Plans Changed - Stone House Renovation
Saving a big stone wall from demolition. This week, we find a solution to protect the centre wall of our future home. Dan's away and decisions have to be made. Building continues and I get a surprise Valentine gift when Dan comes home. We pick some Yacons and invite you to the dining table once more.
Thank you for your magnificent support on this project. And again, we absolutely love reading your comments and will continue to answer your questions as we carry on with the renovation of this beautiful property.

I guess we all knew the stone house was going to be a challenge but I'm sure the builders will make the right choices and you'll have a beautiful home when it's completed. You two have been so patient through the process.

I'm actually surprised you didn't knock it all down. Build a modern home with proper insulation and then face some key accent walls with stone.
@NearbyVeggies
4 ай бұрын
That was never our intention. It could be cheaper to knock it down but the much longer wait for a full new build project was projected to be about 3-5 years. We only waited about 18 months for full approval. Though I believe planning rules changed this week.
Wow, sorry about your wall dilemma. Big decisions with big structural & financial implications 🤞🏼. And the builders having to modify their equipment to suit the project....epic. Bon courage folks ❤

The thought of starting my renovation seems easy compared to all the work you are doing. I am happy the engineers, architects are finding ways to help you put those walls right. Your final decision was probably the only one that will fit in with the age and build of the house, but it is a mind twister trying to imagine how it works. I agree, that makes sense, concrete has its own drawbacks, so less is better. Your gardens should be much better this year, the long term planning may show up with some beautiful results. 🇨🇦

Rebuilding an old house it´s more costly than to build a new one.I´v worked in construction here and in NJ- USA... that´s why you find so many old abandoned houses/ruins in Portugal portuguese people are affraid of the costs of rebuild them ...that said a old house properly rebuilt could be a very beautifull home full of character...but it takes time and money and patience ....

If you get single petal (open centre) dahlias they will be much better for the pollinators than the showy ones - though the latter are great as cut flowers. Collar eyes are beautiful but still have an open centre that allows pollinators access to the nectar.
@NearbyVeggies

We have lots of single petal flowers for that reason. Calendula, cosmos, etc
OMG!
The salt on that part its probably the SALGADEIRA box where the Pork Meat was trow the years in a box with salt....iyts not all the wall I am sure.
13:00: Measure twice, dig once. 26:33: Some reminiscence of yachting in the background. 🙂 Lets call tat way of pouring concrete "Old school" but they seem to be working tirelessly so a good bunch of people. One has to dismantle before re-building, soon it is going to turn around!

I bought a pack of single colour bulbs and when I read the small print it said that the colour on the packet was not necessarily the colour of the flowers that would grow. Since then, I check the packet carefully (if it matters)
what I would do separate you can make 10 plantes out of that 10 not 1

that Cardo its for the cheese I remember my Dramother used that in the old Days.
Just wondering, you said that salts were what was causing the stone wall to flake, usually caused by damp. What is used to stop the progress of the salts in Portugal? I feel that chemicals might not be your usual go to, What are you going to be using as a neutraliser? Brush ,wash, vinegar, wash then baking soda I have heard used, but that was not on a wall with such a build up as those at your place.The Ledge option will get the build above the issue and I wonered if the salts issue would be addressed first.

I've been following you for a short while and I've seen how much enthusiasm and effort you do to make this place livable and enchanting, but I have a question to ask you. Isn't it costumary in Portugal to consult an engineer or architect before making a purchase? I've noticed that many people experience infrastructure problems after purchasing and I'm sorry that you then have to double your available budget. In Italy we usually rely on them and if the deal is convenient, we make the purchase. Consider that if you buy in a mountain area, you must even consult a geologist, this is for the safety of the buyer
