I found the 7’6 Axis Downwinder board a surprisingly warm welcome home…I actually found it easier than the 8ft Axis, in these bay run style conditions. The big Foil does play a large roll here.
I think these wide boards can still suit beginners, because often a beginner will be on a larger Foil anyway and so I don’t think the width of the board will be a hindrance. That’s good news I’m sure for people starting the journey because the wider board offers a lot more support.
I know the trend is to go narrow but if you can get away with width why not? The problem with that will be that it won’t translate to Ocean style bumps for somebody that’s not a strong paddler yet… that’s when the width and the lack of length will slow somebody down.
But the good news is once up on Foil the Board disappears I think there’s a lot to having a shorter board and reduced swing weight. I think it is quite noticeable even just 4 inches between this and the 7’10 north horizon.
So yeah I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to taking it out again, it might become my go to bay run board again! The reason I switched to the 8ft was to make it easier to get on Foil but I don’t think I’m gonna find it hard with the 7’6 regardless.

Hopefully you find the new betas here also handy, the 1401 and sillyshort fuse with 35 rear is a killer combo, and has allowed me to incorporate using the brakes that I never knew I had.
