Axis 35 skinny cut down to 320mm 1401 Artpro

I did it, I cut down my skinny! I trimmed 40mm of span and I’m using it in the lightest wind… let’s see how it goes.
This was run 1 of 4 this day with an increasing wind. It started light as you can see in this vid, i though this would be the extent of it, but it did pick up, which was a blessing.
I put together my best light wind setup I have. I talk a bit about my choice of board in the vid, basically it’s my lightest and shortest board. Because im usung a big foil I don’t seem to need board assistance anymore, this is good news! That means I’m free to try downsize things even further than the 7’6 for light wind and bay run sessions. How small will I be able to go and still keep ease of use and security? I don’t want to push into too small a board as I want things to be easier and better… not just a “I can use small gear” boast.
I see that a lot in winging… people using small gear as a status symbol… what a waste.
Anyway my gear worked out well. The cut skinny! I’m not sure what to think just yet, it feels slick though and has noticeably less drag. The sweet spot of usable feel” not sure how to describe this… seems reduced. Perhaps it’s like a seesaw with a narrow mechanism and short poll? There is less lag in the pitch control.
There might be a reduced thrust from the pumps too, I will likely learn more about this as I continue to size down… I’m still not sure how pumping works… perhaps reducing and removing the rear foil will teach me something.
Dylan Bez showed up at the end of this run and we did the next 3 together. Stay tuned.
Be good, be safe, be kind 🤙🤙

"I see that a lot in winging… people using small gear as a status symbol… what a waste." ----- that made me laugh. I only wing at the moment and I only use a DW board now. Sold all my shorties.

You’ve definitely got that foil dialled in ,great run 🤙what sport did you come from & how did you get into D/W foiling .?🙌

Feels pretty dialled but can always be better. Recreational surfer, mainly mid lengths and sups. I actually purchased a few kites to learn how to kite surf, but only a couple sessions in Covid began and my gear got left in Fiji… New Zealander had some long lockdowns, also with the ocean being banned… go figure. I purchased a second hand wing during Covid and used my skateboard around the streets. I did a lot of wing foiling when we were allowed back in the water, I was hooked! But only to learn how to surf the ocean… eventually the wing would get me upwind and I’d turn downwind and try surf. Eventually I saw guys with paddles on the internet and then one local crusher - Jordan Harken - in person. The adventure started from there, I purchased some gear 🤙🤙

Love the videos!! Ive watched a few and love your commentary and format! Thanks for all the work you do on this! I do see you switching skinny stabilizers on different runs/foils. I bought a skinny 40 and i dont think ill go back to progressive or speed tails again. Curious how you are selecting which stabilizer you are using? I'm still working through all your videos so apologies if you already talked about that. Cheers!

At the moment my thinking is, the smaller the better. I’m testing these smaller sizes for myself, the cut down 35 - now cut to 280mm - and 2 cut down 45s one was mine one I’m trying from a friend. I use the smallest stabiliser I can get away with until it becomes an issue. I’m currently trying to find out how small that could be. There’s not much else to it than that for me, just remove unneeded material from the system for less drag. I do feel like the 40 is my safe zone… I don’t need any bigger and the 40 is good enough for all else. It does feel draggy after the 35 and some of the other smaller ones I have but I know the 40 will work. 🤙🤙

@@downwind_drifter1040 that's amazing. I had fun listening to your latest video on fuselage and stabilizers! You guys are really pushing the limits. Thanks so much for sharing all your thoughts. It also made me laugh how I thought my 400flat stab was amazing till I put on a skinny. Now it feels like a "bag" on my setup 😂 . I mostly wing, but am loving downwind winging. So I'm going to pick up a shorter fuse as you all recommended . Excited to try for your discussion. I switched from a std ultra short to advanced ultra short. I didn't like it at first but now that I'm used to it I'm interested to try a shorter one and see if it helps my pumping. Fun stuff! Thanks again!!

@@Twizz1979 the shorter fuse will be difficult to wing at speed. I don’t like winging the sillyshortA+ for pleasure, but it’s a good tool for gliding dw.
