremely aromatic. The boars adore digging up the bulbs of wild saffron. They do well in Islamic countries where boars have been exterminated in densely populated areas. Remember you're no longer on the Emerald Isle.

So please that you have done this vidio, it makes me feel so much better and its true what you say I only put pic on of the success in my garden , you cant get it all perfect all at the same time . My grass and weeds take over my garden when I'm not looking so I dont always go in those places unless I get help . If you can get Epsom salts and bone meal there just put in the holes when planting . Xx

Gardening can be lots of fun as I see you have both been doing. And of course it’s so challenging as I see in this recording, but you have had a few setbacks. Each plant needs different kinds of soil and watering. The pomegranate I think needs to be prune back real good so it will grow. And the kiwis, I’m wondering if you have both male and female plants so that they can fruit. Homegrown food taste absolutely so great. Hope you have more success in the future with the challenging Variety of weather you have in your part of the country.

You made the most awesome mistakes 😍 I did the "don't water the potatoes", too, last year. THIS year I tried the growing them in the mulch methode. Except I mulched them only once. Of course the mulch composted, the potatoes then where "naked" - and too wet, because this year the climate decided to swap the summer for "rainy season" in Germany.... I also have amazing shrinking trees. They are also Kakis. They froze to the ground in their first winter. But they grew back, in June. I was about to rip them out, when I discovered the new shoots, phew! And I killed several Kiwis (the hardy version, because, Germany...), just because I didn't actually plant them. I blame Covid. I wanted to let somebody build a trellis, but then Covid happened. When I still had the money for it, nobody was allowed to work and when the lock down ended I was out of money for that kind of stuff (dog sitters make money, when people go on holidays and leave their dogs with a sitter...). So the kiwis died in their pots of not watering... poor things! AND I keep propagating Josta bushes while trying to actually killing the plants I have! I cut them down, because they grow like mad but make absolutely no berries and in the following spring I find the damned chopped and dropped cuttings rooted...

I think your beautiful archway might be perfect for grape vines. Maybe grow them a living trellis. I remember a picture of an "archway" of Golden Chain Trees underplanted with alliums? Golden flowers hanging down in spring and golden grapes in autumn... I just don't know if laburnums are okay in your climate. But there many alternatives, I imagine.

😂 That was fun! I have high hopes for your pink Jasmine in the Arch. Cyprus has a similar climate to Portugal and over there you see Jasmine growing everywhere, you can sew necklaces out of the buds, then in the evening they open smelling beautiful. I can picture it now! 🥰💗💗💗

You two are hilarious. Laughter is indeed the best "fertiliser". Regarding the kiwi vines that won't grow, I always think of where a plant originates when I think of the best conditions for it. Actinidia deliciosa originated in southern China in forested areas. So during the warm season, think moist humid conditions, soil rich in organic matter that might also be shaded. The problem could be the soil being too hot, dry and compacted during the summer.

@@NearbyVeggies also see if it is possible to keep the soil nice moist during the summer (cover with heavy mulch?), although I realise that may be a challenge when it's really hot and dry. Kiwi vines can grow rapidly when they get going, so there is still hope you can get them to cover the pergola / tunnel in a couple of years.

We have a passion fruit that gave us 10 kilos of fruit this year. Not sure we could eat any more. ☺️

What a good laugh, so restorative and encouraging. It is always good to know that others out there also make mistakes😂Coming home from a holiday, I discovered that the weeds had not only moved in but taken over! I arranged for a casual worker to help me for a morning. The word for remove or take out in the local Zulu language is pronounced 'keepa'. Having pointed out all the plants I wanted him to 'keepa', I went inside to get the breakfast things washed up and to do a few chores. When I returned, all the weeds were standing tall and all my precious plants were being removed. The poor man thought I was speaking English and telling him to KEEP them😢 Moral: don't ask a non-gardener to help and learn the local language which I have done😊

It’s difficult to be sure, but most likely it was the stress of the extreme drought in 2022 on newly planted trees. In the grand scheme of things our trees have done really well 😊

The soil is probably still poor in nutrients in many places in your vegetable garden. Exhausted if it doesn't grow. Nice video. I live in the Netherlands but am also thinking about moving to a warm country like Portugal to grow vegetables almost all year round. Maybe if you have a greenhouse you can also grow vegetables in the winter.😊

We have voles too, they have eaten allllll my potatoes. They don't like my beetroots, so we still have those. Maybe now the potatoes are gone they will learn to like them? 😂

Oh u 2. We all make mistakes gardening. I grow in pots. I have voles too. Try large pretty clay pots in front off your "ugly" wall. Mind u, they WILL have to be WATERED more often. Lol I also get 100° to 105° days here in july/aug here in nc, usa.

Viseu is not that faraway, though distance isn’t that critical here. For example if we were 15 minutes closer to the sea we’d rarely have a frost. Even 1 km can make a big difference if you are on one side of a hill or the other. The best suggestion I have is to look closely at what your neighbours are growing.

We get frost but they only last a few hours. A frost is usually followed by warm sunshine 🌞

Kiwi fruit won’t grow with the high temperatures of that you get in Portugal. Look at the temperatures in New Zealand because they are ideal.

@@samueldefaria6726 They do grow in the interior, Sonae have a big kiwi farm close to Soure. A quick look and production is also in places like Anadia. Maybe a bit of shade cloth could be useful until they get established. They do generally like a bit of shade in the late afternoon.

@@samueldefaria6726 you'll also find kiwi farms in Covilhã and that certainly qualifies as the 'interior'. I think the secret is protecting them both from the hot of summer and cold of winter. There's not much you can't successfully grown in Portugal if you know what you're doing. Just ask the Potato Queen!🤣

Those aren't gardening mistakes its merely nature letting you know who's "Boss".

i think Kiwi fruit take 3 years to fruit. Dont be disheartened and pull them out nd they sexed they kiwi when you purchased them? I think ita a ratio of 1 male to six females...I may be wrong. They are a wonderful fruit and well worth the trouble.

I would never let jasmine into my garden again. It is highly invasive and took me yrars to get rid of after it swamped and killed two gardenias and a pineapple guava tree
