For the carrots. Choose a big enough patch and replace with the existing soil with suitable soil for the carrots

Nice answers. Happy birthday Dan. The background story was lovely too. But the carrots...if you can´t grow them in the soil surely you can make some hugelkultur/raised bed thing which you can grow them in? If nobody around grows them they also make excellent barter material?

Planning any restoration is a headache, but when it's a stone building with quirks, definitely a lot more planning and adapting. Then there's what seems like miles of paperwork. People like me, living in North America, gripe about the requirements to renovate, but it's far less complicated. Stonemasons are unheard of here, but in Spain, Italy, Portugal they're well paid craftsmen and women. The last stage is the hardest, but it is the last one. Onward! 🎉🇨🇦

This is so similar to our own journey with the house. Spain does things a little differently than Portugal and a lot differently than the US. Not better or worse, just different. It is hard to be patient, but I remind myself that these houses were built to last and that's still how they operate, slowly but sustainably. We are adapting. I wish you great joy and success with this amazing project and I'm so grateful that you are sharing your journey with us. Obrigada. It makes the world a little less lonely. You two are really suited for this type of life. I swear we are so similar in our paths. I worked in an industry that took me all over the world and I would spend 3 months to a year in each place. I learned that I really loved the idea of knowing other people's customs and lives. I moved to a Caribbean Island for 7 years and then a huge hurricane blew my house away. Even that did not discourage me. I went back to California and worked until I had a 40 year pension. I then came to a small village in central Italy and purchase a modest medieval house and I have never been so happy. I miss being a nomad sometimes, but Italy keeps me on my toes. I am so happy to have met you two on You Tube. It is good to know kindred spirits int he world

I watch you because I love to grown my own veggies in East Anglia (UK), but also because of your sense of humour, your energy and flexibility. I totally agree that only learning the language you can immerse in the culture. Meraid you are so brave to stand up to recite poetry. Great episode. Don't hold your breath for Xmas 2024 unless the original plan was August 2024. Renovations always have hiccups and unforseen costs/delays (and if there aren't any, something is wrong/corners are being cut).

I've been following your progress for some considerable time, along with that of others who have done the same thing, building a new life in Portugal. You all have the same pioneer spirit but your channel is different because there's been no 'doityourselfery' that most other channels concentrate on. Nonetheless I've been hooked, but this particular video has been so special because it has given us a very personal peek into what makes you tick. I have very clay based soil as well so i grow carrots in containers with extra play sand added into the soil to loosen the soil

The involvement of all parties, owner, builder, architect and regulator is key. The relative hands off approach of the regulator in some countries does compromise the owner's position, as planning is not the regulators only function. Such a total involvement is so much better, in my view, and certainly keeps the building industry both in line and up to standard. I experienced something very similar in Singapore, where the builder doesn't get signed off until a year after one has taken delivery of the property. Imagine if we had that in the UK, along with a register of sub-standard contractors!!!

We are sat in our camper van “ seems like monsoon season lol “ , currently in Tomar waiting on promissory contracts 😁 on our 1 acre little ranch we have found after 2 years searching. We found your channel & immediately became addicted … We binge watched right up to date over the weekend 😉. We’ve rebuilt houses in uk .. India .. Canada & now Portugal. Sooo excited to watch your rebuild start as I’m a stone mason . We still wondering how you guys got from £5k savings in the uk to buying a property & undertaking major renovations in Portugal, but hey always a mystery sometimes with tubers . We totally love your approach on the project & the no drama clickbait headlines .. we’ve so much to learn when it comes to gardening 🧑‍🌾.. but we have learned so much from your channel already ..
