Douglas is one of the best actors alive. Especially his work in this movie places him at the top.

I went from not really knowing who Kirk Douglas was and than after watching Spartacus and Paths of Glory within a weak I became a big fan of his.

Kirk Douglass was without a doubt, one of the finest actors in cinematic history. My Mount Rushmore for actors would be Kirk Douglass, Bert Lancaster, Jack Nicholson and Richard Widmark.

Powerful film, One of Kubrick and Douglas's all time greats, Richard Anderson (who later went on to play The Six Million Dollar Man's boss Oscar Madison a couple of decades later on TV) is also superb as the prosecutor. (although you don't see him here)

Watching this scene makes me wonder, how -- how in the world is Kirk Douglas still alive?

@actonbath which actor do you mean? ralph meeker was in the navy, timothy carey wasn't in the air force either and joseph turkel definitely isn't buried in arlington (i hope not anyway- he's not dead)

@skuterixas91 I assume you like the film? Actually I think it was quite well made, and I'm a big Kirk Douglas fan.... when I said "horrible movie" I just meant thematically it was very dark and depressing. I suppose that could be misinterpreted

@actonbath ah- i've just seen your other comment where you named him- wayne morris. i was confused at first, as although his character is a coward, he isn't court martialled for it. (he's the one kirk douglas orders to officiate at the execution, right?) i didn't know that stuff about him, that's interesting. and he's very good in this film.

Quite an ego on you, buddy. Also, I never said it was an anti-war film, only that it was more effective than any other anti-war film I've ever seen. Whether it was intended to be or not, its surprisingly effective as an anti-war film.

Fine. It's not an anti-war film. Still works well as one.
