    This board might be a touch small for me on the first attempt but I could get used to it if I had to… believe it or not it’s actually easier in the lighter conditions! You don’t need speed to get a big foil up mostly just movement and this board allows plenty of that, and once the foil activates, if you can un weight the board it comes right up. I’d have no chance on this thing in bigger bumps with a smaller foil. I got skunked just like that on the next size up the other day… paddled for 8km 🤙😵‍💫🤙

    Having watched a few of your 1401/35 skinny sessions, I decided to invest in a 35 skinny (already have the 40 and 45). I was completely surprised at the difference between the 40/45 and the 35. Everything seemed to be faster, (upwind speed, turns), my ripple glides seemed to be smoother and longer and my pumping felt better. We have 30 knot conditions tomorrow, so it should be glide heaven.

    Hi, it’s great to see you exploring the 1401’s full speed range. As an ex hang glider test pilot I spent a lot of time exploring a wings low speed flying characteristics. 1401 stall breaks at 13km/hr(splash down. 14/15km will be the wings mush mode/beginning to lose lift and poor directional control. Then you have “min sink” or call it max lift which should help you climb mast as well as staying on slow bumps. Speeding up somewhat you will then find the max glide speed. Harder to quantify with only75cm of airspace to play with but I bet you have this subconsciously dialled in. Then V max where the drag prevents you going any faster. Have you considered fitting a velocitek speed puck to your board for real time water speeds. I am just starting my foil/downwinding journey. I ride with you every morning after you post streams-Mike

  • @jsibleytube

    Great comment! I wish I could find further education on this topic, detailing the varying lift/drag characteristics of foils and physics through their range of speed and roll/bank. Even just these general concepts (stall break, min sink, v max, etc.) are new to me. We are missing that info. Do you publicly post your findings/experiences?

  • @downwind_drifter1040
    @downwind_drifter10404 күн бұрын

    Those speeds sound about right from my experience. The foil is tested extensively with software. I could get a bit more accurate with my own speed capturing but I don’t have the time to work with it… I’ll leave that to others. There are som many parameters when using the foil in real world conditions, with bumps and water type/qualities… Im not sure how much a deep dive” will help. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts though and perhaps how you think you experience can translate into water based results. I imagine there is a lot of crossover and wonder where the greatest differences will be besides fish! Perhaps the refractions we face with the swell energies bouncing around all over the place? I wonder how these compare to air turbulence and such. I used to sky dive a lot, I remember being very scared the first time I stalled a parachute for the sake of learning… terrifying stuff! I can imagine it would be even more so with a hang glider. Thanks for the great message 🤙🤙

    Currently I’ve been struggling to paddle up the 1180 as easily as the 1201, in bumps. I can still get it up fine but it seems to require more strength. I can feel the resistance of the 1180 in the water when I get up to foiling speeds. It’s something that I feel I’m having to overcome… In that same moment with the 1201 I wouldn’t be feeling drag and could glide away. ^ this could be due to my current skills, and familiarity with the high aspect foils at the moment. As I’m thinking about it now the 1180 might need more pump than paddle when getting close to takeoff. Hope this helps 🤙🤙

I use the smallest stabiliser I can get away with until it becomes an issue. I’m currently trying to find out how small that could be. There’s not much else to it than that for me, just remove unneeded material from the system for less drag. I do feel like the 40 is my safe zone… I don’t need any bigger and the 40 is good enough for all else. I like it. It’s good dimensions for me and I’m managing to make the displacement hull work. There is a trade off with a rounded hull… it rolls more in the water verses a flat bottom board. The benefit is that it cuts through the water well, which seems to accelerate quick of the mark. The board also travels up and down smoothly in the water column giving you a bit more travel to activate the foil. The down side is roll stability, at times it feels unstable… you have to be more precise with inputs. It doesn’t seem to dampen bad technique like a flat bottom board. 🤙🤙

    It depends on the conditions and what I’m up to. Here I wanted to ace the run and I’m using quite a high span foil and a relatively short mast at 80cm… if my board is 30cm off the water that’s only 50cm of wiggle room until full breach in flat water far less in bumps, especially in small bumps where the foils wing tips want to poke out. I also use a 75cm mast and a 68cm… that doesn’t leave much room to play especially with the 1401 art pro. You basically have to follow the surface of the water with your board… If I flat water pump I am at full hight on the mast and often breaking the surface of the water looking for efficiency. Or if I’m having fun and don’t have a time limit I’ll play with riding high extending the 3d game zone Thanks for the question 🤙🤙

This records the signals required Then when you are in the editor after you download footage from camera to your phone, go to the pencil icon and then scroll across until you see stickers. Open stickers and you will have a bunch of options to add to the screen from the gps! Speed, tracking, g force, altitude… so many. Speed is what you’re after. It’s not looking likely that I’ll make it over but if I do I’ll get in touch for a cold one! 🤙🤙

    I can imagine this is probably extra stupid but I wonder if you could have some of a wing suit set up or a little sail mounted on the backpack for extra propulsion. It'd be great if it could auto pivot to the wind as you needed.

    There was something like this that I saw recently called the carrot with kai lenny… it’s not as sophisticated as your idea though! I’m actually not a fan” of the wind, I like surfing the swells without a push on my back at all! It is often a welcome assistance though especially when trying to get going. It’s awesome when I travel the same speed as the wind is blowing as in that moment it all feels very still! It’s beautiful and surreal! Until I turn and change direction and feel the wind is there again. 🤙🤙

    Great vids, appreciate all the work you put into making them. I’m 65kg and pretty much always shim rear foil flatter 0.5 to 1 degree with both Spitfire and ArtPro. Be interested to hear your thoughts and experience shimming. Thanks

    Thanks for the question 🤙 I havnt shimmed much with Axis. A little shimming earlier on to try help with dialling in pumping when I was newer to it. I was adding more lift to the system but didn’t like the feeling, it felt porpoisey… I find the gear works well for me as it comes and always wonder if I make changes am I actually just making the system worse. I used to shim my Armstrong gear a lot in both directions as I could never get it to feel right. I’ve thought about it again since your question. Theoretically I wouldn’t imagine an extra half degree or not would make much difference for me as it’s such a tiny change when you compare to to the radical movements we make with the foil during our riding… but I know that that is not actually the case neither as I’ve felt the extra lift of adding a shim and likely even more so on the shorter fuses… unless it was placebo subjective experience which is also a big thing for our activity… You see a shim go in you will likely feel it If you don’t know if a shim is added or not it would be a tough call to make accurately I imagine. And I think that says something. The inputs to our equipment play such a huge role that if you think something your likely to input differently anyway and then islets all a wash. But I believe I can feel drag from just changing 5mm of rear foil chord… and I’d be reasonably confident to a-b test that in the water with two exact setups that I can quickly go back and forward on. I’m very much after glide and reducing drag in my system, you have me wanting to try a reverse shim now in the rear to try remove any un needed drag. I’m currently in the process of cutting down my 35skinny. I’ve already cut it down a fair bit and about to cut it down further. I want to find where I get diminished returns. That’s about all I know for shimming… for now 🤙🤙

    another amazing informative film , I have been using your logic and ideas to try improve my riding ,as i have said before im in the gong system and currently do upwind downwind with a wing (saving for a dw board)for now trying to achieve more glide , I use a curve xxl this is somewhat like a spitfire A.R 8.5 for 115 wingspan and 16000cm2 im thinking of getting a smaller stab that shortens the system so current stab is 44cm wide and A.R 8.5 230cm2 volume 0.06l and im thinking of getting a 37cm wide and A.R 7.6 180cm2 volume 0.05 the smaller stab would make the set up of the fuse 5cm shorter im 95kg is this a good thought process to longer less drag or will it be to unstable for my weight with wing . Thanks if you get time to give a opinion take care and have a awesome week chris tomo

    I’ve though about this a few times now. It’s hard to say as you’re heavier than me, here’s what I just wrote to someone else that aligns “I’m not a heavier rider though, so I can only answer from my experience. I’m finding I get great leverage over the system having the shorter fuse (sillyshort) What becomes an issue is, if I do heavy pumps, they kind of feel wasted… kind of like an inefficient swimmer dragging through water with their hands rather than capturing it. The shorter fuse doesn’t seem to like strong inputs. A long fuse can seem to handle heavy inputs. That’s what gives me some concern about recommending it to a heavier rider… I’d say go for it if you can reduce the strength you use pushing inputs through your system. If money isn’t a concern for buying and trying gear I’d say for sure go for it! it’s worth experimenting for you and could be excellent for you.” That’s in regards to fuses which sounds like what will happen to your setup. I’m of the opinion currently that if someone’s stance is correct to how I ride balanced over the front foil then the rear shouldn’t really come in to play and therefore can be reduced. I’m cutting cutting down the smallest axis stab and so far it feels good. I cut 40mm of an already small but high aspect foil. I’ll keep cutting, but I’m riding it in between to try understand it. Perhaps you could cut down your current stab instead of spending money on a new one? My friend cut his down and used the removed tips as the template to shape the new sized stabs tips. It might be a fun project and you could go a bit at a time… perhaps make some videos about it Hope this helps 🤙🤙

    Great content. Wondering if you could make a video of gear selection for 100 kg people. How does rear foil and fuse selection change for 100kg foilers? Novice vs experienced?

    I’ll get Sam loader on, hes 95kg. I personally don’t think it will be very different for 100kg riders as far as fuse and stab go… not if using a good stance. I now position myself to standing over the front foil and try use that alone to balance me. It has allowed me to use tiny stabs and fuses as they arnt being used to support me. I spent a dedicated amount of time improving my stance. It’s worth playing with. Thanks for reaching out🤙🤙

    Firstly, thanks for all the vids they are the best real world experience I have found. When you talk about the “stalling technique”, have you explained this more on a different video? Are you basically trying to slow down to almost stall to match the bumps or are you using the pre stall to gain height and load up some stored energy for the glide down? This is all new to me, I am still at the downwind winging stage, mostly on the 1180. Thanks again, I am guessing you are helping many to read bumps and navigate the thousand nuances to staying on foil. Cheers

    Here’s a vid kzread.info/dash/bejne/jI6Aj7SaaMa-qLw.htmlsi=hUsVX9o2J_JV3DMK The vid before and after this are also talking about stalling. It’s more riding using “brakes” than actually playing around with stalling. I found myself always hooning around where as now I’m trying to modify my speed to fit the bumps… not needing to find bumps to keep my frantic speeds going. Thanks for the great message 🤙🤙

    Another great video! Learning so much from you sharing your experience. Moving to the shorter fuses, did you have to change your mast position or have to adjust your stance? Im mainly on the 1401, HM 750 mast with short fuse adv ++ and 50 skinny and after watching this, want to try a smaller fuse.

    No changes that I am aware of. Go for the silly and then consider sizing down your rear foil too! Perhaps the 40 or if you’re feeling brave the 35… but likely best to step down through them… the 40. 🤙🤙

    So I’m on the black advanced short, 1180 w 55 skinny and still just trying to get on foil. I’m 95k. Would going all the way to the silly short from short? Is that too big a jump for a beginner? Sounds like I also went too big w the 55. Love your vids! Keep them coming!

  • @downwind_drifter1040
    @downwind_drifter104020 күн бұрын

    @@marcrlutz hard to say… it would be good to find out for both of us if the silly short is a good choice. The 1180 is a small foil to be starting out with, i for example started on the png 1300 at 76kg. So I’m not sure what you should expect with the 1180. It’s got a lot of feel though and can likely handle some less than technical inputs and still function. I think if you have bay bumps and stick with the 1180 you’ll have success. The silly short will liven it up when it comes to paddling it up, it might buck at you and try to stall if you push it too much in pumping up… But it would also force you through a big range of motion some of it being correct and might give you some good surprises to.. where as the short fuse you’ll have to gain mast height along a longer drawn out section of travel. Honestly it seems 50/50 to me, that’s pretty good odds for buying performance. The bigger skinny will be good for you currently, it doesn’t need to be upgraded until you out grow it. What board are you on?

    I’m on the big Cuda 130L and the KT 135L. I’m just trying figure out a way to optimize the 1180 for a big beginner. Sounded like from vid the shorter fuse would help pop me into foil esp w the 55 skinny

    I am really curious now about the 1180 combined with silly short and the 35 skinny. I reckon this combo would not be “dead”. Maybe you could try this one day. But you encouraged me to step down to my crazy from the ultrashort. Its funny that I needed this video to get back to my favourite winging fuse - the crazyshort.
