Nz national championships Axis 1401 35 skinny sillyshort

Спорт

Sunday 5th May
I knew the nationals were on and that off likely see them… didn’t realise I was going to go through it!
Bunch of gc’s on the water supporting nz foiling.
Usual run for me in the NE army to stanmore. Normally I’m out there alone, so this was cool and different. Perhaps it might have been the first time some of the wingers saw a downwinder too.
Easy run on my new favourite lite wing setup, Axis 7’6 1401 35skinny and sillyshort fuse on the hm 75cm. This gear feels like I’m cheating, the sillyshort… my god it’s good. For getting off the water it makes a huge difference.
I havnt watched the vid yet, as I’m trying to get it up asap… hope it’s good
Be good, have fun! 🤙🤙

Enjoyable content! Whats your opinion on the 1180 vs the 1401, i notice you seem to choose the art pros over the spitfires, whats your reasoning? Cheers

If you go back through my vids I used to use the 1180 a lot for dw. The more experience I gain, the more I become in tune with my gear. What I’ve found is the spitfires are more for surfing, that includes dw surfing. The sacrifice is the efficiency, the spitfires have drag compared to the comparable artpros for the same conditions. If there is not excess energy in the wind and water to tackle the extra drag of the spitfires then they won’t be picked by me. I’m often out in very small conditions, likely conditions most others wouldn’t consider… 2ft bumps trough to peak. When it’s like this with limited energy you really start to notice what works and what doesn’t. So now I pick accordingly… if there is energy to burn then I can pick whatever foil I feel like. Perhaps that is a spitfire so that I can perform a more surfy style. If I have somewhere to be and need my gear to work then I’ll take an artpro. I don’t think there is any other advantage of a spitfire over an art pro besides a more forgiving tight turn. Hope this is what your after 🤙🤙

Another great video! You were speaking of not always going after the front of the line but working the back of the line. How do stay on foil if the bumps are rolling past you? I would think you'd need to stay ahead on the bumps to keep from coming off foil?

Think of it like a wave. Most experienced surfers will ride the wave down the line, they don’t got straight with the wave. If an experienced surfer does go straight it’s often followed by a return to the power… top to bottom surfing. Dw is not much different when you zoom in… as you zoom out it looks more complex but the same things are happening. As I ride across the valleys between the bumps, I’m basically riding a bump/valley/pathway down the line, so there is some power there. Not a whole heap of it though if conditions are small. If they are big there is a sustainable amount of power there alone. So in the vid I’ll ride across the valleys heading anywhich way following contours, using what energy is offered, as well as using my systems glide and efficiency. As my momentum starts to drop I’ll recognise it and start adding my own power to the system until I reach something that offers me ocean power. The more experience I get the more I understand when I need to add my power or when I can rely on the ocean. Directionally it doesn’t matter too much, and often you are likely to be better off having energy coming from the side or in front vs passing under you. If a swell passes under you and you are facing in the same direction of the swells travel, you end up with an uphill in front of you until the new trough reaches you and you begin again on the next swell behind. If conditions are big this can take a long time and you just won’t be able to maintain riding… you are much better off to turn down the line as I do and have the swell come from your side. Does that make sense? 🤙🤙
