A lot of people don’t realize how fragile Spencer Tracy’s health was at this time; he could only be on set a couple of hours a day and Katharine Hepburn basically held his hand and guided him through the filming. Given the deeply personal nature of his final monologue I can understand why Hepburn has never watched the movie.

The making fun of her accent wasnt rehearsed according to Jodie Foster. Anthony Hopkins came up with it on the spot and it was very effective.

Spencer Tracy gave an incredible performance, especially in this particular scene. I love this movie, seen it several times. He and Katharine Hepburn were of the golden age era. They don't make them like that any more. That's why I prefer these movies over many of current day! NOW THOSE WERE ACTORS! I'm grateful these films are still available to appreciate.

In an interview, Mr Nicholson says the writer of the screenplay (a close friend of Nicholson's) didn't want this scene, considering it too pat and predictable, and that Mr Nicholson agreed. Not the scene itself but the purpose of the scene. Watched the film for the first time only the other day, and consider it stupendous, even this scene. So much better than when he's 'being Jack Nicholson'. And such a pleasure to see a film that doesn't have a sad/happy ending. It just ends.

I think this is such a poignant and unforgettable scene. The fact that it was their last movie together and that he had been so ill during the filming process makes it a bittersweet film. As an author, I love language and think of this scene at least once a month. It’s so beautiful that Kate’s niece played Joey. It lets the world imagine what their family may have looked like had timing been different. Finally, we all get to hear Spencer tell Kate how much he loves her.

Interesting how Liam Neeson who is obviously Irish Catholic played a Protestant and James Nesbitt who is Protestant played a Catholic. If you saw the film the true culprit is the mother.

This scene directly addresses the genius symbolism of the Diner scene. Bobby drifts around so much and struggles to be serious, emotional or atatched to anything or anyone despite his talent and good heart, because he can't deal with the struggle's of life, especially because he understands how much better things could be, and he can't take things as they are, for example when he plays the piano he logically talks himself out of the emotion he might feel playing, because he find it silly. "I know that's what it comes with but that's not what I want". Even sadder is that Bobby gives the waitress a perfectly reasonable solution to the problem with him ordering toast (the issues of life), but it still doesn't work. That's life I guess
